    You could quite comfortably get three trucks in here so why not 3 layouts? Got the HiFi system pumpin out all my favorite rock-n-roll, aircon, bottle of cabinet on the go etc. There's just got to be a  better name for it than the Man Cave.

    Has anyone used a arduino program to power a turntable.

      To control one yes. The last two (Dec 23 and Mar 24) issues of the MERG journal have featured a two part article on using an arduino  and a stepper motor for one.

      If you are interested in Arduinos for a model railway join MERG the Arduino SIG is a great source.

    If your box room is 9ft long don’t make your boards 9ft unless you’re VERY confident in your woodworking skills….!

      I remember someone making the centre baseboard trapezoidal so it could pull out.

      Using dowel type baseboard connectors is a no no unless you allow sufficient space to pull the boards apart.

    I weakened and bought my 1st O gauge loco. I genuinely didn't realise it would be so big!

      It is the fact that it grows by the cube of 7/4 because length width and height are all scaled up  that means over 5 times the volume. It is why 0 gauge stock has so much presense.

    If it is still available 'How to wire your Model Railroad' by Linn Wescott is a good basic guide.  It is American but uses the same principles as we do over here.  The ISBN is 0-89024-511-8.  It goes from basic to circuits for two or more trains.

      One of the rules which I think was first articulated by Linn is turnouts connected frog to frog must have an isolation in both rails between them. It may just apply to electrofrog and hand built turnouts but it has helped me time after time.

      If it was just on the 5th one could make sure any pets are indoors, now it starts before Halloween and carries on well past bonfire night  reappearing around new year.

    Hi, I am new to this site, however I would like to inform members of a new DCC Command Station I have developed. It has an Arduino Nano and H-bridge with only a few components on a small PCB. The generation of DCC packets are completed within an Android App. This makes for a very simple hardware design ! The App is free and the components required are available on eBay.  The system controls up to 20 locos, 8 functions and up to 16 turnout/accessories. Short address programming is also included. 

    All compatible with small to medium size layouts. 

     

    Details of this project are on the Instructables and Hackster websites. The free Android App is on Google Play Store - titled 'LocoMotive'

    RIP Dave 'Swarbs' Swarbrick (died 6th June) arguably the most influential British folk rock violinist since the 60's, ex Fairport Convention and a long solo career. Did so much to reinvigorate British folk music. Joining that great band elsewhere. Maybe he and Sandy Denny will play together again.

    Why is DIY never so easy as the instructions imply? Just been replacing some soffit vents.

      It does depend on what the soffits are made from and the type. For the round type I had a 70mm hole saw to go in the drill they would just push in the holes.
