I used to use Halfrauds plastic primer but when the local store closed I switched to Hycote grey plastic primer from Amazon (cheaper and larger 400ml can) however I have been experimenting with Stynylrez Airbrush Primer

Thought I'd written a response to this, I remember looking that up after you posted. I suspect it will be similar to the Valejjo one, sounds it from the description.

Yes, they are all from the Shire scenes range. Although number three has been cut up and rebuilt for a different pose.

Interestingly Ricciardo also hit Piastri in the same incident, damaging his diffuser - before Stroll hit him.

Whereabouts on this does he hit Piastri before Stroll ploughed in to him?

  4. Only just caught up with the Japan race last night. I found out the C5 are now only keeping the catch up program on for 7 days, so I missed out on the quali program. It's nice to see the only time they focus on the RBS is at the very beginning and very end. At least we can get to see what's happening mid pack. I love Suzaka, one of my favourite tracks (driving it in F1 games is fantastic) but watching it this time round didn't seem to have the oomph that it used to have.

That's the price per bogie.  Not per pair.

I blagged four of the Fishbelly type for my B-set project as soon as I was aware that they were available.
They are very nice and great vale for the money IMHO.  Arrived in the post PDQ too. :-)

I didn't know I needed any Fishbelly bogies, so imagine my surprise when a pair fell in to my basket along with a couple of pairs of American bogies. Now I need to start combing the books to see what I can put them under!

They could do with producing a few (hundred) extra of those American bogies, I'm sure they would sell out.

    Bogies...
As spotted by Robin above, the distinctive 9 foot wheelbase bogies either 'Fish belly' or 'Equalising beam' as fitted to our GWR Steam Railmotors (Diagram O and R respectively) are also suitable for use with other GWR coach types, we have therefore made these available as RTR complete spare parts with wheels, brake rigging and electrical pick ups, suitable for kit builders etc.

As someone who pushed for this 5 years ago, I had better put my money where my mouth is! Well done Kernow, hopefully a good decision for you, it certainly is for those of use who can find a use for them on other projects.

Much appreciated Rob. I won't lie it can be a bit fiddly and I do have sausage fingers but I got into the groove with it and was fitting a bar every  3 or 4 minutes. When I do the other side I will take some more images showing the actual process, better than explaining sometimes,  an image paints a thousand words. For information the brass 0.2 rod is by Albion Alloys available from numerous model shops at about £5.50 for 10 x 300mm lengths.

I've found Nairnshire Modelling Supplies to be good for brass rod. They do more than currently listed on their ebay shop as I've had 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7mm off them. They only showing down to 0.3mm at the moment so not sure if they do 0.2mm, might be worth asking. The proprietor has always been good in communications I've had with him.

I thought GWR windows on roofs were called Clerestory, not Velux  . . . . 🤔😬

ChuffinCC7-1.jpg.5a5c166223f8687e3bcf1985ba9db7d3.jpgIt depends on the stock. These little loft extensions have velux windows 😆

  9. To answer the other bit in your post, if you want some grey wagons, you should be looking at some unfitted Minks or vans from other constituents. If you like kits, there are plenty of LMS, LNER and the odd Southern one from Ratio/Parkside and Cambrian.

Not an Ebay thing, and face-to-face is not an option due to the distance between parties.  I had this vague idea that you could go into a post office, hand over cash, and it would magically get to the seller?   In these particular circumstances (only!) I'm happy to take the risk of the seller getting my cash but not dispatching the goods.  Cash payment is my idea, not the seller's.  It's to do with the maintenance of domestic harmony ...

However much the Nigerian Prince/Foreign Minister/ Treasury officer is offering, I'll double it, just send me the cash instead.

What white primer did you use? I have found that the coverage of Precision paint is rather dependent on the primer - not that I've found a good white primer for this; Halfords grey plastic primer and red primer are OK but I've not been so satisfied using Acid 8 etch primer, which is a light grey. In other words, I think the issue may be paint chemistry rather than colour.

