  1. I remembered that as "When the music stops Daphne Oxenford will be here to tell you another story" Strewth I am going back almost 70 years to Listen with Mother which was IIRC at 1:45 p.m. Dave
  2. No Mike, we've decided to invest the money in having some work done on the house However I did buy her some flowers and a couple of bottles of Mateus Rose and received a bottle of Penderyn in return. Cheers, Dave
  3. My school motto, added just before I left was "Veritas praevalebit" - "Truth will prevail" As Happy Hippo, BR2975 and NHY581 are all Kairdiff boys as well as a few others it was Fitzalan Technical High School for Boys which I left on 5th February 1965. Dave Who celebrates his Ruby Wedding with SWMBO today
  4. Well folks I am amazed that so many support my total lack of support or even liking for sporting activities especially when played by overpaid prima-donas. However if you would like to join me in drinking large amounts of Port and Penderyn (not in the same glass I hasten to add) well I am game Dave
  5. All this talk of sport with tennis, cricket and kick-ball. Am I the only man in the UK who doesn't give a s0d for any of it Here I am a Welshman with no time for Rugby Dave
  6. IIRC Powercabs were originally sold with 1.5 amp power supplies but now sold with 2 amps supplies. I've used Powercabs for over a decade and have set it to show current draw instead of time. Never seen it go above 0.6 amps. It also powers the eleven Cobalt motors on Danemouth. Dave
  7. I use Cobalt motors and have also left the springs in place. When I change points, which are controlled via the Powercab I am reassured when I hear the click of the points changing. Dave
  8. At the moment Castell Danemouth is erecting defences to guard against marauding hippos. Today SWMBO and I are celebrating our Ruby Wedding so she has presented me with a bottle of Penderyn. I know that a certain mischievous pachiderm has a fondness for this particular tipple hence the implementation of defence measures to protect this precious spirit. Cheers, Dave
  9. Danemouth is virually the same as your plan in mirror image. I operate from the front using a Powercab and mini panel. All the points have Cobalt motors and can be operated from the Powercab' I have streamlined things by having macros programmed for various routes which simplifies operation wherever I am in front of the layout. Macros detailed here Danemouth Operating Diagram.pdf Dave
  10. When I started work with Wales Gas Board in 1965 I remember walking past a gasholder that was being demolished. The ironwork had been removed and a large 30+ foot hole was being filled by lorries bringing in rubble, soil etc. As I watched a couple of men came out from the cashiers office carrying several coin bags which were emptied into the pit. Turns out they were an accumulation of filed halfpennies that had been removed from the coinboxes of the old "shilling" meters over the years. Dave
  11. Like many I look forward to the arrival of the long awaited Manor. However I have not forgotten the myriad problems associated with the DJM 14xx - luckily I held back and ended up saving myself a possible pile of trouble. I am tempted to do the same with the Manor and await initial reactions on RMWeb before investing in either one or the other of them. I can't justify Danemouth having one of each Dave
  12. I had both the Bachmann and Dapol versions. Both are DCC with the Bachmann also having Bachmann's sound. The Dapol unit was a poor runner and I rarely used it. I replaced it with the Bachmann unit which runs far better and has absolutely superb sound. Bought the 117 at the same time which also has really good sound. Dave
  13. In Cardiff council houses had a gas point near each fireplace for a gas poker, certainly the two my parents lived in did, they were postwar builds. Very handy in the 1960s when we switched to gas fires. And yes I remember the bathroom freezing in winter, eventually my father who used to get up first for work started lighting a paraffin heater in there for the rest of us who arose an hour afterwards. Dave p.s. Both houses were fitted originally with the awful (and potential dangerous) Dorman and Smith electrical sockets
  14. Where I live in Cardiff (Whichurch and Rhiwbina) has the option of Fibre to the Premises for the past two years, which I've taken. The overhead line from the pole was replaced with one that contains fibre core and copper cores so the landline is still on copper. My internet speed is supposed to be 100 mbps down and 50 up. However my download speed is usually about 250 mbps. The fibre cores teminate in an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) in the hall for which you provide a power socket, The ONT then connects to a router. Incidentally pole has a small sign at about eye level - yellow background with "Caution Overhead Fibre" on it. My daughter lives in on a new build estate that has fibre to the house including VOIP - no copper. Dave
  15. There was a Phurnacite plant in Abercwmboi at one time - this is it in production back in the 1970s - its manfacture is hardly smokeless! Dave
  16. Aberayron appears as a track plan and signalling Diagram in Volume One of R J Clark's Historical Survey of Great Western Stations. Dave
  17. Dear Mr Hunt, As part of the therapy to cure you of your aversion to our glorious Pannier tank here is an image of five of them together With all best wishes, Churchward & Collett
  18. I retired at the end of November 2012 at the age of 65. I had been made redundant as a senior manager in British Gas at the age of 48 with an extremely good payout which included adding 5 years to my pensionable service in the final salary scheme and that pension starting to pay on my fiftieth birthday. I got a job with a small financial institution and joined their scheme for almost 17 years. The result is a good pension; I am sad however that the yougsters these days will not see the sort of benefits that I received when I gave up work. Employers of staff in money purchase schemes have apparently reduced their contribution to such schemes. Dave
  19. Thanks for clarifying that Andy, aren't computers wonderful, it's no wonder we are both tonsurally challenged Dave
  20. They appear in the subforum listing but not VNC Dave
  21. Sorry Andy but it doesn't work for me either in Firefox or Edge on the latest version of Windows 10. I've cleared the RMWeb cookies, turned off NoScript etc. rebooted and reignored some topics in Wheeltappers but they still appear for me. Dave
  22. I am pleased to say that in the suburb of the Principality where Chateau Danemouth is located there are no vagrant sheep. Mind you I can think of a couple of suburbs were such a sheep would end up as next Sunday's dinner Dave
  23. Talking of Magnesium I think it was the principal component of the old fashioned flash bulbs - remember them? The flashgun contained a small battery and a Capacitor which caused the magnesium to light. Don't forget the blue bulbs needed for colour film to balance it to the colour temperature of daylight. Dave
  24. Both SWMBO and myself have LPAs which are held by our solicitor. They are regiatered but the solicitor will only release them if I authorise it (for mine) or a letter from a registered medical professional. Dave
