  1. After a meeting on Monday of some of the Ops Team, I have decided to abandon the gradients and go for Gilbert's train cassette idea!! So today, the FY boards have been taken down and we are now back on the level. Just need to re do the board alignment dowels on one joint and raise the legs by 25mm. Of course the approach point-work will all need re designing so back to good old Templot - but not whilst the sun is shining, beer time!!

    Sounds like the sensible option.

  2. The problem would be the same if I had the two level fiddle yard, at least with cassettes I could move them. The length would be about 4ft, trains being split and stored in two halves.

Some positive news, the class 40 has had its springs adjusted and now performs as well as the other diesels taking 11 to the upper level.

But you still can't get steam up there ?

If the cassettes are only 4ft long then that may be the way to go.

  3. Totally agree with that, I don't want to do anything at this stage that may cause problems or restrictions later!

"The cassette idea would work but where to put them is the problem."

    The redundant upper yard area!!

Would that cause restrictions in viewing & dealing with stock in the main yard underneath ?

If you had a derailment or problem you would have to take the cassettes off & the cassettes would need to be pretty long to be of any real use in the first place.

  4. Hi John.

I've followed this thread with great interest after your last effort with Bradfield Gloucester Square which looked fantastic.

I’m not surprised that the gradients proved too much but you probably guessed that anyway.

I can see why you would want an upper & lower storage yard.

Eliminate or modify the gradients if possible. Having them on a curve doesn’t help but again I can see the need why.

I suppose you could shorten the upper yard thereby reducing the gradient. Anything else like adding weight or using stock of a lighter nature will only be a stop gap. Maybe fine for a home based layout but for anything on exhibition would surely be just trouble waiting to happen. The cassette idea would work but where to put them is the problem.

You could go with only one storage yard on the flat which would enable you to start the approach pointwork earlier & thus increasing the yard length.

I look forward to seeing what you decide & good luck with your project. I can only admire your skill level. :good:

  5. In that case I'm tempted to see how much I could get for this......

Edit to point out that it is mint, kit built, professionally weathered, test run and has never been taken out of it's box.

Sorry but the green ends are just plain wrong

I wonder where they get their prices from.

I wonder if he's related to our other friend from Cartmel ?

    £25 tops.

  6. Oh now that takes some beating, even for Gostude himself.

All I can do with him is smile. :)

He must have a jockeys neck charging those prices.

  7. I don't want to take this thread too far OT but that does remind me of an occasion at Arlington Texas (between Fort Worth and Dallas).  I went to a couple of race meetings there with the Head of Household and one time after prolonged rain on the (alleged) all-weather course, the official going was 'Sloppy' - I jest not!

To late for that I'm afraid.

This thread went OT long ago

  8. Something strange has gone on here - the 12-wheel Pullman add-on set has appeared on a few occasions on e-bay but usually gone for well under half this price (£313.50). Does the fact that this is a first offering by the vendor and that the auction was 'private listing - bidders' identities protected' have anything to do with it?

    What's that smell? A rat?

    JE

I'm always wary of private listings.

Back in the day when you could see the bidders names maybe there was a need for it on occasion but not now.

You can't know anymore who the bidders are so I see no need for private listings any more.

When something reaches a price far ahead of the items actual worth then I get a keen sense of smell. :nono:

  9. Hi

Thanks for the instructions. The plastic piping under the loco doesn't want to move on mine. I've just sent a complaint to the editor of the magazine about the poor choice of loco for the free offer

It's really an appalling model to introduce folk to fitting chips. I can imagine it putting some off for life

    Terrific

this hobby needs to gain more followers, not have them put off

Some locos can be pigs to get into.

It was a good learning experience for you & it was nice to get a free gift as an incentive to subscribe.

I wish that the magazines would do something for those of us outside the UK ?

  10. Hardly a valid point is it Tony, that is part of the distribution chain between manufacture and buyer. They haven't removed it from the box and sprayed dirt coloured paint over it have they?

You're right Steve but you knew I was only joking hence the smiley.

I have stuff here that I bought & never took it out of the box.

Its brand new but some people would consider it used because it was owned by someone before it got to them even though as I said it was never out of its box.

Technically its second hand I suppose.

If I was selling such items I would describe them as mint & never out of the box.

I'm sure we've all bought stuff in shops that may have been out of the box a few times & we never knew.

Buying from a distance as I have to I have often asked the shop if they would unpack it & test it for me before shipping, just in case there's a problem.

  11. But then it is not new is it?  New is as it left the factory.

If that was the case then no one would ever buy anything new.

It left the factory, went to the distributors & then on to the shop.

Crikey that thing is ancient, well 3rd hand at best

  12. I quote;

"Interior detail and paneling is to an 'Over the Top' standard."

    How insulting.

    Mike

Not as over the top as his pricing.

Superb models but not at that price :O

  13. Perhaps having been badly affected by recent flooding, the thought has crossed the mind "how do I sell by flood damaged model railway?" - Ah I know, call it "professionally weathered", that seems to be de rigueur for such sales these days. Rather than @@RARE@@.

What could be more authentic "Professionally weathered by nature"

You can't get better than that

  14. I have bought a few.

You do have to remember to take the postal charge into account. £20 + £1 P&P is no more expensive than £13 + £8 P&P (in fact I would say it is cheaper, given the reputation and I cannot get over feeling that I am being overcharged for £8 P&P - especially if it then arrives badly packed and second class posted)

I know what folk are doing when they elevate the P&P, just evading ebay charges. But it always makes me suspect of their motives. Whereas Free/Nominal P&P always makes me feel the opposite. Possibly irrational?

That's very good thinking on the sellers part as I have never seen any item from this seller going for what I would describe as a bargain price.

In fact on a lot of occasions their items go for prices which more that make up for the cheaper postage.

As to postage costs elsewhere, some of the postage quotes are off the wall.

I know that some sellers bump up the postage to avoid fees but some sellers have no idea.

  15. Ah, but just look at the P&P charges, at least you don't get ripped off there. Most items have a low start price as well. Also they have a pretty good reputation for describing the items as they actually are. I think they are seen as the Hattons of the ebay world.

Yes but I have yet to see anything from that seller go for less than you might get it elsewhere.

Is it all down to reputation ?

  16. I've dealt with him a couple of times Ian. An A1 bloke when there was a problem (not of his making)

I've also dealt with him on several occasions. Really excellent seller.

I wish there were more like him.

  17. Anyone who has seen eBay at the moment will know 'tis the season to be Gostude (as opposed to jolly)!

Does anyone know when his sale is due to start?

2nd Tuesday of next week :sungum:

  18. I hope the economy of Cartmel and the surrounds is benefitting from this trader..........................

(However, having ridden a bike through Cartmel last year, I'm not quite certain)

    Cheers,

    Mick

Did you get caught for a toll as everything in that area seems quite expensive :sungum:
