And the two destroyers that were escorting the Belgrano were British built. Jamie

When Leeds City Libraries tried to make us all use a machine to take books back and get new ones. I was always the awkward one that went to the counter to get mine stamped. When asked why I replied that I liked to interact with a human being. I believe that Vickers sold arms to both sides in the Boer War and certainly made money by selling battleships to opposing nations in South America. Jamie

Two thi gs,. Apparently a class 331 has run as a proving train from Manchester Victoria to Stalybridge. Secondly this video of works at Ravensthrpe has just been posted. No very informative but there does seem to be a lot of work going on. Jamie -
According to my kids one is typing this reply. Jamie

Cheques are still quite popular here in La France profonde. The older end use them a lot and the tills all have a printer that puts all the info on them. However the search for Le Stylo doesn't start till after the cheque has been printed usually. My kids don't carry cash. I feel naked without some cash on me. I make a point of using cash at our favourite restaurant when Patricia explained how much card payments cost them. My kids say I'm a dinosaur but I don't care. As for Amazon I agree with both Barry and IDand use it as little as possible. I detest their business practices. Jamie

Good moaning from a sunny Charente where there are very few self checkouts though we have to bag our own stuff. The biggest holdup is old ladies paying by cheque. By the time they've bagged everything then searched their handbag for the chequebook, then the pen, it seems like manage. The MRC lunch went well though it was 84 miles not 60. On the way home I stopped briefly for a coffee. By some peculiar coincidence I was by a railway line and in the 10 minutes I was there a train came past with a loco that I needed. Happy days. No chatting to a 4 year old today as she is on a sleepover. We will talk to the girls tomorrow. Meantime the G word beckons. Jamie

Bradford installed one on the new inner ring road in the mid 80's. Set to about 37 in a 40 limit. It worked. Jamie

Good moaning from the Charente. I managed to take my trailer to the tip yesterday and reversed it all the way to the right skip without jacknifing it. The entrance is awkward and it would be impossible to turn the trailer and car round so I have to reverse in without the trailer heading down the lorry ramp. My first ever attempt took me 10 goes. I wouldn't like to try one of those road trains though. Anyway a new day is dawning and I'm off to a n MRC lunch 6O miles north of here. I might even do a bit of trainspotting on the way home. Jamie

Eccles Cakes are always welcome in The Charente. Strangely enough we did find some Mint Jelly, another regular request, in a bargain store called Noz. Jamie

The videos just keep coming.this is the latest just posted by Cuemaster. They have really cracked on with the arch over the canal. Obviously not wanting to disrupt the cruising season at Easter. Jamie

HS2 Have just posted this. Cecilia has finished her drive and broke through today. Great work by the two teams over the past 3 years. Jamie

An SD40 at full chat sounds pretty good Jamie

There appears to be very little coordination. One spring 3 of the four main roads in and out of Pontefract had long term temporary traffic lights on them. I pulled rank and made a very strong complaint to the Highways department due to the effect this was having on Emergency Service response times. For some strange reason at least one set was removed sharpish. Jamie

Must be the French electrickerry. Strangely enough I don't get the duplicated pages over here but it was very slow to load. Morning orders have now been posted. It now appears that I will be going to buy the strimmer on my own. Jamie

Another short video about the Colne Valley Viaduct. It shows the launching girder moving forward to build the next span as it crosses the Grand Union Canal. A narrow boat goes under near the end. A rather nice juxtaposition of 200 years of progress in transport technology. Jamie

Good moaning from the Charente. It's a tad cool but fortunately not frosty. The plum trees are in blossom so we don't want a frost at this stage. I like my plum jam, plum chutney and plum crumbles. An expedition to buy a new strimmer may take place this morning and a tip run this afternoon. Not a lot else to report for the time being. Jamie

Aren't children wonderful. Jamie

That happened on another occasion. A certain most wanted murderer, namely Donald Nielso, the Black Panther, kidnapped two officers at gunpoint and made them drive him several miles. Th car eventually stopped and the officers tackled Nielso during which the shotgun went off. The three of them tumbled out of the car outside a chip shop where a group of miners wearing boots were queuing. The saw the fight and thought that it was their job to fight with Nottinghamshire's finest, not some little twerp from Yorkshire. in. Mr Nielson was remarkably subdued when he was booked in. Later the next more the two officers were taken to see the Chief to be congratulated. The staff officer tried to reprimand them for their appearance. Their replies have not been made public. Jamie

I suspect that the heads pans wilbe done at the same time. Jamie

I mowed thousands of them yesterday. Jamie

Round here we call them Tarquins and most of them are Brits with false accents. Good moaning from a sunny Charente. Shopping g was shopped and the sun shone so after lunch the tractor was brought out of the shed and the big weed patch was mowed. A 2 hour job but very pleasant in the sun. Several butterflies of various varieties plus some large beetles were seen. There was even a lizard on the Mairie wall. No Robins yet. Today we are off to colllecct some firewood that a friend is disposing of. Then who knows what else the day will bring. Jamie

Simon has just posted a video showing progress on the Colne Valley viaduct. It's interesting to see the temporary support for Dominique on the south side of the canal to allow them to place the first proper segment on the abutment. Jamie

Use of the word Posh, by our French friends and neighbours surprised me but use it they did in it's usual meaning. In this case to describe a new inhabitant of the village. They had no idea of the origin of the word and laughed when I explained it to them. My grandparents, who worked in India were definitely Starboard out and Port home. Jamie
