I dont think the Lighting is  designed to turn off . As already said I tried a Rapido Wand which done nothing. Lights simply work with the motor running only.

I am liasing with NIU Models to see if it is viable for a 3D exhaust/radiator system to be printed for the LNER version.

Has anyone got a photo of the nearside/other side  of the LNER Version. Were there additional Radiators on that side of the vehicle as well ??.

I presume the loco lamps don't light ?

I'm not aware of any interior photos. I would generally agree with Rails' response above, I've found it tricky to get good frames, though I admit I am not a professional model photographer.  However, given all the interior detail, especially in the engine room, I think I would have made a particular effort to take or have taken some frames for publicity purposes.

Re waiting for reviews, at the risk of sounding like I'm on Rails' payroll and giving folk the 'hard sell', I wouldn't advise waiting for reviews before placing an order. The email notification Phil [JW] mentions also said 3170 in NER livery has now sold out - there's 3171 in NER and 3170 in LNER still available at the moment.

    I suppose that's a chance I'll have to take.

If I miss out then so be it.

We seem to have gone from manufacturers bringing models to market that modellers may want to buy to this pre-order frenzy where modellers are expected to order often years in advance of a model being produced because of the fear of losing out.

If you are asking someone to pay out £200 for a model then I think its only fair to provide them with proper photographs of its interior, especially when the interior will be highly visible because of the amount of windows in the model.

  3. Are there any photographs of the interior of the model available ?

EDIT: I asked Rails if photographs of the model interior were available & this was the reply.

    Hi Tony

It is really difficult to photograph the interior of models so they are generally just taken of the exterior.

    Kind regards.

So we'll just have to wait until someone does a review on the model.

Doesn't exactly look like much contact for the blade connector.

I have used them for years under my layout without any failures.

The important thing is to use the right size connector for the wire being used & to use the correct tools for the job.

These can also be used especially for above baseboard connections.

I have not had the problem you have, but I don’t use the point motor switching I have installed frog juicers I found them more reliable than switches! I wonder if your problem stems from the diamond crossing between the two points, we had a lot of problems at our club with a similar layout and I think it was solved with a 6 pole rotary switch to change all the frog polarities at the same time manually. Just a thought?

     Regards Mike

Never had a problem with the diamond crossings but thanks for the suggestion.

Give DCC Concepts a call. They are much better at supporting and troubleshooting their products than people here ;)

I contacted DCC Concepts & they sorted the problem for me.

It seems that trying to control the switches on two Ip Digital point motors was causing crosstalk between the two.

They provided a diagram which used the SP2 switch on one point motor to control the second point motor as a slave.

That worked fine with a single push button.

Push it once to move the points to curve & push it again the switch them back to straight again.

  6. Hi Everyone.

I fitted two IP Digital point motors as part of a crossover junction.
Given the same DCC address they work fine but my problem is with using the inbuilt switches on a local control panel to switch both point motors together.

I ran wiring from both point motor build in switches back to a double throw momentary switch on the panel.
It will switch both motors fine but then after 20 or 30 seconds the points motors will switch direction randomly.
Sometimes one motor will switch direction & on other occasions both motors will switch.

I tried inserting diodes as per a diagram posted but it made no difference.

I also tried giving the point motors different DCC addresses but no go.
Disconnecting the switch & the motors behave normally with my NCE Power Pro system.
If I connect just one point motor with the switch the point motors behave normally but not with the switch wiring from the two motors connected ?

I installed the second set of motors with the same result.
They operate properly with my Dcc unit & one point can be changed with a switch but not the two together.

    Any ideas guys ?

    Cheers.
    Tony.

Picture of the junction enclosed below.
I have marked the two points concerned.

  7. I think its hard to find reviews which don't carry a bias of some sort.

I prefer to call it honesty.

Reading some reviews its clear to see who's paying the bill ;)

On the subject of price increases.

I think if the price of every day items had gone up similar to model railway items then a lot of us would find ourselves in the workhouse. A certain level of price increase is expected & accepted but increases like we see in model railway items will do nothing but decrease the interest in the hobby & put manufacturers out of business.

Looking at some of the prices mentioned in Hornby's 2022 range just made me think ?

In your dreams Simon, in your dreams.

Does Rails inspect its products before sending them out?

When I bought models from Hobbytime of West Wickham in the 1970s the manager always used to run locomotives on his test track before selling them to make sure there were no faults.

I just got a loco from Rails & there was a sticker attached "TESTED MM" so somebody had a go.

Maybe it was because the order was for outside the UK ?

Yorkshire Santa flew by last night… Delighted to have received this absolute beauty! A few snaps on the rolling road, in the darker Prussian blue.

A quick advice query though: when I started running in, the motion seems quite ‘jittery’ and noisy, in a way I’ve not noticed with new locos previously (I was hoping to attach a video clip to illustrate, but can’t work out how to do so on here?) - almost as if somethings not ‘tight’ in the chassis assembly. I don’t think this is a general issue with the production, likely just a 1 off.

An hour of running in both ways and light oil on the rods doesn’t seem to have settled it… before I cross the bridge of sending back for checking etc, does anyone recognise this or could suggest a simple cause / potential fix? I’m happy to perch on the phone to Rails and run the gauntlet of Christmas postage if needs be… but I’d much rather get it running on the garden railway if it’s just a a case of turning a screw or two! Thanks in advance for any tips ;-)

Mine is a first issue - certainly not a disaster.

    That's great John.

You were one of the lucky ones.

The problems were written about extensively.

When this model was announced, I ordered one straight away.

It's release was accompanied by horror stories of burned-out motors; (which I suspected at the time were the result of distorted valve gear, due to heavy handling).

Nonetheless, I purchased a couple of the spare motors which were mentioned here - just in case!

Now that my 'magnum opus' roundy-roundy is operational, I can finally assess the capabilities of this model.

Suffice to say that it didn't even blink at a load of eighteen Mk.1 coaches - it was clearly capable of far greater things!

No slipping; no escaping 'magic smoke'; just a steady pull away and acceleration to a very creditable running speed, that would have taxed the prototype.

My conclusion is that the Heljan Garratt, given careful handling, is a superb model which ill-deserves its past dubious reputation.

.... and its box still contains the two unused spare motors - just in case!

    John Isherwood.

The first issue of the Garratts were a disaster with multiple problems. I had three myself, all of which had to be returned. Some had a far bigger number of them.

The second issue was a much improved model.

I received my as-built Caley blue model today. I haven't run it yet but, on first inspection, I have to say I am generally pleased in spite of my initial reservations. Yes, the tender copings are over-scale but it is not obvious in the flesh, especially as the tender bulkheads are relatively thin. The livery is beautifully applied and the satin finish is perfect. The only thing I will address is to replace the oversized plastic cab stanchions with nickel silver wire, everything else I can live with. I may commission some etched brass cab-side number plates - the printed ones are accurate but don't look right because they are flush. I am at a loss to understand why the Improved Precedent will come with them, but this one doesn't.

Those stanchions really look horrendous but I have a photo taken in preservation which shows  them that thickness from the door level down.

Maybe that's where the idea came from ?

I don't know who took the photo so I don't want to put it up here without permission.
