  1. I've built quite a number of MTK kits over the years and had met Colin more than once. I think, as others have pointed out, that what he did needs to be seen in the context of the time. It's probably no exaggeration to say he singlehandedly kick started "modern image" modelling. His output was prodigious and whilst no-one has ever claimed his kits were perfect in terms of RTR standard of the time, usable. His cast W/M Class 74 needed two Hornby Class 25 m/bogies but would pull anything and was 40 years ahead of any likely RTR version. Yes, the kits needed work and in those preWWW days if you needed advice you asked around or figured it out for ourselves, it was called modelling. The end result ? Look no further http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/95231-tonbridge-west-yard/ Final outing at the Canterbury show in Jan Stu
  2. They put you up at the Pegwell Bay! How the other half live... .. Stu
  3. In the interests of balance and to inject a little culture Margate is actually quite noted for it's sunsets. JWM Turner, closely associated with Margate and now has an art centre there named after him, even committed them to canvas. Stu
  4. Think I've just had the same. Update for Firefox appeared whilst on RMweb. Suspicious as Firefox usually updates when you first open. Windows Defender blocked and removed it. HTH Stu
  5. A few bedraggled people in small inflatable possibly. Stu Ok, Ok! Off to naughty step for a couple of days. Festive wotsits to one and all.
  6. Not so much speculation as a plea from the wilderness An updated Drewry/04 Stu
  7. Maybe, maybe not. Get a smallish clean wet paintbrush and being very careful see if the decal will "lift" if you work the brush around the the edge. If so get some water (or Microset or very thin PVA) and tamp it down again. Piece of sponge can be a better alternative to kitchen tissue and the like. If it's a bubble that's the problem prick with pin and put some water on. At the risk of causing upset if you read the many threads on here about applying decals you'll read about using A, B or C and not using X, Y or Z. By all means make a mental note of them but my advice is find your own way through. Decal applying is as much an art as a science. Let us know how it goes. Stu
  8. Applied to a matt or gloss surface? Gloss or gloss varnished surface is the ideal. (Rough) matt surface increases chances of silvering. Using Microsol/set; Decsalfix; Mr Softer can help. Applying with thinned PVA or Kleer will also help. I'm sure we can all add even more advice but some idea of what transfer onto what object would help. Stu
  9. Not necessarily. For example if Hornby came up with an up-to-date "traditionally" powered 14XX then they'd benefit from a broader spread of potential buyers plus those who have hesitated over the alternative. Stu
  10. I'm sure this thread will raise a few smiles at Hornby's command bunker tomorrow morning. Whatever's announced it's been in the works for a year or two but I'm blowed if I can remember what we were frothing about then. A few thoughts An all new Class 06 0-4-0 shunter long shot - An SR bodied 2-EPB. v. long shot - all new 27XX pannier Something in transit, possibly duplicating someone else's announcement. Stu
  11. I'm sure none of us even thought about doing that until you suggested we didn't ........ :-) Not certain I'd welcome a * *** as although it's not my era I'd probably get one for sentimental reasons though I'd imagine others will be delighted. Stu
  12. On an Airfix thread somewhere it probably is Getting somewhat off topic now..... Stu
  13. What on earth were you doing at Pegwell that time of the morning.....? Usually the preserve of dogwalkers and birdwatchers at that hour Stu
  14. Rab, you're not the only one. The reason for Left handedness makes for interesting if occasionally disturbing reading. https://www.google.co.uk/search?source=hp&ei=izESXMuLB8qWsAePypPYDw&q=why+are+some+people+left+handed&oq=why+are+some+&gs_l=psy-ab.1.0.0l10.151.5702..8487...0.0..0.3086.10893.5-1j1j1j0j3......0....1..gws-wiz.....0..0i131j0i3.8r5JtuagnAw Stu
  15. Quite! I have a vague and possibly incorrect recollection that the first few Brush Type 2's had a "blue" tinged window surround. Hornby's model of an early green one one certainly had surrounds with a blueish hue. Stratten-Steven's British Rail Mainline Diesel Drawings book says white for the Hymek but curiously does not give a full BS no. which he does for practically every other colour in the book. This seems to have repeated in Lewis's Western Hydraulics book. However Curtis's Hymek Dawn has a clear mention of Light Grey for the surrounds in the correspondence. Putting two and two together wonder if it was the same grey as used on Warship (and other classes) bodyside stripe. In that case it would be BS2660-5-058 You can find the shade here https://www.e-paint.co.uk/BS2660_colour_chart.asp but looks far too dark but that could be because of all sorts of reasons. So I'm actually I'm none the wiser. I did get up close to them in BR days so if it is a grey, rather than some species of off-white then it's going to be a very very pale one. I think I'll stick with white for my Hymeks as it looks right and if anyone complains I'll shout Scale Colour at them. Stu P.S. I've got two white cars on the drive from different manufacturers. I'm sure you can guess what comes next :-)
  16. I'm back..... My mother, schooled in the 30's, was made to learn to write right handed. Even in the 60's being a LHanded pupil gave you a label of sorts. I remember being singled out for doing ticks the "wrong" way though never heard an explanation why they were wrong. No. 2 daughter is a leftie and has a LH keyboard and LH configured mouse provided by work. The Army though has no LH version of the SA80 assault rifle unlike most of it's contemporaries. I'll leave you all with this historical fact. The Latin for R handed is dextro, for L handed it's sinister. Stu
  17. Quite right too!, where's my soapbox...... :-) However being taken (!) out Christmas shopping so you're all spared my ramblings. However this might be of use https://www.anythinglefthanded.co.uk/ And for all the other downtrodden lefties out there this mighty cheer you up https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2003/aug/13/2 Bah Humbug to one and all Stu P.S. the AA reckon we're better drivers so there :-)
  18. Will be there with Portwey http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/125196-portwey-wessextrains-oo/ Info here http://www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/events/17651-IsleofThanetRailwaySocietyExhibition Stu
  19. Hi, Correct and I think that has been covered quite well but like many enquiries on here throws up all sorts of odd side-shoots that the curious might find interesting. Stu
  20. Summer 2014. A scene now from the past as they can now run round at Wool. Going OTT for a moment if I may. There were those who still thought the GWR ended somewhere south of Portland Bill. I am tempted to enquire further but can hear my Dad's voice simply saying "Don't!" Maybe your paths crossed at some point. Cheers Stu
  21. Hi, Weymouth was Southern at that stage. Technically the Southern region started at Maiden Newton. The Hymeks were stalwarts of the services to the Western from introduction till withdrawal. Westerns did appear on parcels services into Wey as well as Warships which were also diagrammed on some passenger services. If memory serves (probably doesn't!) 1O65 was Bristol-Weymouth. Must have come back from station - tail lamp on. Stu
  22. Thought for the day. Always turn over the instructions. Might be something important on the back!
