..................at the Ricoh Stadium show. Steve Lamacq at Ricoh was brilliant and the higher demo tables were a really good idea.

Indeed, it was the first time that I had encountered them and they were brilliant. I was doing a scenic demo and could accomodate six or seven people at once rather than the 'traditional' low table with just two chairs which on many occasions would have two people 'glued' to the chairs blocking everyone's access to the demo. Me and David Brandreth (Missenden) have made some wooden risers for the table legs for any demos that we do to give close access to what we're doing..

Most 'specialist' shows seem to dogedly stick to low tables!

  2. What CK posted chimes very much with me. At shows, anything in any scale that's well modelled and is presented with that 'realistic' look to it irrespective of its nationality always appeals.

Continuous movement on large layouts also is always good to see.  We'll be striving for that on our 'Balcombe' layout!

This one I'd love to see but never will as it's firmly rooted in Italy!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWFvxjY3-rE Good to see the running with 'pans up'!...not often seen.

Some photos from Switzerland in the north east of the country, Appenzelleralnd.  The place is Gais where the metre gague Appenzeller Bahn runs through it from Appenzell to St Gallen.  It is the junction for the branch to Altstätten.

The photos are from 1990 and 1991.  Mostof the curves look remarkably like set track Radius 1.

Ah...Apenzellerland and its powerful cheese! On my last trip to Switzerland I visited Altstätten and bought some ripe Appenzeller cheese and wrapped it up in foil and plastic bags and put it in suitcase for the next leg of the journey. The pong even permeated the wrappings and stunk the compartment out but I did thoroughly enjoy eating it though! The fellow travellers didn't mind you!

  4. I don't have a landline any more and never ever answer any number that is not in my contacts list which is just for family and friends. When one of these spammers ring I always let it ring out so not to indicate that the line is live. My mobile tells me that the unknown call is 'suspected spam or suspected fraud'. For commercial companies that ask for your number I give them my old pay cell number which rarely rings!

    Trying and irritating times!😈

NOT the Bridge of Sighs.....maybe a few Oooohs ! and Aaaaahs !

I've briefly dropped back on the Italian thingy whilst my head was in that zone last night.

Thinking of a Ponte to carry the railway above and came up with a design of my own.

Using my trusty Silhouette cutter and some good quality picture framing card I cut out the basic design together with a few embellishments around the circular brick inlays.

Here is the start with some generic Italian brick overlay made from a panel I downloaded and played around with, printed onto an A4 sticky backed label.

The arch inlays will get a painted finish eventually.....

And with some embellishments to the round insets....

More to be done when I get more inspiration !

We (10800 and me)  have got all these lovely buildings and will be building the layout in his memory that we think was in Grahame's mind.

Gosh, two years since his passing. Really do miss the old ***!

Happy days, Don't remember Ken Hoole, but defiantly Les Richards as the locomotive inspector with George Hinchcliff as his guvnor, it was Les who said in a deep Scottish accent one morning after starting early to help clean and light up Scotsman 'come here boy let's make a driver out of you' and so it was that under Les guidance I moved 4472 off the shed road, up to the Sands Road crossing and back over the pit road....

George and Les stayed in the hotel opposite Paignton station by Woolies, I remember going over there early one morning to get George when we discovered the flanges had been wearing - resulting in Scotsmen coming out of traffic to have her tyres repofiled by fitting a tool to the brake blocks and turning 4472 into her own wheel lathe being propelled by 6412 and yes it did work as we did the same in Easter 1975 with 7827 only the Manor was in steam when we did that.

My memory isn't what it was (!) and you're quite right about Les Richards (don't know where I got Ken Hoole from!🙃) You're quite right about the flange issue. IIRC TSR had removed the greasers from Kingwear and one lot was blaming the other for the rail and flange wear! Happy days!

One very happy memory was a footplate ride to KW and back!

I wonder who considered Jamieson kits 'pretty crude'? I'd change that description to 'basic', because there was nothing crude about how the parts were formed, and every one I've built (about 20+ now) fitted together perfectly. If 'quite a skill set' were needed to put them together, then it was a set acquired by any 'competent' loco-builder.

    Give me Jamieson any day!

    Well said Tony!

    .

Jamieson body. Still much to do! The solid framed chassis will be replaced by a Comet one.

  8. As you said Jack, there's nothing wrong at all with the EFE one. and it would be ideal for actual 'pan up' use on tramway wire (as we will on 'Balcombe' yard OHLE for mythical shunt moves!).

The JE one is really superb but is probably too delicate for operating use. We may replace it on one engine for a 'delicate' look for normal boat train running.

The JE pan on 20003 is only loosely fitted prior to painting.

It's nice to have a positive experience amongst all this 'negativity' and 'doom' elsewhere!😘

I've successfully converted mine to P4. It was the quickest and easiest conversion that I've ever done once that I'd got the bogie frame under plates off without damage. At one point I was fearing that I might break one or more of the six retaining clips, but gentle wiggling around with a small screwdriver under the clips and then 'ping', off they came. I used a P4 set of Accurascale Cl 37 axles which were surplus to my requirements. They might be about 0.5mm too small in diameter, but I'm not at all worried about such small discrepancies. (worn tyres perhaps!?) The Accurascale bearings and gears were slid off and the EFE ones slid onto the P4 axles, the p/b pickups were slightly bent out and the wheelsets dropped and the underframe clicked back in place. The Accurascale sets are available from their stock thus saving the usual wait from Ultrascale and there is a saving.

The bogies are a superb bit of design and grateful thanks to Graham 'Muz' for engineering-in the necessary space between the frames for those of us who model with track to 'the wider persuasion'.

We (10800, CK, Brinkly and Taz)  have another of these most welcome additions to the 'Balcombe'/' Ouse Valley Viaduct' layout stock, a green one this time. Both of them will be mostly used on the Newhaven boat trains in different eras and also fast goods (Norwood to Brighton amongst others.)

We also have a nearly completed model of 20003, the third and final one of three Raworth engines.

it's mostly scratchbuilt and again it will be used on Newhaven boats and also fast freights.
