  1. Ruston just arrived & images taken on my suitable industrial micro, "Kidmore Boxed 2" (see other thread). Seems a perfect partner for this layout theme.
  2. I’ve no idea. As an exhibitor at more shows than I care to remember, I find there is at least one of those with spurious comments. My usual, polite, response is .... “could I have a look at your layout then? “. Often one gets the response that one hasn’t been built yet, but they are too ready to criticise. The hobby is about fun. As for the Ruston, where this thread actually started, I’m very grateful for the heads up on the loco’s performance ..... just ordered mine on basis of it. Rivet counters, don’t try and impose your inane thoughts on us who are in this for FUN !!!
  3. Luke. One thing I can’t find is the size of your excellent layout. It looks a single point job, my kind of layout (!), but what space is given over to scenic and fiddle please.
  4. Progress update images. Ground scenic work now underway & basic hedge structure installed to link with photo background; I will add a few broken bits to break up uniformity. The shed is simply a Bachmann RTP with added barge boards from coffee stirrers. The loading bay is made with the same stirrers on a foamboard former. Small shipping container now painted but will be adding more containers as view block to fiddle stick.
  5. Simply search this forum for “box file”, you’ll get countless ideas for what’s achievable in a small space. Or go large to 28 x 8” which will fit in a Really Useful Box wrapping paper container costing about £10.
  6. I take it out & operate it on the closed box. No problem to take out at all; I can totally recommend the baseboard kits.
  7. Have been able to progress this offering to about 95% completion; still awaiting a couple of bits from China however. Images attached ..... you just have to remember this is only 28 x 8" ! So happy with this one, have started a second on a Scale Model Scenery baseboard for my HO scale stock ..... see "Kidmore Valley Railroad" (this Forum) & a third is in my head !!
  8. Thank you. The backscene has been cut to fit from ID Backscenes premium range. Trust this helps.
  9. Bit of progress over the weekend. Electrics, such as actually needed, completed; a grass bank added ...... I have an aversion to totally flat layouts .... & every thing apart from the hardstanding given a coating of earth paint. Not yet firmed up on any structures although probable that a couple of shipping containers will be used as a view block to the fiddle stick.
  10. Thank you for the compliment re my Kidmore site & layouts. I’ll watch the development of your N gauge layout with great interest.
  11. Stubby. Could I trouble you to publish a track plan for Port Byhan please. I assume it’s two box files & a traverser but it should fit into my favoured Really Useful Box at 28x8”. Thanks.
  12. Certainly different ! Would you be able to post an image of the four boxes joined together ?
  13. Unashamedly lifting a trackplan from "Sheepyard Creek" (this forum) & having an assortment of USA stock for "Kidmore Fork V2", the idea for yet another layout was born. Again this uses a Scale Model Scenery modular baseboard which is to be fitted in a Really Useful Box (RUB). Layout size therefore is 28" x 8". This provides a sufficient space for a three siding, one point, fiddlestick operation & will be my fifth layout in a RUB box. The theme for Kidmore Valley is an American Shortline Railroad. These are invariably served by a secondhand loco obtained from a mainline Class 1 operator. By default, this permits in modelling terms the use of any liveried stock from essentially any US railroad......unlimited scope then ! Initial images show track laid & given a coating of Railmatch track grime. Once dry, this will be ballasted & scenic treatment started.
  14. Sure is safe, but mine is dirty !! See you on the circuit.
  15. Just started getting the car scrapyard sorted. A couple of images. The crane is a Corgi Trackside item suitably weathered. Probably have to get some more DAS clay before I can continue.
  16. Managed to get a few bits done. Low relief (very) backscene building now completed & grass bank given its first coat of "grass". Intend to add some really overgrown stuff. Scrap yard office added, a Bachmann RTP picked up s/h. Work now continues with creating the actual scrapyard but still awaiting some bits.
  17. Bit of progress since last post. Track now ballasted & weathered using Railmatch Track Dirt. Background buildings & the loading bay have been given a coat of car primer, courtesy the £ Shop ! The slightly raised area, I'm not a fan of totally flat boards, between the two sidings (seen in white) is awaiting a plaster bandage coating. Unsure whether the mangled coaches are going to be a fit, seem a bit big for this layout & may well be returned to spares box. Apart from track, nothing as yet finalised !!
  18. One further question please. Is the “display” siding linked to the fiddle extension or is it simply to display stock ?
  19. Alex, thanks for update. So, excluding fiddle, it really is a contender for a further Really Useful Box wrapping paper box project adopting a Scale Model Scenery baseboard kit. I’ll add to my list !
  20. Love this, given its only 71cm in length it would be ideal for a Really Useful Box wrapping paper box. Could you possibly post a full length image of the layout and also a track plan. It appears there is simply one point plus a “display” siding. Is that correct ?
  21. Having got the bug of building OO layouts in Really Useful Box wrapping paper boxes, had another idea so now embarking on my fourth. Rather than build my usual baseboard of 6mm MDF on a softwood frame, decided to try a baseboard kit from Scale Model Scenery (SMS) which is designed specifically for said box. Word of warning, SMS recommend a dry run of parts .... definitely needed, but once done simplicity itself & a parts are a perfect fit. The theme this time will be a scrapyard served simply by a Pug or an 0-6-0. Image shows basic thoughts so far. Track has been laid on cork templates from Model Railway Solutions, always my preferred option. At this stage track has not been stuck down & obviously awaits ballasting. Platform with the grounded van has been placed to provide measurement for wagon clearance. The white area has been cut to approximate size for the intended main scrapyard. Previous attempts may be found at "Kidmore Boxed".
  22. Many thanks both for your input. Particularly, this time at least, want to use just the one box so the very first Anyrail production would certainly fit the bill..
  23. Having built three OO gauge layouts in 22L Really Useful Boxes and being totally sold on these containers for layouts, I am struggling to come up with a new track plan to fit the 29 x 8.5” space of my newly acquired box. My previous efforts may be found under “Kidmore Boxed” (originally built in one but expanded to two boxes) and “Dead End”. Thought perhaps a fresh pair of eyes on the subject would help my mental block ! Any suggestions greatly received. My partner has suggested a sea wall or dockside but can’t see how that could fit the restricted space.
