  2. I remember seeing rakes of the yellow liveried Presflos in the early 60's at Severn Tunnel Jn. I believe this was connected with the building of the Severn bridge, and the loads were discharged into silos in the up yard. As young spotters, we would note the PF numbers of the wagons. They were not too dirty at that time, but I would say "lightly weathered" I have a couple of yellow liveries ordered, and I will no doubt weather them, but as it was about 60 years ago my memory may need jogging. I wonder if there are any photos out there! Mike

  4. I have checked and tested it with 12v dc input on green / yellow and the power light comes on ok. Output results are rather inconclusive . It seems the red/blue and red/black give 12v according to the position of the reversing switch. In any event, I can't see any use for it without the master controller.   5. Quit correct! I have now discovered it is an add on to the LC201P panel mounted controller, so will be of no use without one of those. Thanks to all. Mike

  7. I have acquired this controller with no instructions. Does anyone have any idea why there are five wires? I presume two are 16vac input and two must be controlled output. Any help appreciated
  8. Just thought I would revive this thread, having recently purchased a 43xx at a price I could not refuse. Although I initially intended to fit dcc, at the moment I am running it on my dc only layout. I immediatley noticed the running was not great, with some surging and a general lack of any finesse in the controllability of the loco (using various makes of controller, ranging from an old H&M safety minor to a Pentroller). I deduced this was nothing to do with the pick-up arrangement, which seems to work fine. It occurred to me that whilst my kit built locos have a simple connection from pick ups to the motor, the Heljan dc blanking plate fitted in the tender has a multitude of electronic devices attached. All this electronic wizardry seems to send the track voltage on a wild goose chase on its way to the motor. I thought I would try removing said blanking plate and simply fit links from the pick-ups to the motor, making a couple of links fro .0.7mm copper wire. Result - far better controllability and much smoother running on a par with my other locos, especially considering the fairly crude gear train on this model. Being a complete Philistine when it comes to electronics, I'm sure someone will come up with a very good reason for not doing this modification, and I would be most interested to find out why these electronic components are necessary, but I am only interested in the end result.
  9. I have used a little "modellers licence" by allocating the van to Weymouth, which better suits the imaginary location of my layout. By the same token, although I have a sneaky suspicion that at the time of the photo by Mr. Beale, the van may have still carried the G. W. dark grey livery, in my model world the van has now been repainted in bauxite. Many thanks for all your comments, Regards Mike
  10. Maybe a little late, but here is a photo of the completed model. I took the cowards way with the handrails on the side of the van, most had been modified by this time but I think some vans remained with this type of handrail. The van is now rostered on the daily mixed train up from Weymouth
  11. A difficult question. If you compare a O gauge Dapol 08 shunter with similar models in OO, tho O gauge one will compare very favorably in terms of detail, robustness and price. If you are looking at the larger diesels from Heljan, I think it's not quite so clear. You will probably have to pay well over twice the price for the O gauge model, and Heljan have a history of gears splitting on some models. Some of the detail on the Heljan diesels is a bit heavy (I am particularly thinking of the steps on the bogies), but I'm not sure you could call them more robust, any well detailed model needs careful handling, whatever the scale. Of course, you will need much more space in 7mm, or a smaller layout!
  12. The Weymouth Auto prepares to depart from Melcombe Magna. Due to the non availability of a auto fitted loco, a 8750 pannier has been rostered on this turn today, necessitating a run round at the terminus. The coal merchant's lorry leaves the yard with a ton of best house coal
  13. 1405 shunts an old ex G.W.R. van with a tarpaulin covering the leaky roof.
  14. 40634 (Ex S&D No. 45) about to be turned on my latest lockdown layout. I need another figure to assist the poor chap on the windlass, who will never manage to turn the loco on his own, and I still have to weather the bridge of the turntable.
  15. If themodel is from a two or four coach set it will have the short buffers fitted on the non guards end as the sets were close coupled. A single coach is/was also available which had standard buffers and screw links at both ends.
