Who would have thought a derailment would help us arrive home two hours early...

Reminds me of 20 years ago - when track works being cancelled, when I was on a train due to be diverted, ended up costing me money!
I've lived in Cwmbran (in S Wales, a few miles from the GW main line). At the time, I was commuting daily to Oxford - so the usual routes with my season ticket involved changing at Didcot (Newport - Bristol Parkway / Bristol Temple Meads / Gloucester - Swindon - Didcot) (Hereford - Worcester was an alternative, but took an hour or two longer).
Track works were planned around Swindon - so train booked to go via "Berks and Hants" - during diversions like this, season ticket validity would be extended to allow travel via Reading - so, if I wanted to visit London, I'd only need to buy a ticket from Reading, instead of all the way from Didcot.
Track works being cancelled meant a slight change of plans / fare ... !
