  1. #oldschool Handheld digital image with 70-200 2.8 and iso set around 800asa, speed probably around 1/20th and it was chuffing cold and freezing. But this was still pushing the envelope in the early noughties to get a useable night, action image. Most of this evening’s pictures didn’t work out. On album covers this stylised F86 caught my eye today in vinyl! True geeks will see the genesis of the B737 from this, including the all flying tail.
  2. Yup, advection fog in met nerd terminology. At work we used to get fast forming radiation fog, the water table was so high, with the right (wrong), conditions the entire airport could go from unlimited visibility to a hundred metres or less in half an hour.
  3. I think that shows may become less of a 'club' thing. There are already examples out there, Larkrail for instance. These are currently small by nature, but I can forsee a change where groups rather than formal clubs will start organising specialist shows or expo's.
  4. I have DC versions of both and they are excellent runners. Some of the early Hornby 08's had bearing problems so steer clear of those if you're in the secondhand market for them. It was a short lived issue and not all examples suffered from it. Another type that may be worth looking at is the Heljan 05 if you're after a BR green locomotive and the prototype region etc isn't of major concern. Bachmann 08's are also a good bet, quality reliable models, noting you've already been hunting for one.
  5. That response highlights how out of touch (respectfully), you have been with D&E modelling, and the impact across the genres, scales that RTR has on kit development, manufacturing and subsequent sales. It’s not limited to the Uk market, the same is evident in the North American HO market that im familiar with too.
  6. You don’t need access to their books, just speak to them. As soon as RTR O gauge diesels landed on these shores the kit market was almost extinguished overnight.
  7. Certainly not the case within my contacts. I can think of multiple examples where one specific kit manufacturer had their market immediately erased in effect by RTR introductions of the same prototypes.
  8. Seeing as it’s at least the second year and second livery design, it obviously sells into the toy market, Hornby collectors, and worldwide millions of Beatles ephemera collectors. So it does Hornby’s bottom line good, and it doesn’t do the hobby any harm at all. If selling some products like these keeps Hornby and other manufacturers solvent that’s a good thing. If at some stage someone then engages with the hobby what’s the problem? An interesting comparison in that in the plastic kit world some manufacturers produce egg planes/ships etc and plastic modellers don’t complain about them bringing the hobby or manufacturer into ‘disrepute’.
  9. There wasn’t an answer to the question, hence the assumption it was provided by Artificial Intelligence.
  10. Obviously the responses above are being supplied by Artificial Intelligence.
  11. Still not prepared to say what you think Warley MRC’s responsibility to the hobby is then? Significantly :- Definition.. in a sufficiently great or important way as to be worthy of attention. Entertainingly, the example of use I found seems quite appropriate. “significantly, he has refused to give a straight answer to this question”
  12. Far from it a balanced, positive 2 minute piece. Thank you itv for some researched journalism.
  13. I’ve not seen any indication that the numbers had significantly diminished. They have mentioned the practicality of running the show, in its existing format. Presumably if they downsize and use their local village hall with ten layouts and five traders, they can still call it the National show and they’ll have passed your responsibility litmus test.
  14. The only responsibility they had as a limited company was to the shareholders. As a company they have decided the current business model is unsustainable for various reasons. They have said they’re looking at other options including a smaller show. So responsibly they have : A. Mentioned a few years back (RM interview IIRC) that Warley Show would see significant changes including downsizing. B. Completed their run at the NEC and advised everybody in good time that the NEC show will not happen in 2024. C. Presumably have acted in accordance with their legal Limited Company regulations, and their clubs constitution in the cessation of hosting their club exhibition at the NEC. Please tell us what specific responsibility you feel they had to the hobby regarding the show?
  15. Whoah! Easy Tiger, you’ll scare the horses! It’s funny that Peter Marriot who was demonstrating scenery on the Woodland Scenics/Bachmann Warley stand had an utterly engaged group of five or six kids making a postcard sized section of scenery. He was doing it stage by stage almost like a production line. And this was about ten minutes before closing, and it had been similar all day long. You had to visit a RTR manufacturers stand, and go to Warley to see it though….

