  1. I think we'd all be very hard pushed to find many layouts on here that don't feature at least a couple of the 'cliche's mentioned on here, and that includes many that are held in considerably high regard. I agree with Olddudders, it's the quality of the modelling that counts more than anything else. After all, how many people on here would instantly dismiss the work of those members who are renowned for great workmanship just because they had a long-distance express starting at a single-line BLT or some shops at the top of a retaining wall? I sense not many, we'd all be cooing over the quality of the modelling - as it should be. As I work on my layout (mid-late 1950s North Yorkshire coastal BLT) and think of the trains I'll be running, I imagine the more 'typical' steam-hauled stuff plus the odd DMU, but also a small portion working of the 'Tees-Tyne Pullman'. Maybe a Summer Saturday working to the Midland region as well. These would hardly have been typical fare for a single line terminus around Redcar, but I'll enjoy it, and I intend to do it well. Thus, I see no problem with any percieved cliches.
  2. was of a mind to purchase a Hornby 'L1', but Ian Allan in Birmingham have none. :O( Liverpool may soon be hearing from me...

  3. Happy Christmas everybody.

  4. doesn't much fancy the trudge to Stoke sorting office in this weather, but with a nice shiny new carriage as a reward...

  5. Loads of snow in central Birmingham and I'm meant to be on a Voyager to Stoke tonight. Slim chance methinks.

  6. Twas a rainy day in Brummieland, and one resident in particular is soaked to the skin...

  8. Snow seems to be avoiding central Birmingham, local Beeb news is rubbing it in by showing us a white Peak District.

Yes, happily there was very little in Brum this morning, enabling me to go about my business with minimal difficulty!

  9. I'm not surprised that Bachmann chose to produce the LM 350. More chance of selling something that complements a lot of existing stock. They run alongside Pendolinos/Virgin Voyagers on every route they work, and from New Street upwards you could run one alongside any Central Trains/ATW/AXC/Northern/EMT stock you may happen to have. Aside from the absence of a 323 you could now do a pretty accurate present-day interpetation of anywhere from B'ham to Stoke-on-Trent and Liverpool. You could certainly do Crewe...B) A wise move on their part methinks.
  10. enjoyed Warley yesterday.

  11. is looking forward to Warley tomorrow.

  12. moves to Birmingham tomorrow.

  13. has had his finger sliced open by the lead on his girlfriends' Labrador. when it was being chased by a Jack Russell... Fun times.

  14. Turned down for another job. How can I be 'unsuitable' for working in a Pendolino buffet car?

I hope so Brinkly. :) I'm going to have rent to pay in a week... Pix, it took me ages to persuade them to let me onto Jobseekers - and they still tried to find ways to take it away from me.

  15. Another job applied for. Will this one bother to get back to me?

  16. Their website - http://www.herefordmodels.co.uk/ I used to visit this place with some frequency when I lived in Bath, and could never fault them. One time, when I dared imply that they might not have had a particular item in stock, the owner insisted on showing me their maze of a stockroom. No risk of this place not having the room for something!
  17. Spinal Tap on UK GOLD. Nice one.

  18. could do with a nice rock to crawl under right now.

  19. has lost his Young Persons Railcard, when he needs it tomorrow with the Advance purchase tickets he got ages ago. $&*@!!

  20. That shot of the 33 has to be a contender for Picture of the Week. Fantastic stuff.
  21. Just as an aside, I'm sure you're familiar with this site but it came up in another thread. Plenty of inspiration for you (although I'm not sure this fantastic layout has much shortage of it!) http://photosbyroddy.fotopic.net/
  22. Very nice indeed. I particularly like the space you've given over to a decent stretch of mainline. If you get chance check out 'New Mills', which will give you tonnes of inspiration for details to add to that part of your layout.
  23. spent a pleasant half hour at Crewe station this morning.

  24. There are a couple of photos about of 47s on this run from around 1965/6, so right at the beginning of your timeframe.
  25. That would go down well with me also, particularly the early 90s stuff. I'd also be happy to see more low relief industrial buildings.
