  1. We went shopping yesterday. When I got back to the car, I couldn't find my sunglasses; checked under the seat and all. Returned to the store and the fourth clerk looked at me and said "You're wearing them." They're magnetic clips and aren't as dark as some others. Returned to the car and told my wife. She hadn't seen them. Hot today and probably rest of week. One of our newspapers is predicting thunderstorms. A few moments spent muddling today -- repainted the end of a coach. A walk in the park this AM. Passed by Goosey Gander day care, where all the Canada Goslings are supervised.
  2. The fellow modellers you come across in New York.
  3. I've favoured an Egyptian flavoured layout called "Tooting Common".
  4. My mother came from Edinburgh, my father was Canadian and spent almost all my life in Canada (one possibly formative summer in Scotland at age 2). I think I've shed the vestiges of an Ottawa Valley accent. My sister claimed that Dad was the last person in Ontario to consistently pronounce "clerk" as "clark". Americans think we say "oot and aboot". I think they call the top of the house the "ruff". My cousin was working in London. She said that any time a Scottish friend phoned, she'd get a message "Your mother called". I must have requited love. We spent the day moving bookcases in the basement room (the one without trains).
  5. Where is Harry King's compound? I can't find it on my quite old street map. And where would the New Ankh station go? I'm not quite ready to re-read all my books again.
  6. Guelph, apparemtly, was the hottest spot in Canada today. We hit 32 C . One forecast said even hotter tomorrow with thunderstorms. Big number on the windchill humidex. I cleaned and dusted my workdesk today. This may be the last of the re-arranging. Told the replacement door for the RV fridge is in. Pick up tomorrow.
  7. In one of the later Oz books, Dorothy goes exploring and gets trapped on Monday Mountain, where it is always Monday and every day is wash day.
  8. My version of Minories was almost the only bit of my old layout to survive the house move. It's called St. Mary Axe* and located in East London. * pronounced Simmery Axe.
  9. I can't tell now. Is New Ankh the main station for Ankh-Morpork or the first station out? (Should I get out Mrs Bradshaw's Guide?)
  10. The only problem I had with my Clan was the front bogie fell apart. It first expanded so that the wheels wouldn't turn, then it broke apart when I took the coupling out.
  11. Instead of PVA, consider Acrylic Matt Medium or Woodland Scenics Scenery Cement which do not dry quite so solidly. Or WS Foam Glue. I've wondered about putting something (Wax paper?) between the roadbed and the baseboard, then removing it after the glue & ballast has set.
  12. I have my own opinions on converting books to movies/TV. I don't believe that anything longer than a novellette or novella can be accommodated in a 2-hour (or less) movie. Brideshead Revisited was done very nicely in 17 (?) hourly segments. If you are going to do a musical or opera you can't have anything longer than a short story. On the other hand, I found the movie of The Wrong Box better than the book, which I am still less than halfway through.
  13. Mark How many do you need? I have a small collection that I removed. Collection at your own risk.
  14. I'm wondering if a mix of scales for carriages to match dwarves, trolls, those creatures in the middle, might work. When we run Lostock Jcn, we're allowed to bring other trains. Found that an HO diesel didn't fit through OO platforms. Other HO coaches banged against scenery. The wagon turntables could be pushed by trolls. I don't understand the need for separate arrival and departure platforms, but it does add a lot of movements to the station workings.
  15. I don't know how many books we have -- I could spend an afternoon measuring the shelves but some of them are double stacked. Most of my non-fiction is railway stuff. Most of the fiction is science-fiction and fantasy. I am working on getting a full collection of P.G.Wodehouse. SWMBO is more literary but lately has been into U.S. presidential biographies. I saw one of the LOTR movies but unstand that they omitted my favourite bit -- the last half of book 3. We had a sudden short intense storm today. Went to the motorhome for the first time since December. Checked that the engine started and got details to replace the refrigerator door. Found that some rubber moulding (covering screws at corners) had shrunk and was coming away; it caught when I opened the door.
  16. If there are no moving bits, what can you scavenge for the railway when it dies?
  17. A quick suggestion: When I'm doing point wiring (or other polarity sensitive) I use clip leads (test leads with alligator clips) on the wires until I know I have them the right way round.
  18. The beard trimmer worked pretty well. The length is now generally even. Next job may be the hair. We have to move the motorhome. The lady where we were storing it died (aged 91) and the posh neighbours want them moved -- apparently they liked Mrs. Bayne enough to put up with them. We have until the end of the month.
  19. I missed yesterday due to no connection. Today I bought a beard trimmer. We will see what kind of damage I (or SWMBO) can do with it. Instructions only cover how to put it together and are a bit vague on that. The local book store still only has the magazines that were there when they shut down -- April issues of Trains & MR; February BRM. A few newer ones, but not what I read.
  20. We've often driven the highway 10 south of that dam -- once each way in the summer. There was quite a nice lake where the road crosses.
  21. Having heard this for many years, can someone clarify what is meant by a "damned lie"?
  22. I have a full 3rd with a white roof. Bought in the 60s; our hobby shop had a shelf full of teak coaches.
  23. Further to the Mount Rushmore posts, there actually is a steam railroad that goes behind the mountain. The view, however, ...