That’ll be a no to the challenge then. I can’t say I’m surprised.

    Book of the Year

Reads fine for me, that’s his style, some of his own pieces to camera are a bit clunky. It makes the book authentic rather than edited to perfection, it’s what he wants to say not how someone thinks he should say it. Here’s a challenge for you, or anyone else who feels that paragraph is poorly written. Re-write it and post it here maintaining Luke’s style/personality as an excercise in how it would improve the story. I chose that particular paragraph because it resonated very, very strongly with me, reminding me of times watching trains above Welwyn North. As a photographer the description gives me a mental picture of what he was seeing and an insight into the atmosphere and lighting he wanted to capture in the composition of his image.
  18. The axles sit inside the chassis casting held in place by turned bearing collars. See picture here of underside of chassis pic no10 https://albionyard.com/2016/12/25/Hornby-masterclass-peckett-w4-r3427/ It may be that one of those bearing collars has moved inwards and now sits entirely inside the casting rather than bridging through it. With the construction of the chassis I think you’re on the right path that something has moved out of place when cleaning it. The pickups are very flexible so make sure none of those have twisted or got caught with your re-assembly. The other check to do would be to make sure the coupling rod isn’t bent or twisted which would be very unlikely, but t worth checking if all others draw a blank.

    Book of the Year

@big jim I had a sneaky suspicion you’d have a changed perspective on him, and wish more people were open minded enough like you were to at least take a closer look.
  20. Good for you never putting in a no show, despite planning months in advance, my team hasn’t always been as lucky. https://albionyard.com/2011/09/30/manchester-cancellation/ https://albionyard.com/2019/09/18/cancellation-scalefourum-2019/ It’s obvious that shows need organising, need commitments from people and they should be financially viable. Just because they’ve been done in a particular way in the past, doesn’t mean they can’t or shouldn’t change.
  21. So what we’re saying here is, someone has to get themselves organised if they want to attend a show in whatever capacity or duration they’re attending in.
  22. As I said. It goes with the territory, exactly the same as having to work Christmas Day, family birthdays etc. If you want to attend a show and you do shift work you have to live with the restrictions of your employment work contracts.
  23. Hi Tony, No is the simple answer. The work ethic is just that, “professional” to get the job done safely efficiently and on time. People with specialised skills/experience taking on particular responsibilities in the setting up and down. Obviously Heaton Lodge is an extreme example, but over the years I’ve noted plenty of layouts big and small with little co-ordination amongst team members, on set up and break downs, wanderers going to different layouts and chatting etc. I’m all too aware of the ‘normal’ two day show routine. I was perhaps different in that I often had to take four days leave to attend a show, as my occupation is 24/7/365, so I don’t see the leave requirement from typical Monday to Friday working as over onerous. The same would be true of a supermarket worker they too would likely need to take more leave to attend a show than a M-F worker. Surely if someone want to exhibit or assist at a show, the inconveniences come with the territory?
  24. I’m well aware of the logistics of transporting, setting up, running and break down of a large layout. Below isn’t complete, we still had to add the crowd barriers 360 degrees Good layout design, good teamwork, and a good venue organiser makes a massive difference to the efficiency and practicality of those elements. Putting up Heaton Lodge above takes about 2.5 days from bare floor to complete, and 12 hours complete to bare floor and one truck loaded. It requires a professional work ethic to do that though, and that gives huge satisfaction to the team to achieve that sequence. If the current stock of big exhibits are becoming no longer practical for the teams that built them that’s unfortunate. However, that opens up opportunities for others if they want to meet that challenge. I note that the layouts listed by Tony are to my knowledge club layouts, a factor no doubt of the era and communications accessibility they were made in. What has been shown with more recent large layouts is they don’t need to be club built, they can be constructed by much smaller dedicated collaborators, working on friends projects. In the US/Can and the EU modular layouts are built and exhibited, something that hasn’t been exploited here to any great degree. Whilst losing the Warley NEC is unfortunate, it might reflect that the traditional club organisation type show requires a very different model in the future.
