Always good to talk!
FWIW I enjoy reading you're modelling exploits and look forward to seeing more 😊

I genuinely don't understand why anyone wants all wheel drive on a co-co in model form. RTR model bogies simply dont work like the prototype and I've lost count on how many I've had ones that rock on their centre axles. Added to that converting to EM/P4 is much harder.

They have the grubby look of the period down to a tee, unusual to see one with the visible plating on the window modelled. Youve got me thinking about another project to work on now, I think I still have enough of my BG window blanks to do something similar...
I like the sound of this!
I didn't notice the blanking until I started messing about with them... and then realised the original builder did put quite a bit of effort into them so felt I should perhaps do likewise. It looks quite neat if perhaps a little thick but I can live with that as I like the variety it introduced.
I'll probably add a few detail bits to the ends tbh. The one thing I can't seem to source though is steps.

As hinted in a previous post this year I've been mostly messing with Super BGs for my early 2000 period. Plan is to have a 4 car set for use with my 67.... which could be classed as a full length train that fits the layout 😀
A long time ago I bought 4 Super BGs off ebay and didn't really pay much attention to them and parked them on the "to sort later" shelf. Anyhow they're a bit nicer than i first thought as all 4 are different and the previous owner had put some effort into them!
One of my pet hates is having gangway gaps where no gaps should be. While not being the most refined I prefer having a keen floating plate than having nothing at all. It's a quick fix by chopping the plate off the end of the Bachmann gangway then drilling a centre hole and fixing the coupling plate with a spring. While the coach is in bits I also fitted hunt magnetic couplings to the inners at buffer beam height so along with the spring in the corridor connector means then move more as a complete set then with a loose coupling effect!
The ends are just left alone with a kadee. One of the slightly cool features is the outer coaches have red LEDs set up so I'm going to program these as a set to allow the ends to illuminate depending on direction of travel... and have a park mode for both ends to be illuminated if sat alone in a loop.
While the body was off and seeing as there aren't many windows I've replaced the glazing. It's a case of spot the differences between the four of them 😀
Also replaced are the side handrails which were a complete pain to get looking half ok. I admit I've given up now and am going with as is.... just need to paint them! The originals were brass etches and looked square. Most had fallen off by themselves but a few were really stuck on and removing them caused paint to lift so I've had to patch paint quite a bit. Some extra weathering will help hide my mess ups!
The original weathering wasn't to my tastes so these have been T-cut to remove quite a bit. It also removes the matt flatness applied and while at it i removed so paint runs.
Overall I think I'm quite pleased with the overall look;
The all important lack of a gap looks better to me now;
I'm going to re-visit the underframe weathering of all of them as some look a bit splattery and also blend in the corridor connectors to the ends. I'm not sure about those buffers and I'm also in two minds over adding in extra details to the ends and perhaps the underframes as they were meant to be a quick project just to get layout ready! What do you think? Would extra effort be worth it
Happy Modelling

Very nice Nick! Thanks for the heads up on the destination frames which I'll check mine soon.
I've been distracted with super BGs this last month. Really thought they'd be a quick project but as always things take longer than expected! But I've made a start on Lab 19....
I've had the files out.... and filler after a few knife slips! I've opened out the windows ready for frames. Hopefully leaving enough space for glazing behind. Also done a bit of shaping of the sides to roof... not sure it's much of an improvement though.
And there's a few windows and doors to fill in.
This is plastikard infills with two fills and sands.
I'm snipping off the roof vents but not too happy with the rough look so will try something elseas from the few photosi have its obvious where they used to be . There's lots going on and different on the roof so will have a few bits to sort out and guess!
So plenty of filling and filing to do!

Interesting...
I removed the front windows on my 101 the other day and replaced them with the Shawplan etches. They certainly help improve the front, seems to be minor differences but its not a huge amount between the orginal moulded frames and the Shawplan etches.
The sides however as well, one of those "The more you look at it...", the sides are definatley wrong, but I guess you either live with it or dont. LEt us know your findings Will, havnt resprayed the rpoof yet on my one, so will be interested on the mods. MY other 101, will be the Serco one with the REP centre vehicle
NL
They're very subtle but great frames and make a huge difference to the face of the unit. I'm not looking too hard at the sides ;)
I like the sound of the serco unit! That one will look great!

I know what you mean with winter motivation, even though the garage is insulated I still find it’s a very small part of the year where temperature and motivation align to get work done out there.
that said, I almost have the opposite issue, Im desperate to get out in the garage to do some painting but it’s just far too cold to actually do it!
watching Iris 2 with interest, I’m very torn between modelling this or a more involved
conversion to the wipac fitted pair.
Hopefully it'll be a fun project! I never really intended doing this one but i came across some hurst etches along with some sprinter stuff i was after.... then thought why not! So have changed one intended 101 project to be Iris 2 after seeing this photo on flickr
There are a few things I need to research such as the roof, Interior and general differences Vs a standard 101. But I understand the unit is still in existence so have a few more modern photos to explore.
I'll be very happy to swap notes!

The centre windows are narrower than the outer. I measured the centres at 625mm, the outers at 655mm and the reinforced outers at 645mm across the visible glass. By your era I suspect most, if not all, 101s will have had the reinforced drivers window. Some cars also had the reinforced window on the second man’s side too.
The Bachmann front windows whilst being a better shape than on the Lima/Hornby body are just a little bit out but it is by fractions of millimetres. They are a bit wide but not quite tall enough.
Thanks! That was my suspicion and I'll make sure I stick on the frames in the right order!

I've just stripped a pair of Bachmann 101s and it's quite interesting (well for me) to see the body shape (photos on my thread).
I'm thinking the bodyside curves might not be sharp enough. Also the centre window looks narrower than the outers. Do you know if the centre window is the same size as the outers? I plan on using the etches anyway as they look so much better

Winter is a strange time as although I have more time for modelling the garage is so cold I struggle for enthusiasm!
Anyhow I've started on a new pair of victims....
I've spent a bit of time pondering the front curves on Bachmanns 101. Having stripped a pair it's a bit easier to see the bodyshell shape.
I'm coming to the conclusion that Bachmanns front curve is perhaps a little shallow so I may spend a bit of time with some files.
The project is Iris 2.... so some chopping and filling will be needed. If anyone has any photos of the roof that'll be an ace help as I think I need to remove and add quite a few bits!

HNY Rich!
Some great projects!
Thanks for posting this info and interestingly (well for me) I'm up to something similar and been looking at wheels.
I've just bought a few of the new Peco/Parkside kits and forgot they included wheels. On looking at them the profile doesn't seem too bad so was thinking about using them in EM. I haven't measured the axle length so thanks for the heads up and will measure one soon.
I do like a Grampus and have just found the old 1987 RM article which inspired me to have a go at building them (at that time so I'm hoping my next attempts are better/run). Now I'm researching the different types to decide whether to go fitted or unfitted. I look forward to seeing how yours turn out.
Cheers

Please keep us updated on your progress. 😊
And your 101s etc! I spent a few minutes last evening looking at curves.... of the 101 variety.... and there is definitely something subtle going on in the corners on the prototype. It kind of looks to me that the prototype curves backwards from the front before the corner and arc of the roof profile. Will have a browse later to see if I can find any better.

It was me that measured the 101 at Grosmont with the help of Dale Smith and Eddie Knorn for Brian to draw up for this Shawplan etch.
You can see the etch above. You get a reinforced window included for if you want to represent one of the units where the drivers (and occasionally the secondmans) window has been modified.
Below is a picture of a test fit I did. You need to reduce the height at the top of the windows by about 1mm, I used Evergreen strip, and widen the driver and secondmans windows outwards before adding the new frames.
It has been claimed on the Met Cam Lightweight thread that the Bachmann model has a better profile than the Lima/Hornby body. It was pointed out in the press (IIRC in Rail Express Modeller but it may have spilled out onto internet fora) at the release of the Bachmann 101 that it was not the right shape at all on it's front top corners and the Lima/Hornby body is far better shaped in that area.
You pays your money and make your choices how you see fit but my Met Cam fleet will all be Lima or Hornby bodies with modified front windows and chassis with power provided by the Replica chassis. A money no object job would probably involve the same but running on Bachmann chassis and bogies.
Cheers
David
Hello David! Nice to meet you at Define.
Aha! This the thread you mentioned about the 101 corners. I might just get out some files on my next Bachmann... or Lima effort!!

Really interesting and great trackwork Guy! Thanks for the write up.
I like the look of your tie bars. Do you know if they're still available? I'm revisting all of mine as 3 of my flatbottom turnouts have failed this year.

I thought they may keep you nice and busy :)

Stunning!
How many of these do you need to do for a complete rake?
-
I tend to use T cut these days... applied very sparingly and rubbing very gently. Saying that I've only had about a 50% success rate with Vitrains as the base paint is so thin. However railmatch paints have so far been a perfect match so have been easy to fix with an airbrush.

All good information - and what a neat job you have made fitting the Shawplan etch to the Lima front. It now shows the Bachmann windows are incorrect.
Thanks for posting Will. It would be great if you would update us here or on the "Lima Class 101 Windows" thread - thanks!
Thanks. If you're interested I'll probably be cluttering up my workbench thread with 101 projects in the new year :)
I've been debating whether to standardise on Bachmann or lima shells, and was going to go with Bachmann. Highlighting the arc of the front of the roof has made me realise why the Bachmann one looks better head on so will pick on a lima victim to see if I can mod the front.

Thanks for the pics and info. I would feel very reluctant to cut up a Bachmann model at current prices but I would not have that same problem with the Hornby (which I don't have yet).
Mating the Hornby body to the Bachmann chassis will be interesting as I doubt replicating the Bachmann clips will
Yeah I always find it a bit daunting hacking any model about! I like to pick up non runners or paint disasters for hacking projects as at least I feel I can't make them any worse! Well that's the theory.
I'm part way through a lima body/Bachmann mashup and the biggest problem I found is the Bachmann DTCL chassis is very bendy. I think the design uses the clips on the body to straighten the chassis with help from the circuit board.... I saw no way of replicating these and as I don't use the original circuit boards I just stuck some spare brass square rods I had spare along the inside to straighten the chassis.
Then the body is stuck on by my new favourite method of using sticky black tac. Tbh I have problems with both Bachmann 108s and 101s with bendy chassis.
If its of interest I just found a photo of a Lima with shawplan frames Vs Bachmann without when I was toying with the idea of not hacking the Bachmann one about.
I decided to keep the destination frame to avoid a repaint and changed the rest. I'm think I may just take a smidge off the front of the lima roof profile to flatten it ever so slightly to match Bachmanns which I think matches the prototype better. The rest of the roof looks ok to me..... although I Hadn't noticed it before!!
