  1. I used to use Coloron Jacobean Dark Oak wood dye, but like all things the H&SE have now messed around with it and it does not keep its colour and also does not seem to soak into the timber.

You lot will laugh at what a use now but I'm happy with the way it looks, and it's a lot easier to apply. I use Halfords Satin Black Paint ( not stain ), spray it on and let it dry for a day, even though it's touch dry in 30 minutes.

Build and lay the track down and then just wipe the sleepers with a cloth soaked in thinners, not soaking wet just slightly damp so it's easy to control the amount of paint left on.

The colour to me is spot on what I have been trying to recreate.

  2. Hi David,

Well that didn't take you long, the tail lamps look the bizz. Would there be any chance of a look at the vero board set up, as I'm a right numpty when it comes to electrical set ups.

I have never heard of " youchoos ", I thought for some reason you had used one of Modelu's lamps and drilled up through the lamp body, brilliant that will save me some work.

I have decided to use a hex frog juicer for the two slips on the layout for two reasons,

1/ as above I am rubbish at electrics,

2/ my back is not to good and by the time it would take me to sort out the polarities under the baseboards, my back would be in an even worse condition.

Apart from that I love modelling in 7mm. : )

    ATB,

  3. Hi David,

I look forward to any updates regarding the lighting of the brake van, and I will store them away for reference as I intend to also go down this route in the future although I've got enough on my plate at the moment.

I have a spare 2 channel chip, would that be enough to control directional lights and lighting in the van? This is still a grey area for me so any info would be helpful for the future.

    ATB,

    Martyn.

  4. Right I've used a different app, so far so good,

    The goods loop,

    And the new turnout,

My friends Class 33, this loco means a lot to him as he actually use to drive the real one as a driver on the Southern.

  5. Hi Simon,

I still have another 13 tortoise motors to wire up, which should hopefully be fairly straight forward. Also I have the diagram that you did for me regarding the linking of the motors at the crossover.

I may chicken out and buy a Hex frog juicer for the two slips, I know you are old school, but I will go for the easy option ( I think ).....

    All the best,

    Martyn.

  6. Hi Guys,

Just a quick update, but first I must say a big “ Thank You ” to Simond of this parish. I now have DC or DCC operating on the layout controlled by just one switch, maybe it does not sound that amazing, but to me it’s a milestone and it would not of happened without Simon’s help, diagrams and patience.

The goods loop is now in place, and also a further turnout which will feed the coal yard and also a cripple siding, see photos.

Forget the photos for now, even though I had the iPad held in the right orientation all the photos are upside down,grrrrr....... And as I’ve had a long day at work I cannot be ar**d to try and rectify them now, maybe tomorrow.

  7. Both excellent Martyn, nicely worn and slightly disused look.

    So the ballasting starts.

Are you having point rodding? I am and I'm having to fit the rodding in before I can think about ballasting, or at least the supports for the stools at least.

    Jinty ;)

    Hi Jinty,

Yes I brought all the point rodding stools at Telford this year from our good friend Alan at Modelu, and what a great job he has made of them, although you need good eyesight to see all the detail which is there. I will also be putting the bases and stools in place first before the ballasting really starts.

If you look closely the red dots on the baseboard are where the stools will be going.

I have finished laying the goods loop and the head shunt, but I haven’t put any photos up yet as I think it’s better to show a bit at a time, saying that I still have loads of droppers to solder on still, but I’m slowly getting there......

    Cheers,

    Martyn.

  8. Hi Guys,

Thanks to Don and Martin for the helpful advice above, I will certainly need a more drastic way of fool proofing the lifting hatch, watch this space.

On Church Norton the peace and quiet has been disturbed in the last hour by the approaching rumble of a p/way train, so hopefully some trackwork and ballasting will be taking place over the weekend.

I chose two photos as one seemed to have better lighting while the other was more in focus, I think....

  9. Glad we old gits clarified it though LOL!

    Kindest,

    CME

    Hi CME,

Ha, " old gits " are you quoting my comment to Paul ( OzzyO) ....

    All the best,

    Martyn.

  10. Hi Alan,

Yes I meant the cranks in relation to the balance weights, I'm afraid I'm not sure why I brought quartering into the discussion. Probably another senior moment, so sorry to whoever is reading my waffle, I stand corrected, although I must agree concerning the " slop " on the con rod holes : )

    Regards,

    Martyn.

  11. Well you two must be the lucky ones, as I've never seen one yet and I've seen a few. When I spoke to the Dapol rep at Telford he said the quartering was not taken into consideration when the final mock up was agreed on.

    Martyn.

  12. I did not bother to alter the cranks etc, but the brass was cleaned with solvent and brass black(copper carbonate) was added to blacken the brass, cleaned again and oiled, removes to brass effect! Very reliable model indeed, looking forward to the 3F next week.

It wasn't so much the look of those brass spacers that bugged me, but how far the quartering was out. I have looked at a few 08's since then and they're all the same, all out by a mile. So that was the main reason I removed the cranks.

    Martyn.

  13. Mr OzzyO,

If you read all my threads you would of seen on page 19 my (light bulb socket plunger parts) : )

Keep up at the back, laddie

  14. Hi CME,

Regarding the cutting of the axles, I used a piercing saw as the axles are quite hard and I thought that if I used a cutting disc the axles might heat up and cause a problem with the bearings or final drive gear.

I still need to weather mine, but I have a 101 other jobs on my plate at the moment. Still better to be busy than bored.

    Regards,

    Martyn.

  15. 2251? Pretty obscure - a GNSR class S 4-4-0 bears no resemblance to the brilliant model that Heather is building for me. The LNER classified them D41 and they were all gone by 1953.

If, on the other hand you were referring to one of those Swindon things...

    Chaz

Oops, sorry for the hijack Chaz. I forgot that we don't talk about locos from the lower shires.

Please except my apologies, I was in a world of my own, as usual : )

    Martyn.

  16. The 2251 is currently away having some important electronics fitted. I aim to complete that build in the new year. =o)

    Morning Heather,

Ah it's good to hear it has not been put back on the " to do shelf ". I have one of the JLTRT kits that has been in the cupboard for quite a while now, so I'm just hovering around in the back ground pick up any tips along the way.

What are the odds that once I start my build, one of the rtr companies will bring one out. I wonder if the wheelbase of the loco is the same as a pannier, Mr Minerva. : )

I would think they would be a good seller.

    Martyn.
