When I wrote I don't understand why they do it, I should have put that I don't understand what they do.

    No problem.

It is very clever but so beyond my comprehension that if a layout with that sort of control system ever went wrong and I was the only person around to put it right, it might as well go on a bonfire.

I am fortunate in a way, in that my son assisted me in designing the Arduino / MERG side of things.  There is a brief video on MERG showing my Moretonhampstead Signal Interlocking System.

I would imagine there was still a learning curve to Buckingham's control system, but no doubt, it gives you great satisfaction in keeping Buckingham running.

I cannot understand whey people cram their layouts and locos full of complex electronics when all you really need is something that gives you plus or minus 12v and an on/off switch.

The good thing about Model Railways is that there are so many fascinating aspects to it. I like to combine my interests in Electrical /Electronics and Computing with my Model Railways. At the same time, I can understand your pragmatic approach to Model Railway Electrics.

When I first saw this photograph I thought that looks a bit strange for the "Up Fast" and then saw your caption mention 'Loops'!

Great photographs taken during my teenage Spotting days.

Way back, in Steam World - probably 1990s, I interviewed the driver who brought Lion from Westbury every day. Afraid to say I can't remember his name but Simon Carstens knows who it was and has noted it elsewhere on RMweb on one of the many threads relating to this movie. The digitally enhanced version now available on Prime is well worth a look. (CJL)

Chris, take a look at your post on the previous page.

The original normal arrangement of 4 aspects arranged  vertically had green at the bottom, a yellow aspect at the top and red between the two yellows.

On the LMR when Bletchley Power Box Opened in1965 the 4 Aspect Signals were, reading from the bottom, Red, Yellow,  green, Yellow.

  6. Ray,

I have adapted Fabrice’s Signal Box and Tokenless Block Instrument Code for my Moretonhampstead Layout.

I use an Arduino Mega connected to MERG CBUS via a MCP2515 CAN BUS Module and use MERG CANMIO-SVO’s to Drive the Servos. The Lever Switches are connected to the Arduino’s Inputs and the Servos are controlled by sending on/off messages to the CBUS.

The  whole Signal Box Module can be unplugged by using a 4 PIN XLR Plug / Socket.

46232 'Duchess of Montrose', was she ever streamlined? Unlike some others of the class,  I cannot remember actually seeing her, but have the impression she was a green liveried member of the class, rather than red. Was that the case?

She was not one of the Streamlined variant but did carry the BR Green Livery.

  8. I've had two cars (both 2nd user) with "Self Park"; I've used the mode twice with the 1st car and Zero Times with the latest car. Providing you are gentle on the throttle and keep a good look out you should be ok. If you have forward and / or reversing cameras that's an added bonus.

I have long since banished fluorescent tubes and replaced the lot with LEDs. The flicker and hum associated with fluorescents always annoyed me.

Take a look at HF Florescent Fittings.

    Benefits of High Frequency Fittings.

    Flicker free and silent operation.

    ‘Instant’ starting.

Detects failed lamps, no more flashing on and off.

    Cold starting in sub-zero temperature.

    No stroboscopic effects.

    20-30% saving in running costs.

The intention is to make it an east-west route for freight as well as passengers.

1 example is providing an alternative for container traffic from East Anglia to Daventry, which currently had to use the Anglia main line, NLL & WCML which are all congested, but it will also provide access to further west too.

Wouldn't that require a reversal at Bletchley?

From your photograph it looks (at least to my un-trained eye) like the wheel set would lift out. I wonder what is holding it in place? I was hoping that an EM Gauge Wheelset would be drop-in replacement.

There may still be hope. Today I took the tip of a screwdriver and prised the axles upwards. The front one with the gears was a bit difficult but it came off eventually, seemingly without damage.

Thank you for the update; your findings are encouraging.
