  1. I have experimenting with the rust effect weathering dye from Modelmates. The base wagon has been weathered with sooty black and grey washes with the rust applied last. First results are very encouraging I think:
  2. Eskmuir by Tony Bucknell (caley439 on here) A 4mm / 00 layout based on Brechin in 1958 to 1964. Video at Eskmuir will be appearing at: Railex2013, Aylesbury on 25&26th May 2013 Wigan FRM, Wigan on 15&16th June 2013 Huddersfield RM, Holmfirth on 26&27th October 2013
  3. There is nothing dramatically wrong with the Lima Sealion. The internal baffle plate is too big, it should only go half height and there should be mesh canopies over the handwheels that operate the chutes. Depending on era, there may have been issues with bogies but I certainly used them after fitting canopies and ballast loads. They can be made to look good if you paint / weather the chutes (metal silver with a light rust wash) and the inside of the hopper.
  4. Now had a run courtesy of Sherrifston. Very smooth and steady. Long rigid wheelbase was a bit bouncy at full speed over code 100 frogs and joints but coped well. Very happy with the model.
  5. Paying list price is never great but couldn't resist. Model looks great. It is extremely heavy. Both wheels are driven. It does not look suitable for em / P4 conversion if simply pulling Heljan wheelsets as the chassis block cut outs are not wide enough. It may be OK if a narrow profile tyre was used as a drop in replacement otherwise its a full strip down and milling job. Not had chance to run yet.
  6. Heljan are selling them at the SECC ModelRail Scotland show. Just picked up E79962 in dark green with whiskers for £114.95. What a gorgeous model.
  7. Looking through my photos for another topic and found these. Amazing to think it was 16 years ago, a few months after EWS had taken over the 3 railfreight companies and the groundswell of optimism that accompanied it. Also sad that TE depot is now long gone along with many of the locos and wagons seen in the photos. 1 Thornaby depot 2 08813 Thornaby WRD 13 MAY 1996 - pottering about between the Wagon repair shops and Tees Yard 3 37332 + 37682 Thornaby TMD 13 JUNE 1996 - 37682 in the temporary gloss white used on ex-works locos as soon as it was known EWS would be taking over Loadhaul 4 37684 Tees yard 13 MAY 1996 - heading east, possibly for BSC Skinningrove 5 37718 Darlington Station 13 MAY 1996 - waiting to head north to Tyne Yard with a rake of Rudd spoil wagons 6 37885 Tees Yard 13 JUNE 1996 - another ex-works 37 in temporary 'Ghost' white livery before being repainted into EW&S Maroon and Gold 7 47218 + 47245 Passing Tees Yard 13 MAY 1996 - this was an RfD european service heading south from Wilton. 8 56035 + 56084 passing Tees Yard 13 MAY 1996 on an intermodal 9 56039 + 56111 Tyne Yard 13 JUNE 1996 - ready to head north, either to Carlisle and the Scottish Opencast mines or into Northumberland. 10 56062 Tees Yard 13 MAY 1996 - empty rake of potash wagons from Tees Dock before heading back to Boulby mine 11 56108 Tees Yard 13 MAY 1996 - aggregate boxes - not sure if ballast, Lime or potash 12 56112 Tees Yard 13 JUNE 1996 13 60004 Tees Yard 13 MAY 1996 - eastbound steel slab \ bloom for either BSC Lackenby Redcar or BSC Skinningrove 14 60023 Tees Yard 13 MAY 1996 - eastbound steel slab \ bloom for either BSC Lackenby Redcar or BSC Skinningrove 15 60094 passing Tees Yard 13 MAY 1996 - imported coal heading for the midlands or Aire Valley power stations
  8. Two more pictures for you 1 Mixed rake of dogfish and sealions at Healey Mills 2 Shark Plough \ brake van in middle of consist of Sealion / Seacow Cheers
  9. If it was kept simple and was all of one type for the 1990s If vacuum braked, the common types of wagon could be (The Shark can easily be recoded to vac or dual braked, there were many of each type) Dogfish, Catfish (kit only), Sealion, Grampus, Clam and Tope (as done by Hornby) and there were also ex-mineral wagons used for spoil - some with holes cut in side (ex-16T) and some ex 21T(?), Turbot. Air braked common wagons were: Sealion, Seacow, some Grampus, Rudd (as Hornby), Sea Urchin (some ex SPA and OCA with welded up doors as done by Bachmann, some with new rigid bodies which are kit only), ZCA ex OBA. Later types such as the ZKA limpet can also be mixed in. Here are a few old pics I have found in my collection 1 ZKV 386282 Bescot tmd 04 SEPTEMBER 1999 - this is one of the ex-21T (?) mineral wagons used mainly for spoil traffic. 2 Didcot yard 10 AUGUST 1996 - a mix of ex-mineral wagons and dogfish in arake (note the tail light) 3 37068 Tyne Yard 20 MAY 1994 - mix of grampus (note new ballast) and empty turbots 4 37174 Warrington Arpley 17 APRIL 1997 - mix of TOPE and Dogfish wagons
  10. In Dutch livery times, unfitted freights did not run. What do you mean by flat sided wagons? The Dapol grampus would have been compatible as they were vac braked. The clam was also vac braked and ran with the grampus on spoil and ballast workings
