Class 88/93

Class 88/93

All we want is for Dapol to take a punt or let someone else have a go. I'd just like an 88 or 2 on my layout. It will involve a different body and some alterations to chassis from the 68, but pretty much everything else would be identical. Must be worth something in the cost to develop it for Dapol.

I must agree, they are great videos. I have followed Fabio for a couple of years now. He was originally simply active on Twitter, posting amongst many other things the odd couple of minutes of cab ride video. I, and I suspect a number of others, often commented that he should start doing You Tube videos, and all of a sudden he did. There are a couple of others who also do RhB cab rides and these include Lorrirocks777 who has a friend Paulo who publishes under Lorrirocks777's channel. There is also another channel with a couple on - RBDe 560. I think that between them they have covered the entire RhB.

They do, but regardless, we don't really want two different versions do we? There's loads more wagons (although I must admit I have far too many already) and locos that we might like instead, class 88 anyone

Thanks Keith. Well, broken down I guess it took about an hour and a half to put the actual plastic kit bits together and bash them appropriately. I had to add the rebates where the girder bridge fits on each side. The painting of the stone bits probably took another hour. Cutting the track and laying it using the PECO Pandrol clips on the plastistruck, and then painting it a woody and rusty brown, another couple of hours. Not too bad really. Next to to put it in place together with a Swiss style stone viaduct which will sit lower and in front of this one. The track climbs around the layout, crossing the Swi ss style viaduct first and then the fish belly girder bridge second. Something like this mock up:

And here is the finished bridge - my thanks to Andi for suggesting the Pandrol clips and using plastic for the way beams, they worked a treat.

Oh dear, that was a sorry tale! I made the mistake of opening the report only to find that it was compulsive reading. Shows what a shoddy organisation Network Rail has been at times.

Thanks guys, I'm leaning towards laying some longitudinal wood, maybe using balsa, and perhaps cutting up some spare ties I have to make sufficient chairs for the track

Can anyone tell me how track is laid across a girder bridge? I presume sleepers stop at the edge of the bridge and the rails are laid on wood? Is this both cross members and lengthways members? Any pictures would be appreciated.
I watched this video of a cab ride on the Alrberg and you can see the difference at each bridge, but the surroundings to the tracks is covered in what appears to be metal sheeting, so difficult to see what's underneath.

Sadly I suspect that you are correct. Was very interesting though. The reality is, he made it look quite easy, but I am certain that it would have been a lot harder than it looks. Those controls looked like they needed a lot of skill to get the braking curve just right.

Thanks for the suggestion @giz. With the APT I had to remove the centre of each bogies and glue the Heljan drive units in. As a result, the bogies still resembled the APT bogies, looks wise, but inside was a new drive unit. So I presume the 158 bogies do not resemble a Pendolino bogie? And if that is the case that I will have to insert the Class 158 drive units into the centre of the Pendolino bogies if that was to work?

Thanks for replying CazRail. The one I have is not DCC at the moment, although I have a sound chip for it already, I will need to convert it. My layout has a 1:24 to 1:36 gradients all the way up from the valley level to the mountain pass. I really need to convert it to DCC and give it a trial run. Most of my other locos have centre motors driving both bogies, including the Hornby APT I converted. All of these go up the slope fine. If the Pendolino goes up no problem I might not convert it, we will have to wait and see. I understand that Olivias add an extra motor to the dummy end which gives it more umph. Using the Heljan 26/7/33 chassis is a well known work around for the APT, and the only alterations are to lengthen the drive shafts. Unfortunately no-one appears to have done the Pendolino yet, so I may be going into uncharted territory.
So I would be grateful to hear from anyone who could point me towards a suitable donor chassis.

Hi everybody. Has anyone on here attempted to re-motor a Pendolino with a suitable 4 axle twin bogie central driven motor unit and if so what did you use for the donor motor?
If not, has anyone any idea what might do the job from a bogie wheelbase and wheel size perspective? I have done the Heljan 26/276/33 into an Hornby APT which went OK but this was already well documented.

I watched an APT video on YouTube the other day, and the bodywork was just like it is in this picture, looks like someones gone completely berserk with a hammer all down the sides - hopefully Hornby won't try to reproduce the ripples!!
