  1. Imagine if the GCR and Met had become the fifth member of the 'Big Five'...
  2. More progress on the second Kitson twin. The window surrounds are very fiddly to do! Lines are a bit wonky but my hands are not the steadiest. I do not like brush painting at all.
  3. Another development today, fitted a 3.7v-12v converter to TK&F No.5. Please excuse the 'orrible rats' nest of wiring, this is pretty much my test mule so gets torn apart a lot. This is the result. Massive increase in power, where before it was struggling to move 3 (heavily weighted) vans around the layout, it was dealing with 6 with relative ease. This test is on the floor to show the speed increase. The crash into the rug was because I left the inertia control turned up too much. The downsides are: Reduced battery life Slow speed control requires a very light touch In all I think this small shunting loco may fare better with an 8v converter rather than the full 12v to give enough power to pull the skin off a rice pudding, but without needless breaking of sound barriers. The problem is the 8v PCB is twice the size, going to have to see if I can cram it in.
  4. After a rather tiring week helping to put on a 4 hour broadcast for Cancer Research, it was a good excuse to stay in and do a bit of modelling. The second Kitson 2-6-0 is now in Ford Venetian Red, the tank handrail holes having been filled in. After the paint hardens it'll be time to mask up and apply the black edging. I am procrastinating about building the chassis extension to hold the cylinders and front pony truck. The small details have been glued on rather than soldered.
  5. Possibly not the USA though, maybe the European powers, since the US Army was converted from a glorified citizens militia to a full blown mechanised army (and the manufacturing with it) by the two world wars, along with the transfer of the financial capital of the world from UK to USA.
  6. A bit like the conversion of the Class 48s to 47s.
  7. A few oldies, some from the 'cuts and shuts' thread.

    Crinan

Fantastic modelling. I've visited the real-life Crinan a few times and your model certainly captures the 'air' of the place!
  9. Maybe. Possibly start with a BR Std. 2 2-6-2T body. I still need to make my Standard 8 2-8-0, and finish my P2/4 and C7/3!
  10. Well, I may have been wrong. While FUD is excellent for bodywork detail, its inflexibility and brittleness makes fitting wheelsets in the underframes very difficult. I have temporarily mounted the coach on some wagon wheels, by trimming the ends of the axles down and gently easing them in, but feel a better (and more free-rolling) solution may be required, possibly some brass bearings. Possibly the underframe may have been better in WSF. Here's the coach in primer prior to white coat. Currently I'm waiting for the paint to harden before attempting to clean up a masking tape disaster.
  11. I kind of imagined it as a Std. version of the GWR 15xx class, in a similar way to the Std.5 being a Black 5 made out of standard parts. Of course, it would only have stood a chance of existing had the 08 and similar DE locos not been built.
  12. It definitely is worth it! The 3D elements make it stand out and come to life so well.
  13. Ooh that sounds interesting! I knocked this up some time ago.
  14. Tim AKA Athelstan is using a couple of 0-6-0ST locos on his 'Clyre Valley Railway' layout, which has a continuous section of 1-in-30. As far as I am aware they are being used as banking engines and he seemed pretty pleased with them. Whilst not the train engine in this video, one is visible in the siding.
  15. A bit like the Brecon Mountain Railway?
  16. I made a small screen capture video to show what layers I used (in case anyone is interested), and in what order. This is a simplified version as the steam/smoke 'chuffs' are treated as a single layer, the 64 individual chuffs are in another composition.
  17. I had an idea for an exhibition layout that used a well-known and proven track layout, but the entire thing is set in a house, with the railway running along the kitchen sideboards, along with a bridge over a (full) sink, supported on a floating piece of tupperware. The water column would be a pepper pot, the engine shed a cereal packet with holes cut in it.....
  18. I do like the idea of a pre WW2 channel tunnel having been built. Would it have been used in the evacuation of the BEF in 1940 and subsequently flooded I wonder? In which case would there have been a grand reunification in the 1950s? Would it have connected with the GCR as the main trunk route into the UK?
  19. The scope and detail is staggering! What was your favourite part?
  20. Thanks! I am using photoshop to cut assets out, after effects to do the visual effects, and premiere pro to do the sound.
  21. Here's a few clips I did of Tony Wright's excellent 'Little Bytham' layout a while back, with thanks to Tony for letting me re-post the clips! Thanks also to the original posters of the clips. I need to get some new ambience, I think....
  22. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a fun little diversion. I sometimes enjoy taking video footage of model railways and fiddling with it, adding sound effects and visual effects. Here's a few clips of the latest effort. The original video was shot by Ted Polet, on the delightful Craigcorrie and Dunalistair Railway, and I thank Ted for letting me post it here. Here's the original clip for reference: So on the first shot, I replaced the background and extended the foreground, added a steam leak, then the obvious whistle and chimney steam effects. Oh yes, and the chickens! This is my first time trying out steam effects (using smoke 'charges' shot against a green screen, available free online). The sound is cobbled together from lots of clips. I try and get the rough size of the loco and the number of cylinders right, and slow down/speed up the audio as necessary. As an example, there are 4 audio layers in this first shot. 1-countryside ambience (birds etc.) 2-motorcycle engine loop (for some nearby machinery/perhaps the car) 3-the whistle 4-chuffs The second shot, I was trying to get my eye in with the smoke effects so went a bit harder with that. There are 64 individual 'chuff' layers, tracked to the chimney of the loco as the origin point, then given velocity and varying amounts of drift. The background has been replaced in this shot as well (meaning the telegraph poles had to be cut out) as well as the foreground, which is patched together and blended from 3 layers. You may notice the train and the steam goes behind the signal. This meant the signal needed chopping out (took a while to cut it all out) and re-laid over the steam. Anything transparent needs replacing, in this case the green aspects in the signal have been replaced so you can see through them. Silly really but I hope it helps it blend! On this shot I really wanted to create a shadow of the steam on the ground. I duplicated the steam layer when it was done, then converted it to a black layer, blurred it, turned it semi transparent and stretched it out to represent the angle of the sun. The loco's shadow is a simple moving black shape. Of course these are for practice and you can spot the joins, but I hope it entertains! Thanks again to Ted!