  11. Exciting times ahead. Always loved these units chugging into Reading station.
  12. Having got my hands on one of these wonderful models last week, I am waiting with baited breath for the 21/29. 2 questions for dapoldave Any clue when ( season and year will do) the 21and 29 might be released? When will the order forms be going to shops as I need to reserve several
  13. On the bright side of fantasy liveries, those good old boys who inherited trainload freight northeast did not venture as far as the south west so their unspeakable but delightful black and orange would be a step too far..... Or would it? Loadhaul black anyone?
  14. Magic, thanks for the help everyone, much food for thought. cheers Graham
  15. Has anybody got knowledge of these ballast hoppers in terms of geographical spread. I am thinking Scotland (Perth or Abredeen) in 1960s and what livery would be applicable? thanks Graham
  16. "Diesel Days Scotland" by Brian J. Dickson has a photo of D5713 working a Glasgow bound passenger train south through Stirling in Aug 1959. D5713 is plain green and sadly has wrapwaround windows but modellers license will see the Hattons variant appearing on Eskmuir from time to time on the Perth / west coast parcels.
  17. Hornby Mag also has a review. Model looks very good to me, always been fascinated by these lumps so will probably have to take the plunge.
  18. OTAs in stock at Arcadia Models, Shaw today. Look very tasty so waiting for older version with relish
  19. DIESEL: as a chiild \ teenager: KYLE OF TONGUE WHEATSONE BRIDGE (MMRS) RUNSWICK LEAMSIDE & BOLDON JUNC As an Adult TETLEYS MILLS & WIBDENSHAW & CANADA ROAD & FARKHAM & BLACKMILLS Steam: Colquarn engine shed (can't remember spelling) Gauxholme Viaduct (I cut my teeth on this and what a baptism of fire it was when my Lima 37 took the paint off all the finescale chairs!) Halifax Kings Cross Paignton (not sure its exact name but a marvelous vista) Chee Tor (train in landscape)
  20. I fall into both camps with this subject. I am born & bred on the Pennines so know how much benefit the midlands & north will get from this link, however, I live in the Chilterns so know how much ill feeling there is to the line. As a Civil Engineer, I know we have the capability to make the lines passage through the Chilterns & Warwickshire unobtrusive (this just needs to be pushed through the consultation) and also that some of the objections being posted are totally ficticious. An example is a claim in our village mag that the construction works need a 5 mile wide corridor. This is total nonsense. At most, we (as Civil Engineers) would get 50m either side, more likley 10m or even 5m width either side of the rail footprint. On balance, I vote yes with caveats.
  21. 2 and 3 car in Red & Silver please so I can commemorate the Man Vic to Huddersfield via Brighouse bone shaker. Ditto in original WYPTE red
  22. Well happy and annoyed all at the same time. Paid a small premium at Halifax for a second hand Hornby 29 to detail up and run on Eskmuir but delighted that I will be able to replace this with modern 29 and also with a plain green 21 as well B) Anyone for creating a sound chip of fitters throwing spanners and cursing so I can park one on the depot
  23. nice . Doubt it will happen but there is always hope....
