Looking at some other blogs I noted that people are unaware of some add on items from Judith Edge Kits - in particular some bits to improve the humble Airfix/Mainline/Dapol 21T hopper.

I have two ready for weathering.. well one is part weathered so here we go:

you get an etch with the handrail stanchions and the door operation levers.

Carve off the plastic handrails and then add the etched bits with some brass wire!
I'll finish the weathering and put that up in the blog

    enjoy!

Been a while since an update but...

I have a few BR Standards. The Bachmann one

replaced an Airfix on which had a new chassis and running gear fitted. This one can pull most things but does anyone have a way of filling in the screw hole in the connecting rods other than modelling putty?

And another Bachmann loco - an ex LMS 2MT Mogul..

Just starting to re-work some of my weathered stock as well as finally photographing some weathered stock

First up a Millhome B5 built by late father

this will be reworked this week.

Next a Hornby Stanier 2-6-4T - about to be re-wheeled with Alan Gibson wheels

and finally a Chivers LNER Pigeon brake - somewhere I have a D&S one of these which needs weathering...

Lots of visitors to the demo stand at Warley where quite a few RMwebbers (and others) had a go.
Had a varied assortment of commissions to do over the last week or two (and 6 more Conflat As still to weather).
First up a Lima "Compressor Van"

This has been fitted with Comet LMS bogies and is in EM. Its a vehicle Lima must have seen on Paul Bartletts brilliant Photo records.
some coke hoppers - all £H Kit built and very fragile - 8 shown on this shot, 12 in total

These are the same as the ones Hornby have just announced. All are in Em and have had the chassis strengthened with araldite (before they arrived with me) to try and keep them in one piece. Several have been modified to get them square but they are very light.
and a breakdown train - no room to get a shot of everything in one go but..

Hornby Dublo model modfied to run on EM track and reworked to remove the operating handles and string (chain used to replace the string) by Mike Edge
    and

A Hornby man riding coach (regauged and new couplings fitted by Mike Edge) and a Ratio ex LNWR coach built and modified by me - again in EM
I have lost the shots of the water tanker and van to go with these - will try and add them later

I have recently been busy with Murgatroyd tankers - but have had the opportunity to weather an EM Gauge Duchess. This is in one of the two types of BR Lined Maroon - and, as it happens, the owner is not over keen on that livery so..

    a clean loco

and, after and application of inks and powders

    and for some close ups...

running gear (powder applied while ink is wet)

and some dirt build up around the lower edges of the firebox/footplate "joint"

and some bits of the tender - water filler area first

and a side on of the tender itself - not the build up of dirt along the tender top and also at the joint between the underframe and the tender body..

    enjoy!

First up a DJH Britannia Arrow- built and painted by Nicktoix

required for Chapel-en-le-Frith (Central) at the end of this month.

and something different. Mike Edge has built, painted and lined one of Judith Edge Consett A tank locomotives..in S4. Now named Dante an requiring a gentle wash..

I have only weathered 1 A4 before so this was a welcome change to the LM locos I have been weathering recently. This is a Hornby A4 in BR Green - Merlin and I am very impressed by the quality of this model,

and a close up of this shed cleaned loco

And to balance the A4 a Red Stanier Princess - this one is Margaret Rose built by Mike Edge and painted by Graham Varley and again a shed cleaned loco.

I have fitted a Zimo sound chip to this as well as weathering it..

    enjoy

Latest work, two EM gauge locos. The first a modified Hornby (by an unknown builder who also painted it)

    Reaguaged by Mike Edge

I have now fitted it with a Legomanbiffo Sound chip

And an ex LNWR G2 in BR Black - built and painted by Mike Edge.
This was also built in OO gauge a while ago by Mike - he has recently fitted an EM gauge chassis to it.

a really nice loco - lightly weathered

and a bit of soot and grime added on the top of the boiler

Been busy today weathering some locos before umpiring a 90 over county junior game... The first is an EM Brassmaster LNWR G2 - a gentle wash of ink and odd bits of powder to get a slightly used look

    First a clean loco...

    and now slightly "used"

and then a funny one - take a dirty loco

then make it look like its been "cleaned"

this is very much a try it and see so does anyone have any comments on the finish??

attempt 2 to publish all the pictures went strange?!
  10. Barry O
Some of you may have seen this

well its back with me to turn it into a loco which has been hand cleaned and then I need to fit sound to it. Well first attempt at a "cleaned" loco from one which I have weathered..

and a bit more detail - smokebox and boiler

and now the cab and tender

this takes a bit of doing but due to the water based nature of the weathering doesn't require any abrasives or T cut type applications - just water and some cotton buds

Hope its looks OK. Feedback is appreciated.

Finished my last two Duchesses for this week.

First up a blue nameplated Princess Alice. - the blue background is due to it being a Polmadie locomotive.

and then a nice Maroon Duchess with some added patches as per a lovely colour photograph I have of a maroon Duchess..

and a quick pic of the two side by side - my apologies but I haven't (yet) got any EM track to stand them on.

Just finished some diesels for a client (they may appear elsewhere on a layout on RMWeb some time)

First up a Bachmann Class 40, regauged by Mike Edge and fitted with sound and weathered by me.. D343

    and some roof dirt

    A second Class 40

    and again some roof dirt

    more soon

I have, over the years weathered a number of vans.

This weeks work is to complete a Sulzer Type 2 (Class 24 - I have fitted a Legomanbiffo sound chip to), then the ex GC locos seen in earlier bits of the blog, and finally some added detail to some vans. I will post the original view here today then fill in photos of the vehicles when weathered.

    First up the Green 24

    and now with weathering...

    then the vans..

Finally got round to weathering my Bachmann Director. It has had a brass splasher top beading added and those awful sprayed on wooly silver lines on teh splashers removed before weathering...

(It might just get some new wheels as well...)

and a closer look at the front end..

With Nu-Cast originating in my home village it would seem sensible ( at the time) to build some of their offerings.

    First up a Q6.

my second kit built loco - MW005 motor, Ks wheels and still going strong... just ready for a rebuild and repaint/weather.

The next is a V2 built by my father and painted/lined by me.

This has been used on Herculaneum Dock but really needs a replacement chassis in place of the big lump of white metal it has now

Why Durham School? Well, I played rugby against Durham School every year for 7 years and walked under the nameplate every time we played there!

And finally for now - something of an oddity - but not for much longer a Ks P2. Still got a HP2M motor and Ks wheels.

    enjoy!

A day off from my umpiring duties means that I have time to do some weathering.

This is a Commission and is a Judith Edge 50T Hunslet built and painted by Mike Edge.

    Here it is clean:

    and then weathered...

Notice the diesel stains around the diesel level indicator....

    more wagons to come.....

    Enjoy!

I bought an ex Geoff Brewin built and owned Jubilee. It had been painted but not lined - so I have done that and named it Leeward Islands - it is for our club Layout Chapel en le Frith.

    Before weathering

    and now .. weathered

Just been doing a bit of weathering on an Industrial. Its a Kitson "long boilered" 0-6-0T and has been scratchbuilt, painted and lined by Mike Edge in 4mm OO

    It arrived in this state

I was supplied with some colour photos of NCB Numbers 41 and 42, and, after a bit of ink and powder application we get

    and

    I want one!

I have been contemplating a blog of sorts to keep up with weathering I do for both myself and a number of clients across Europe. The latest item to be weathered is a Heljan ) gauge Hymek - as it comes its a nice shiny BR Blue and it is very, very heavy (3.5kg) which makes handling a trifle difficult!

Using Indian ink and water as a "undercoat" I washed all over the loco including underframes. (Black ink for the roof and sides, brown for the underframes and bogies) When dry I added a variety of weathering powders (mainly black).

To add a texture to the roof around the exhaust ports and lifting eyes I added powder to wet ink (tapping the powder onto the ink from a nice soft makeup brush)

Next up will be 3 Duchesses, an A2, an A1 and a Jubilee - all EM which will be done this week once gardening is complete.

    Next up - a D10 and a D11

The D10 is Mike Edges build of a Judith Edge kit and the D11 is a Bachmann Director with added brass splasher beading...

Some close ups... first the D10

    and a burnt smokebox door..

    and now the Bachmann D11

and its a got a bit more grot on the smokebox

Just to show that I don't always weather my stock..

a Dapol prototype deltic on a modified set of Lima bogies - I know have replacement wheelsets to get it to run on code 75 rail... just need to fit them..
  22. Barry O
Been doing some weathering on four Duchesses. These are from a variety of Builders and painters .. all are DJH kits and all are EM

    - I love them!

    Duchess of Abercorn - light

    King George VI - heavy

    City of Sheffield - heavy

and finally Sir William Stanier FRS - light

The two heavily weathered locos cover up some blemishes in the paint work.
