  1. There has been a recent change in the law and as we now have French and British assets we are currently updating our wills to allow all assets to be dealt with under English Law.

I suspect there will be further changes if and when UK leaves EU. I don't think that what is going to happen to ex-pats (either way)  is clear yet.

  2. I have received an e-mail from Model Rail magazine inviting me to join them at Warley for what I read as a goody bag and a pint. In fact it was a goody bag and a pin. I already have all the pins I need, do you think I could have a pint instead?

  3. Radio update is no change.

    Cotton bud to large.

Cotton bud trimmed and isopropyl placed on it.

    Still not fitting.

Isopropyl put onto headphone jack and pushed in and out rapidly.

    No change.

Isopropyl put onto thin wooden skewer and pushed in and out rapidly.

    No change.

Put radio back onto night table.

    Drank Isopropyl alcohol.

What I would do is to get an old headphone plug, stick it in the line-in socket and jiggle it as required.

  4. My son tells me that he gets 30 pence per mile (how much?) for using his car for work, and the company tell him that "the Government" will give him another 15 pence per mile. Apparently one of the conditions of employment was that he had a car insured for business use.

Does this sound reasonable? How does tis "Government" contribution work?''

  5.

Careful, THEY may be monitoring us!  :O

Stayed at home due to migraine which began in the tiny hours and was given doctor's orders to rest till Sunday. May just have to do with the couple of near-misses that occurred since last week. Well, if some bunglec*nts of motorists appear to enjoy pain so much, maybe I…but I suppose I'd better leave it at that.

Anyway, haven't eaten a lot yet, so maybe I should remedy that first.

    There, that's better

  6. Is the NEC as expensive as the Jaarbeurs (where Eurospoor is held)? A day ticket is 12 euro. Last time I went (2012) our (then) secretary reserved 4 free parking tickets for himself, even though he had a wedding anniversary that weekend and wouldn't attend at all. He did show up on Sunday though. As a result, I had to buy 4 daytickets, that's nearly 50 euro   To say I wasn't too pleased is an understatement   He since left the club, joined our sister club instead but I understood recently his doctors now give him 2 yrs max  :O

    Really inappropriate use of smileys.

  7. I`m hoping to have a cheering-up day out to the Warley M.R exhibition (which will also represent my first visit to the N.E.C) and so I`d like to ask for a little advice from any E.R`s whom have previously attended Warley.

Having some ongoing health issues, my breathing capacity and stamina for walking about is a little limited and I do have to use a oxygen nebuliser (self powered) at embarrassingly regular intervals.......and being keen not to make a fuss; I wonder if there are any quiet corners within the exhibition hall, where one might be able to sit and {as far as possible} not represent too much a public spectacle?.......Normally I retire to the car to do this when traveling, but I`ve been advised that the car parking at the NEC, might not be sufficiently close to hand, and not being the possessor of a "Blue Badge", I can`t use any of the more access-favourable parking areas.

Passepartout will be accompanying me on the day, to assist with practicalities; should we come upon another Aouda! :friends:

Please do say hello if you happen to see us on Saturday, although you probably can`t miss me; being 5` 14" :mosking: ..........I`m having to use a 'text to voice' App on my `phone to 'speak', and the App`s predictive-text feature often adds a frisson of situational levity and mirth to social meetings.......so please, go with the flow and laugh along with me.

Hi Debs. I too have walking and breathing difficulties. Specifically for exhibitions I bought a "rollator". It is a walker frame, but with 4 wheels Between the frame is a seat with a storage box underneath. I can walk up to a layout, turn the gadget around and have a ring-side seat! Got mine second-hand from the local mobility centre for £40.

    Enjoy the show

  8. I would've liked a bit more on the M2, its the sort of car that is an expensive indulgence but one which many regular people could aspire to own (if not new, then s/h).

I wasn't saying the piece shouldn't have been there, just that it was too late in a long show.

  9. Morning all. Another carp night with little sleep.

I like to listen to Radio 4 during the day whilst I potter. Pottering involves visiting many rooms in the house, so I like to have a radio on in each room. This used to be no problem and over the years I have acquired many wireless sets. My latest three have DAB which my son introduced me to (and up with which I will put!). These are out of phase with their forebears, such that I get 7 pips on the hour. On investigation I find that I have not only DAB and FM, but also LW. internet radio, TV radio courtesy of the virgins, TV radio by Freeview, mobile phone radio and possibly others.

