  1. A very useful topic, thanks Mike. Always good to hear of sources for quality tools, even if I don't always treat them properly. I recently drilled a Slater's 7mm driving wheel axle to insulate it. I didn't file a good enough flat to begin with and the drill started at a slight angle. By the time it came out of the other side it had bent like a banana, but interestingly didn't break! By the way David, what does a slot drill do? Or does it do what it says it does? Cheers Simon
  2. Thanks Mark, I hope you enjoy your holiday and the book! It could be that having started scratch-building in 7mm that I can't resist trying to put as much detail as possible into the 2mm stuff as well? Both can be just as fiddly! Cheers Simon
  3. Nearly completed J27 as promised. Lagging slightly behind the real one...it'll catch up shortly! Next up; 7mm scratch-built BR Tilbury Tank. Here are the machined spacers, I'm very keen on live chassis at the moment... Cheers Simon
  4. Excellent news! Will you have a selection of etches at Aylesbury? Cheers Simon
  5. Absolutely beautiful Single Warren! What paints do you use for the main colour and the lining? Cheers Simon
  6. That's done then. Next up, finishing off a Bradwell J27... Cheers Simon
  7. Absolutely stunning work! And thanks for the information on weathering powders. While waiting for my Abteiling 502 (nee MIG) products to arrive I discovered that very fine real coal dust stands in well for "Black Smoke"! Cheers Simon
  8. Superb stuff, thanks for posting! Now to find somewhere in UK that supplies MIG powders... Cheers Simon
  9. Nearly done painting the Spinner body; just sorting out the chassis, so here are some sand boxes and brake gear... Cheers Simon
  10. Hi Rich; I'd be very interested in following your thread! Cheers Simon
  11. Thankyou. Here's the next hour's work. We find it does your head in after that! I'm checking clearances for wheels, both N gauge and 2mm and also that the splashers still have the correct curve as they're rather beautiful. Cheers Simon
  12. Hi Jerry, we've made a start on the 1400 etch. I'm going to try drawing without first scratch-building an example which I did for the Spinner and see what happens! Here we're checking the wheel clearances in the footplate, which is where I like to start. Somewhere or other on my postings are some pictures of a 4mm tender that I scratch-built for an MSWJR Galloping Alice, so I do have a bit of previous with outside sprung tenders. I'll have a think... Cheers Simon
  13. Some of my non-railway friends, (some of my best friends are non-railway friends) have admired my Spinner on FaceBook and were interested in its actual size. The nearest equvalent I could come up with was a pork chipolata. It's now known as the Chipolata Express... Cheers Simon
  14. Hi Nig. H, an array of Johnson tenders would be very useful. I'm looking at producing an etch for a Johnson class 1400 2-4-0 and they appeared to have had a selection of 2950 and 3250 tenders...so I might do the 2950! Cheers Simon
  15. Thanks for your kind comments everyone. And Nig H., the tender is a 3500 which was apparently almost identical to the 3250; both of which were designed by Johnson with enough forthought to fit a Terrier chassis. Excellent man! Cheers Simon
  16. It's about time for an update! I've recently finished the test-build of 2mm/N gauge Spinner etch Mk1...powered by a Dapol terrier drive in the tender with wheels adapted from various other Dapol locos. Nick Tilson at NBrass kindly worked my various fiddly masters into castings for the single driver axleboxes, smokebox door and various tender fittings. The other fittings are from his extensive range. This build has provided the basis for etch Mk2, I love 2D CAD! Cheers Simon
  17. Hi David, that's a very fine model. I'm trying to find some 4mm plates for "Private E Sykes VC". Where didi you find those on your loco?
  18. Excellent stuff Hawk, very interesting and very clever!! Cheers Simon
  19. Fantastic food for thought! Thankyou everybody. Cheers Simon
  20. Thanks very much Castle and Miss P. It usually seems that things end up as a compromise; if piston length didn't matter would you get more power by having the crankpins near the rims? (I don't think I've worded that very well!). Cheers Simon
  21. Hi there; Just a thought; why are the crankpins on a steam locomotive's wheels in the position that thy generally are, about half-way between the axle and the rim? I can understand that it would be rubbish for the rods to try to act on the axle centre but why not nearer the rims? Cheers Simon
  22. Hi, the Golden Arrow G16 resin kit recommends a Hornby China 8F donor chassis. Can anyone tell me how I can identify a Hornby China 8F? Cheers Simon
  23. Hi Steve, the Railcar book is very good and those etches look great...I'm going to have to order a set! Cheers Simon
  24. Hi Steve, I'm looking forward to following your build, I'm interested in one of these myself. Is it a new etch? I have heard that there may have been some dimensional inaccuracies on the old etch so you might want to check against a drawing? There are some excellent photos, information and a drawing of the loco in "Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Locomotives" by Barry Lane and a drawing of the whole vehicle in "British Railcars" by David Jenkinson and Barry Lane. Cheers Simon
  25. Hi Larry, the finish on that coach is lovely! Have you resprayed any more Maunsells and what paints did you use? Cheers Simon
