  1. Hi Jeff I'm still lurking as usual. As the revised title of this thread states - what next? Well I'm sorry to say but I think a lot of walling!! looking at this photo your bottom row of stones are ok, but all the others are way over scale!! Only joking Jeff, that wall is nowhere near the S&C you'll be pleased to hear!! Don't forget a stile or two, but I'm not struck on how they do them (did this one anyway) in Derbyshire? And if all this is getting to much and you can't be bothered to finish off the last 1% of the wall you can always get some of these to the correct scale. Keep up the excellent work and enjoy your break. Chip.
  2. Hi Don "Smoot Holes" is what I've always known them as and you are correct, they let the sheep through, but not the cattle. And a large flat stone placed across the hole acted as a gate if you wanted to close the hole off. I remember them well on my Grandad's farm. Something doesn't look right to me there though, it's unusual (I never have anyway) to see a row in a wall like that, normally just the 1 hole, the only other thing I've seen anything like that is if it is near a river, then it's to let the water through.if the land floods. I await other explanations with interest. Chip
  3. Hi Jeff The first thing I did when I saw that first photo of the walling was to say out loud "WOW", it looks stunning. "Edit: It's difficult to keep the wall to the same height due to the variation in the level of the landscape. If necessary, any "problems" can be sorted out at the end by adding a bit of extra filler onto the Fell to reduce any "high" parts." No problem at all with that, real walls follow the undulations of the ground, but never that accurately, you always have high spots and just ask any sheep, they'll soon tell you where all the low places are!! I think it's fair to say that you are modelling pre health & safety times, otherwise you would need to include the grab bars/handles/whatever you want to call them into the tops of your wall, I could not believe my eyes the other day when I saw this. Keep up the excellent work Sir. Chip.
  4. Hi Jeff I'm still lurking as usual. Talking of stone walls and I quote "I also need to just grit my teeth and start the stone walls" I spotted this feature whilst out walking the other day and immediately thought of KL2. Ok, it wasn't S&C territory, but it's something different, at least I've never seen a stile like that before. Keep up the excellent work. Chip
  5. Hi Jeff You know me, always lurking in the background and thoroughly enjoying the rapid pace at which KL2 is coming along. I do quite a bit of hill walking and every time I go over a stile I think of KL/what's to come on KL2, so when the time comes there could easy be some more pics coming your way! Still loving every photo, so keep em coming please. Chip
  6. Hi Jeff Looking excellent dear boy, that second pic shows just what a wonderful "playroom" you are creating, keep them pics coming, can't have too many. Jealous of Cumbria
  7. Hi Al "First (and very basic) questions then: do I need to stick the copper-clad sleepers to the template, and if so, what's the best way?" Yes, well I do anyway!! I tried using double sided tape, but I found that awkward to move the "sleeper" if you'd not got it lined up perfectly and a pain to get the template off when finished. What I now use is a 50p Asda glue stick as it allows you to line things up easily, also when you come to peel off your template, just pour boiling water on the track and it releases the glue, a quick scrub with some fairy and an old toothbrush to remove any flux followed by a good rinse and the jobs a good un!! Hope this helps Chip
  8. HEY MISTER JEFF, don't forget Sir Bodge & myself also like, sorry, LOVE pics, the more the merrier. Seriously though, it's good to see the garden coming along very nicely and like everyone else I'm really looking forward to KL2 starting soon. Keep up the excellent work. Chip.
  9. You know me too well Jeff, I'm never far away. Always looking for pics of anything, bunker full of boxes, study full of books, garden full of plants, I'm not fussy!! I think it's interesting to see how other people build things and maybe one or two of us can learn some new ways of doing things, so for me it's definitely a "YES PLEASE". I personally am really looking forward to KL2. Hope your settling in well. Chip.
  10. I hope Jeff's not wasting money on LOGS, surely he can just burn the off cuts from the baseboard subframes, that should see him through a winter or 2!! Hope you get settled in quickly Jeff, looking forward to more PICS, be they garden or bunker.
  11. Hi Jeff What a difference 12 days make, at the speed they've put the top half of your new house on I wouldn't worry, the bunker will be built in half a day!! Looking very, very nice. I think I speak for Bodge as well as myself when I say "Pics are NEVER boring", looking forward to more. Chip.
  12. Hi Jeff Loving the photo's, just to be different the first one is my favourite looking at Wild Boar. Do you know where the third one is?? I cannot place it and it's bugging me!! Quote from yourself "I've still got a few more photos up my sleeve...". They are no good up your sleeve, get them on here, PLEASE. Chip.
  13. Some loco pics. If you want some more photos then you'll have to ask for them as I have the feeling I've bored people senseless. I know one person that you have NOT bored at all!!! I'm thoroughly enjoying this fast track look back at KL1 and I've got a funny feeling I'm not the only person enjoying this, so MORE PICS PLEASE JEFF
  14. Morning Jeff Approx 4 miles from home at Bretherdale Head which is a beautiful dead end valley, and about half way there I cross the railway, OK, it's NOT the S&C, but the WCML. Or my FOOT for that matter Rob Why not Andy?, It has held my weight for many a year!! Just looked on a 1:25,000 map and it's marked as a FB, so it's officially a bridge!!! Chip Edit to add:- There is a better photo on Google Maps which really shows it off well.
  15. Good evening all Jeff In that statement are the words PICS and VIADUCT, also I seem to recall quite a bit of discussion about a PACKHORSE BRIDGE on KL1 Well, here is my solution for KL2, OK, it's not quite a PACKHORSE BRIDGE or a VIADUCT, but there are some PICS of it!! It's just 3 big slabs of stone, 1 laid either side and 1 plonked on top to form a bridge, as far as I could tell they are NOT fastened together at all. Can I expect to see one on KL2?? Your Lurking Cumbrian Cameraman.
  16. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Lord Lunester Don't worry about "another increment in the age count" because I've discovered that birthdays are actually good for you, the more you have, the longer you live!! Chip
  17. Hi Jeff "Short of having a curved single and double slip I can't do more." SORRY, That just shows my inexperience with such matters as track geometry had never crossed my mind!! Chip
  18. Hi Jeff Just before you all go & discuss something else can I throw another spanner in the works?? NO??? Well I'm going to anyway!! I'm pretty sure (I'll be checking next time I'm over that way) that Kirkby Stephen West IS actually on a curve, albeit a very gentle one. I very much like Joseph's idea AND it would be comparable with KSW prototype. Photographic evidence may follow in the next week or 3. Chip
  19. Morning Jeff Yes, it's far too early, but I'm practising for tomorrow morning!! Having just had a couple of years of 'early retirement' I'm going back to work as my mattress isn't as comfy as it used to be!! My phone and TWO alarms are already set for 3am in the morning, OUCH!! Chip. P.S. You are doing well if you can have an early morning think, it's taking all my brain power just keeping my eyes open!!
  20. Hi Jeff Forgive me if I'm wrong, but is the branch viaduct not single track and the lower end of the S&C loop double track?? Unless of course your going to do a ribblehead on it?? Confused of Cumbria
  21. Matterhorn must surely equal snow?? and if there's going to be snow then you'll need one of these!! I saw this in a cabinet at the Wakefield show last weekend and thought of you, (IF I remember rightly it was scratch built in O gauge), another little task for those long winter nights ahead!! Chip
  22. Some more pics from yesterdays wander. Looking down the valley with Smardale Gill Viaduct just visible in the distance A little further towards the viaduct with the quarry visible on the left Smardale Gill Viaduct Something I'd never noticed before, the stream goes through 2 arches, not just 1. Also note the stonework on the bottom 5-6ft. When the weather is as nice as it was yesterday it's a pleasure "working" for KL 2. I can't wait to see what these new plans with the Baron's input involve. Chip
  23. Hi Jeff As promised some prototype pics of the quarry idea for your NER route, nothing too fancy though!! It's a little quarry with a couple of lime kilns and it's very close to Smardale Gill Viaduct!! Looking from up the valley From across the valley Close up of the quarry, it is very shallow (if that's the right word?), the lime kilns are just off the left hand edge of the photo, camera man needs sacking!! And just to prove you don't need a quarry OR a cutting to show off your rock building skills, they can simply be built into the hill side!! Plenty more where those came from and all the original full sizes are available should you require a little more detail. Chip
  24. Hi Jeff Good to see you've are having a good play test with KL1 before it becomes firewood. Based on the ideas that have been put around on here I think I have the perfect PROTOTYPE extra for KL2, but I'm saying no more until I've been and got some pics for you, hopefully later this week. Enjoy tomorrow and don't forget to hide your hammer, otherwise KL1 will be full of nails!! Chip.
  25. Hi Jeff Loving this 2 tier idea, it sounds fantastic. The S&C's Viaduct @ Smardale with its 12 arches AND the NER's @ Smardale Gill with its 14 arches should keep you busy for a couple of nights after KL Mk1 has gone to the big model railway exhibition in the sky!! Plenty of time for ideas and planning for KL Mk2, really looking forward to this developing!! Chip P.S. I can see me having a walk along there to get some pics to tempt you!!
