  1. Has anyone tried the magnetic couplings as in the new BRM DVD? They are unobtrusive, and I like the idea but it seems to me that the magnets are too strong so

    1)  difficult to uncouple

    2)  when a loco approaches a wagon on a siding the wagon will push away due to the magnets unless it is being held.

I have to say I thought the review could have been much better.

  2. Having started this thread some 4+ years ago I thought that I would add a couple of photos showing how I fit a loop to my locos to enable them to couple up to my Bachmann fitted T/L wagons/coaches. The process is very simple (well it has to be for me to cope with) and consists of drilling two small holes in the body of (in this case a Heljan diesel) and bending a piece of 1mm brass rod to form the loop and then pushing them into the holes. Once adjusted to my coupler height gauge they are secured with a drop of superglue. Hope this is useful.

    From the underside.

    And from the front.

When this is painted matt black it is barely visible.

So looking at this it appears that when you push, you are using the loops rather than the buffers? Don't the loops tend to ride over each other?

  3. If we are getting pernickety about fish plates, does that mean we are cutting track into scale 60' (or what ever) lengths, or is everyone else doing this already? If so, do you bend it first and then cut it or vice versa? I have always had trouble with joints on curves with flexi to the extent that I tend to use settrack now. It is typical that Peco bring this out now, just after I have started dabbling in 0 gauge to get bullhead rail!

  4. These sums of £5000+ are not going materialise from a magic money tree. They will come from the existing education budget. Taking those who are likely to score highly in exams will lower the average in the core school population leading to greater denigration of the state system. A bit like the creeping privatisation of the health services.

I so nearly just ticked Agree Tony. Problem is the number of times recently I have heard of the brighter kids "helping" the less able ones. This may well raise the average, but I'm not at all sure it will help the helpers.

A friend of my parents was a scholarship boy at Bluecoats School. He was also a Barnado's boy, and told of the misery of his time at school due to bullying.

  5. The house number on our gate pier is carved into a block of solid slate in gilded numerals about 6 inches high (mind you he did seem to be of 'foreign' origin so might not be familiar with numerals in the Arabic style).

he could have been an Arab.

  6. My eyesight has taken a bit of a knock due to the illness I've been suffering from. I've been assured by the quacks that it should return to normal - so apologies for any iffy photos in the mean time...

Do not adjust your monitor (CRT or otherwise) - yes it's a silver Hurricane..

Why the holes in the wings?

  7. Andy, apply! You need to update your CV anyway. If you get called then go, sus out the job and be honest with them. Unless things have changed since I left teaching (which they may well have done) they will ask if you still wish to be considered for the job before they offer it, so keep your options open.

Remember, not long ago you were a bl66dy good teacher and you still are. It is obvious to me that you are not being given the time for the management responsibilities, and you seem to have had more than your fair share to deal with in a difficult time for teaching (when wasn't?).

I gather Dom has seen the news that Derby is to get trams. I wonder if he is suggesting a change of career! :jester:

  8. Morning all from red dragon land.

Started out sunny.  Cloudy now. No difference, mind - it is still cold!  Might venture out to the recycle bin....otherwise I'm staying near the fire.

Well, I hope it is more than my Dad's pools win of 17/6 (75p).

Hope you day is more profitable!

I'm sure someone will beat me to it, but 75p=15/-, so 17/6=87.5p? :scratchhead:

  9. Hello from a very frosty Somerset.

Birds are fed, but ice unbreakable with my trusty screwdriver. The ice seems to be about an inch thick

You need an awl. Now, where did I see one.......?

  10. Kevin, no-one has said it will be FUN! My first opposite-side drive was from UK to my wife's home in Sicily. We went in the old air-cooled VW bus (which had the steering wheel on the right) and I loved every minute of it. Traffic in Palermo is exciting.

I am a morning person, so generally we did most of our miles before lunch. We tried to avoid driving in the dark. I can't tell you how much I'd like to re-visit France especially but health issues prevent this at the moment.
