  1. All the mention of the Waverley and I had to dig out a picture I made of two Bachmann models, suitably edited, to bring back some of what were real railways.... I have another, with Britannia 70045 from memory, but my all time favourite A3 was 60093 'Coronach' as modelled by Hornby with A4 boiler and double chimney and no deflectors, so plenty of room for me to get details and circumstances wrong! I like your woodwork Graham, good stuff.
  2. LNER 500 has been duly purchased. Having invoked severe discipline and buying this model rather than 514 I was persuaded by the 500 choice for no better reason than that I prefer the wider boiler lining spacing on 500.... So having said in the past that nobody could resist a name like 'Chamossaire' I have gone and bought 'Edward Thomson' instead. Maybe I should take up politics? If the shade of green is similar to other Hornby LNER engines it will be fine, as is the superb lining on the engine in photos I have seen, I must read up on the different boilers fitted to these engines. Is 599 with a 117 and 514 with a 118?
  3. Did you ever see such a fine sight as Stanier Princess Coronation 6220 making easy work of Shap regardless of dragging bogies on the kitchen cars? Thankyou LNER4479... I may have jumped the gun while you sleep, but I do so like the picturse, especially full screen! And what a great part of railway history. Such fine models! Will remove if my modifications to LNER4479's photo offends.
  4. May I ask what kind of lighting that is, the green looks a tad washed out compared to Kernow's ads. Nice model though, I am struggling not to buy one!
  5. Should have done what the prototypes usually did.... take a 'run' at the bank!
  6. Here is another photo of 21C7 derived from my pic of 21C3... nice dramatic wartime skies. Can't wait for the new model!
  7. Ah, I shall blame my younger brother for that. I think he exhumed it after I had finished messing with it .... At one stage I had the chassis under a Hornby Duchess of Atholl with botched Kitmaster or Airfix scraps fashioned into valve gear, and I suspect he saved it and returned to to a semblance of sanity.
  8. But, but, they are not large nor green nor influenced by Swindon. With evocative names... I agree the B12 is a great model, I had an original Triang one and painted it matt black, it probably still goes, if I knew where it was! cheers
  9. An original 21C3 'Royal Mail' in wartime black looks just the part! Who needed WDs, 8Fs and V2s when you could have this, eh? And what WD or 8F could exceed 100mph too...
  10. If these lovely carriages are still 'out' on Shap I'd love to 'do' a photo like the one we concocted of 60161 a month ago... Cheers edit, I have done a few pics of the current Princess Coronation models but used the old carriages, and a lot of artistic licence! picture edited will remove if required.
  11. I notice that Kernow have lovely copyright photos of 500 'Edward Thompson' and 514 'Chamossaire' on their site, but sold out and more expected in 28 days. The colours in their photos are often a tad warmer and richer than others. No connection, but nice to see.
  12. Bulleid 21C7 'Aberdeen Commonwealth' sometime between mid-1942 and 1944 at Salisbury shed. Probably nearer 1943 with three sanders and a WD alongside. I hope the WDs were around by then. Someone will now tell me that Salisbury shed didn't get built like that until 1960.... I have a more generic shed background if that be the case.
  13. Another photo of my carefully-exhumed-from-storage 21C3 'Royal Mail' , really as much an excuse to test depth-of-field with my new camera as to enjoy the superb model. Of course I will covert this to 21C7 in black just for fun, with the computer, not a paintbrush. I have touched the front lights with black, and buffer centres, but it's otherwise pretty much as the model looks. Which as great. I wonder when or if these engines got three sanding flap doors along the sides?
  14. Looks superb! Exquisite lining, how many A2s can one person own? How can one not buy and engine with a name like 'Chamossaire'?
  15. Oops sorry crossed wires. Don't ever let me wire a model railway! I was thinking about the colour I obtained for 21C7 in my edited version derived from 21C3 and think I will like the factory pristine look just as much if not more, it will remind me of Kitmaster and Airfix models from the early 60s.