I used the PP white enamel primer as specced on their site. I used to religiously use Halfords rattle cans but they are not very cost effective and quite wasteful. Coverage of enamel top coats on them was always good. Once my current stock is gone, no more will be bought. This is also one of the reasons for having a play with the Vallejo acrylic primers.

You will find that you need fewer coats of the chocolate brown paint over the top of a dark undercoat as regardless of the type of paint, dark browns don't cover particularly well.

Yeah, when I was doing a couple of LMS vans in LMS bauxite, I followed the Phoenix Precision advice to use white undercoat (their site suggests all their paint is formulated for a white undercoat (or I've misread it)).  Never again! Coverage was a nightmare, it took about 3 sessions to get something passing muster.

    Signwriter having a bad day?!

    1000edit.jpg.281fe47d549a2645ae9e2242a8437b52.jpg

Three Old Silkstone wagons on the quayside in Barrow almost certainly about to discharge loads of bunker coal into the SS Lachawana.  But have a look at the middle wagon.  As well as the rather glaring typo (did they not have spellcheck?!) the word "STEAM" has been rather too spread out, forcing "COAL" to be crammed in.   Not the signwriter's finest hour...

Note that they have very closely spaced numbers, 1807, 1810 and 1817, which strongly suggests that they are brand new, having been delivered new to one of the three collieries run by the company near Barnsley, and are on their first trip out with a load.  The photo is likely to be about 1910, from logs of the shipping in Barrow Docks.

Also - given interest in this upthread, note all three wagons have white rims on their wheels...

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to the number of planks?  I think they are 7 pl with end doors (on the far end of each as we view them) but would welcome thoughts.

Maybe the middle one was done by an apprentice. As well as poor letter spacing on most of the words and a missing letter, the letter styles differ in several places. Actually, on closer inspection, I think all 3 were lettered by different people.

Yes, absolutely, the black is just undercoat. I have some Precision "GWR Freight Van Brown" to go over the top of it.

Actually, I should correct that - the black is the first undercoat. That was left a week to dry properly, then a second undercoat went on, this time red oxide from the ubiquitous Halfords rattle can, sprayed lightly with a slight downward angle. This has left the crevice's in the woodwork looking darker. Whether this will show up as a shading effect after the dark brown top coat, who knows. I had also done a test with on and old scrapper wagon, putting the freight brown directly on the black Vallejo primer. Whilst the black primer worked great as a base for the GWR freight grey on the CC7, I wasn't overly pleased with the result of the brown over it, hence opting for the red oxide as a better base colour.

The roof has also had a mist of dirt sprayed on it. It won't get weathered too much as these were built starting in 1939, right at the tail end of my timeframe.

Meanwhile, in the world of plastic...

My first D299 from the Slaters kit. I'm glad Compound has his D299 Appreciation thread as there were some useful tips in there, however as I read them after gluing the floor in the body and finding the solebars were too deep i had to resort to sanding them down instead of the simpler method of gluing the floor slighter higher up inside the body.

Bob Essery's "LMS Wagons" has a pic of one in LMS livery in the late 30's, fits my time period nicely, so the door spring and rubbing strip were added and the makers plate moved over to the correct side is from a Mainly trains etch.

I doubt I'll be buying any more (I have 3 plus another D305) as I found the plastic used is terrible, very brittle. Both brake levers snapped when carefully cutting off the sprue, hence the choice to model a single sided brake (as seen in Essery's book). You can also see on the right hand W iron that the plastic has gone white where is almost snapped off. Not impressed.

3 years after posting this, a bit more progress was made on the D299! There was some talk of Vallejo primers in another thread (I think Neal's Henley on Thames) and what colours they came in. Remembering I had some in Dunkelgelb (German dark yellow for a Panther tank kit I have) I thought it might make a good experiment to use for a heavily weathered wagon. For my late 1930's era, what better than to use an old Midland wagon for this. For anyone wonder what colour Dunkelgelb is, this is Vallejo's take:
