  1. As an after-thought, is the old Hornby model anywhere near accurate, it don't look it!!??
  2. Naa, sell the Hornby one on to a collector, and just treat yerself to a Bachmann one instead - lovely loco.
  3. I grew up in the Ongar area of Essex in the 50's/and 60's. When I visited paternal relatives, and friends in the Chelmsford and Maldon areas it was mostly by bus, Eastern National services 31 and 32, always Bristol Low-Deckers, remember it well.
  4. Nice pic Rob, but doesn't pristine finish show up the mistakes. That steam cock on the smokebox front (door ring ?) of Rood Ashton Hall is over scale, it could do with blackening to make it less obvious, the one on Ketley Hall is more like it.
  5. Ended up repairing them, cleaned the gears up, degreased, and super glued together after making sure they were in the right position, then using a bit of 'micro-engineering' (?), with small washers, drilling, and tapping thro' with very small machine screws (3 x equi-spaced csk 16BA), must've worked, the locos run perfectly.
  6. Err yes, I should know as I live in Winterborne Kingston, but I did put Dorchester/Weymouth, not Dorchester-Weymouth, or anything north, west, east or south. And my wife jokingly accuses ME of having an attention problem ????
  7. 3 or 4 years ago Hornby released the re-tooled Hall, Helmingham Hall, ( exGW Hall not B17), I thought the £57 Hattons were asking was a good deal, so much I had a second one.
  8. I dunno!! Over the years ( well between about 1996 and 2005) spent time converting a dozen Airfix/Dapol 4F's to loco-drive with Comet (now Wizard) chassis kits, and then Bachmann go and do it. But given the body is plastic, and the 'play' in the chassis, I can over-look the minor splasher problem.
  9. All those with the name 'puddle' were 'piddle' but were changed because of Victorian prudish attitude over piddle being slang for piss. Those being near the main Dorchester/Weymouth 'highway' being the biggest candidates for change.
  10. Yeah? But which one, to me the narrow-cab Greyhound looks much better.
  11. It's amusing to read about two areas of England that are close to my heart, central Essex (near to the river Roding) where I spent my childhood, and central Dorset ( the Winterborne Valley) where I now live. But I will throw in another two names, one from near each area, central Essex - Shellow Bowells, and central Dorset - Tincleton. edit, Oh apologies to 'Gwiwer', there is no 'u' in the spelling of the central Dorset Winterborne. - from this resident of Winterborne Kingston ( and former resident of Fyfield in Essex).
  12. After checking, it seems we both got it wrong, and my wife normally jokes about me having an attention disorder. http://www.ancientpages.com/2016/04/11/battle-of-assandun-one-of-the-great-battles-in-english-history/
  13. The mixed traffic lining of grey/cream/black/red was introduced in 1948. Ivatt 4MT's lost their double chimneys 1953-6, only the first 3 (3000 - 2 ) had LMS livery, 43003 - 20 had BRITISH RAILWAYS in 8inch figures, 43021 - 35 in 6 inch, from then on it was the early emblem, but as locos went thro' shops after June 1949 they probably had the early emblem attached, so most would've been done by '53..
  14. Not to be confused with Assundun in Essex, the site of the battle between the armies of Edmund Ironside, King of England, and Canute The Great, who wanted to be king ( and won) in 1016.
  15. In other words it was cheaper, and quicker to put straight panniers tanks on a loco, than fabricate a saddle-tank around the awkward shape of Belpaire firebox, and tapered boiler?? edit, I thought I'd add, regards water 'sloshing' in side tanks, didn't most tank engines have 'anti-surge' plates?? (Except the 'Rivers'!!!!)
  16. Now ya know why they try to link Cadbury Castle with King Arthur, they got it all wrong with Tintagel!!!
  17. The exGWR 47 class was a severely route restricted class of locomotives. One way most preserved locos are funded for future overhauls is hiring out to heritage lines other than their 'home' line. When I mentioned this to one of those involved in the new build of 4709, he admitted it is a problem which they accept, and are trying to find a way round it, good luck to them. I've always liked the class, and can remember seeing most of them at Old Oak many years ago, but they were the civil engineers worst nightmare.
  18. Out do ya all, 2 miles from here is Shitterton. Mind you, there's also 'Ryme Intrinseca' not too far away to keep yer thinkin'.
  19. Didn't Bachmann try out Buhler motors for a short while in it's early days of British OO outline??
  20. I still have one of their bright orange plastic bags with 'The Model Railway Manufacturing Co' Kings X on one side and 'Eames' of Reading on the other.
  21. Legin, I must say I do admire your determination to carry on with the somewhat crude Lima model. I had one when they first came out, and had to resort to a few alterations including fixing the outer plastic chassis frame to the inner Mazak weight to stop it binding. And - oh those pizza-cutter driving wheels. All I can say is thank heavens for the Bachmann version, I have 5, and oh, although I've added tender pick-ups - what a superb model.
  22. Indeed, Geoff sold up in the late 80's, or early 90's, and retired to Swanage, the shop was sold on to a bloke called Phil ( can't remember the surname?), who was, in his own words, put out of business by a toy shop called Setchfields that was located across the road. I saw Geoff a few times in Swanage ( I was a volunteer on the Swanage Railway) not long after he retired, but haven't seen him since. I don't think Dudley Dimmock lasted long in Charminster Road - there one day, gone the next.
  23. Agree with above, but if I have trouble with vulnerable 'steps', on plastic rtr, or wm kits, I replace with etched-brass Wizard/Comet ones.
  24. The day of the small model shop has come to the end, if you can afford the massive initial outlay, the only way to succeed is the 'internet-superstore'. RIP the friendly little shop where you could go for a chat, and if lucky - get a cup of coffee.
  25. Most noticeable when a loco is coasting, as you say a 'psst' noise or a 'tic' ( as on exGW larger locos), it's a snifting ( anti-vacuum) valve for the cylinders.