  16. Thanks Graham, I'll add the attribution to the post. Or remove it if you prefer.
  17. Well, I dug out my 21C3 'Royal Mail' and photographed it, thus... A handsome and attractive model. So I changed its colours, name and number to 21C7 'Aberdeen Commonwealth'.... rather rough, and I doubt if my pristine version will look quite like this when it arrives, but fun regardless. Wartime black is a very hard thing to paint. Photos edited. Will remove if required. All the b+w photos I've seen of these engines with original front end, except works photos, show little evidence of cleaning. of course they must have been cleanish sometimes. Can't wait for the real thing. Cheers. edit; For those who may be interested in cameras, this photo was an experiment with a half-frame 18MP Canon EOS-M with a rare but cheap (s/h UKP35 eBay) Canon macro 18-55mm zoom lens, via full-frame adaptor (UKP9), at focal length 23mm, at F22 ... single shot, aperture priority, auto everything, ISO100, no layering or fancy stuff, 4 secs room light. So you can get reasonable model railway photos for not much money, the EOS-M was UKP110 s/h with a standard 18-55mm zoom, which I have used for over 10,000 photos. I think with the macro lens you can get a good range of realistic angles and perspectives, but I have also bought a half-frame 33MP Canon M6 MkII with 15-45mm lens which offers stupendous definition and depth of field up to F40, with 9,000+ pixels wide images leaving plenty of room for my much-enjoyed editing. apologies again for going off-thread Edit 2; the lower lamps on the front of 21C3 have a backward lean, shades of 35024... but nobody mentioned it at the time.
  18. I had absolutely no idea that 21C3 'Royal Mail' was so rare and/or sought-after. I have exhumed mine and will be very careful with it as I take photos today! Here's a great photo by Graham_Muz, a very handsome model to my eyes in Malachite or black. And yes Murray you are right the lower front cowling has a sharp lower edge I will fix the picture of 21C7. Thanks Dunsignalling for the date approximation for the end of the widow's peak cowling approx. 1944. What dramatic years these were, often sad of course. Was not 35003 the holder of the 105mph+ record for the class in later years? Not bad for a wartime mixed traffic engine.
  19. Like this? Concocted from pictures of my Hornby Bulleid Pacifics and editing with Paintshop Pro 6. Will remove if it offends. Here is a quick guess at the new model...
  20. Further to my display of ignorance above, here is the Hattons photo of 21C3 to compare with Graham's excellent 21C7 photos from a few messages back. Looks pretty similar to me, and I have feeling that these models are quite hard to find second-hand.
  21. I look forward to 21C7 and recall that when I created pictures of early Merchant Navy engines a few years ago there was a veritable plethora of shapes around the front. Well, enough to confuse me... I have Irwell and the Haynes 'The Original Bulleid Pacifics' for reference. Perhaps there were actually only a few arrangements around the front of the early engines, the original 21C1 and then the cutaway version, then the short deflectors and flat-bottom top cross piece? Do we have any dates for the types of front? E.g the change from curved front top to the flatter cross piece? I notice that there are few photos from the war years (understandably) and many show 21C1-9 without nameplates, and also, very few are clean! At least one could practice weathering on 21C7 ! Edit, I'm presuming that 21C7 is the same as the already-produced 21C3 but with a strengthening strip along the sides as per the pictures of your assessment sample? Edit 2; I think 21C3 already has the body strip, looking at my photos more carefully. So 21C7 is essentially a name/number/livery change? cheers
  22. At risk of boring everyone, (who, me?) , here are two more ordinary photos of 35024 as it came out of the box. edit, almost enough to make a person yearn for a bit of Hornby BR Brunswick Green, innit ! I have been playing around with cameras and stuff, someday I might even run a model train...
  23. It may have been mentioned already but A2/3 class R3832 LNER 500 'Edward Thompson' and R3833 LNER 514 'Chamossaire' are both listed as 'in stock' at Hornby. Apologies if already known. I look forward to seeing the LNER green.
  24. That's appalling. I hope you get an apology and a properly packed model or refund, and more apologies.
  25. I wonder if the Merchants ever ran in blue with the lower front cowling cut away? I have done an experiment with messing with colours and tones on the bodywork, I have no idea how this could be achieved by painting or varnishing the model directly. Will remove if it offends. Somewhere out west in the summer of '51. Sounds like the name of a movie. I think this model comes into its own when the hardware detailing is fitted. 35024 was always a western section engine was it not? cheers