NONE of the bl00dy things are in time with each other. My son seems to think I should invest in several Bluetooth speakers, but he doesn't really listen to the radio at all. This is progress?

And another thing. This computer uses Windows (10 I think) and something called Google Chrome which my son arranged because he thinks I will find it easier. My minii-pad uses iOS (I think) and my phone is a jelly-bean Android. All of these are very different from each other but, worse, it seems that nowadays the darn things decide at random intervals to turn themselves off and re-start with many things altered. Grrrr...

If you are still reading I don't want your sympathy, but should you wish to send money...... :stinker:

    Best wishes

  10. Getting Porsche, McLaren and Ferrari to let them do the hyper car comparison was a monumental scoop for episode one that got the series off on a high.

Of course this was the comparison that oldTG didn't get. I'm guessing that lots of people with lots of money will watch this show and this in effect an advert for them. Even if they can't buy these "halo" models then the likes of Steve Cropley in Autocar are saying that the cheaper McLaren model is brilliant. I'm sure my local Porsche etc dealer will have one I can look at, and I expect it will generate a large footfall.

I did enjoy the programme, especially the various TG jokes. Maybe if they are left out then the show will be shorter as Andy Y suggests. For me I'd had enough when the piece about the new track and the M2 came on. I believe the trick is to leave'em wanting more.

  11. A few questions from someone who hasn't seen one yet.

Is it a "wonderful model", or a very good one at a good price? Is it, say, as good as the Hornby 00 one? As I said, I haven't seen or touched one yet and I bought my Bachmann one before I saw the Hornby one.

Are the blue/black ones painted, or moulded in blue/black plastic?

Surely logically the cab interior light should if anything be on when stationary and off when in motion?

Finally, any news of when my pre-ordered green one (possibly with a black bonnet) will be arriving?

    Cheers

  12. I have drawn comparisons before in this thread with the Melbourne tramways which I am very familiar with as a former employee and general enthusiast.   And again I can suggest that there is little evidence to suggest that the transition from "heavy rail" style reserved track to street running through a sharp bend has caused any form of incident. yet

  13. Sadly we seem to have something of a culture, Amazon delivery for example, where safety/common sense comes a poor second to "productivity", for want of a better word.

Whether this was involved here I have no idea so will wait to see if there's a management aspect to this.

    Stu

Yes,but people (including me) buy stuff from Amazon knowing that they treat their non-employees like sh!t so we can save a few bob on stuff. Bit like our trains being made by low-paid people in China. And we wonder why we've got no industry left.

I'm all right Jack, pull up the ladder.

  14. People have asked why passengers didn't get the driver's attention. Am I correct in thinking that the driver sits behind glass in his/her own cubicle? In any case, this is stiff-upper lip Britain where we don't like to make a fuss. Seriously.

Secondly, why does this system have drivers at all? It was built well after the driverless DLR and some LUL lines where the driver is apparently only there to "reassure" the passengers.

  15. .... and now I am returned and am slowly defrosting.  Höchstädt now has a lighting rig for the fiddle yard.

I am increasingly pissed off with Cobalt point motors.  There are five on Höchstädt and I decided to check them out.  Three didn't work: two needed the wires pushed in and the third needed a mechanical adjustment.  There will be a discussion with Newbryford at Warley .....

I need to be convinced they are suitable for an exhibition layout; the trouble is, what alternatives are there?

More weeds to be planted this evening.

    Bill

I've not used them myself, but I'm impressed with Tortoise motors on show layouts.

  16. As a retired IoM Government employee, I am contractually not allowed to comment on what a bunch of useless cockwombles they were. We've just elected a new lot, let's hope they are better.  One is, he's our GP and a good man.  Most of the rest I am contractually............

Problem is that being a "good man" doesn't necessarily make you a good politician. We've had several, but the one I am thinking of is a party leader, popular with party members but not with his MP's. Any guesses as to who I am talking about?
