  1. The box stated LMS 42' Brake - in fact it appears to be a LMS 42' baggage van. So don't always believe what you read on the tin! Box only contained body shell & one end. Made up a chassis from some brass channel - and floor plus missing end from made from plasticard. The parts box on workbench provided 2 bogie kits (£6 ea) and axles/wheels from 'Home of O Gauge' so, we now have a rolling model. More detail required, before final painting etc to complete - see latest picture in gallery.

  2. Album also contains picture of early construction of what I believe to be LMS 42' brake. Purchased box of 'bits & pieces' from 2nd hand stall at local show for £5. Box had LMS 42' brake scribbled on lid, have assembled body - one end was missing & fabricated missing end from plasticard and soldered together brass channel for a chassis. Now need to identify vehicle & obtain GA drawing/pictures/info to complete. Could this possibly be a 6-wheel vehicle? Any information would be appreciated.

    Regards & thanks.

  3. Back in the shed now that weather is warmer! Decided to make a start on the planned coaches. Have assembled my first 7mm Ian Kirk kit - LMS 57' open third, which has gone together quite well. Have used the extruded aluminium floor sections, which has now left me with the plasticard floors & other bits left over from the kits. Will use these to complete the aluminium shells purchased previously. Pictures to follow shortly. Does anyone have pictures or drawings of the undersides?

    Thanks & regards,

    P.

  4. When constructing the shed, I installed speakers in the roof and also plan provide some sort of sound. I like the sky - very realistic - how did you do it, paint or is it printed?

Now that the cold weather has receeded, some modelling might even be attempted! A friend uses a wood burning stove in his shed - however, his shed is an old shipping container. I'm unsure about a stove in wooden shed though - but need to find a suitable heating solution. Any ideas guys - low cost & cheap to run....

  5. Parts donated by fellow Guild member will enable me to complete my loco for £100 and leave sufficient body/tender parts for a further 3 x 4f's! Just need to purchase wheels & motors. Prelimary work on the tenders has now started - with one tender, which had arrived in 5 pieces, being repaired and re-assembled. Careful rubbing down with wet/dry has removed old paint and the repair is now totally invisible. A further tender, in whitemetal has also been strengthened with plasticard false bottom & intermediate supports and the next stage will be the fabrication of hand rails. Meanwhile the only two white metal sandboxes have been copied from thick soft plastic (similar to plasticard) and will have pipework added frfom brass wire for all of the loco chassis. The nest stage of the loco body conversion - boiler replacement, requires a visit to local B&Q to purchase the waste pipe tubing - £2 approx for 1.5 metres.

    Pictures to follow shortly.

    Regards,

    Paul Boot.

  6. Original chassis has now been stripped down and wheels test fitted to the new chassis, which appears to be square and sits nicely on the track. Just need to clean the original chassis ready for another set of wheels. Will take both chassis along to club on Tuesday evening for progress report. Viewing the Guild slide show of 'Lima Conversions' on DVD whilst awaiting the package of promised goodies from fellow Guild member.

  7. Fellow Guild member has just emailed me - various loco & tender bodies available for cost of postage. Could end up with a fleet of 4f''s - nice when a plan comes together! Just goes to show what being a member of the Gauge O Guild is all about.

First chassis now constructed from etched brass kit and tender modifications also started. Pictures have been added to my gallery. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/gallery/album/9526/1153-lima-4f-conversion/

  8. Thanks for comment. Temporary unemplyment has given me a little more time to work on layout - will update gallery with more pics.

No further pictures yet - however, have been helping with refurbishing my daughters new shop. Redundant fittings are now in my shed! Have installed a proper ring main above workbench - so no more trailing leads & multi sockets. Electrified track (not Peco)! with spotlights should be installed over weekend and additional shelving for more books to go up next week. Happy days!

  9. Hi Paul, Sorry to bear the bad news, but it's not possible to solder aluminium, even welding it is a specialist thing, I think it's to do with it oxidising at relatively low temperatures i.e. heat it and before it gets to molten you get lots of oxides forming that stop you making a clean joint, so it has to be welded in a 'protective atmosphere' of inert gases.

Anyway, if joining alloy parts I would use an epoxy resin glue, make sure the fit of parts is spot-on first, then hold them in place with whatever; clamps, weights, blu-tac et al, then add a fast setting epoxy and warm it with a hair dryer to encourage it to flow and fill joints. I'm sure others will also add their advice. Make sure you post some pictures for us.

    Have fun

    Liddy

Thanks for the info - somehow I thought that might be the case. Shopping trip then for the epoxy resin glue. Regards, P
  10. Hi Paul, nice looking layout, what size is your shed ??
Hi John, Shed is approx 20'x12' and was built by a builder friend, to fit odd shaped corner in garden. One end does have slight taper because of converging fenceline. Cost was about half quoted prices for bought shed. As I needed plenty of storage space for garden equipment and I like to view layouts at eye level - layout is 52" above floor. Just about right to enable a workbench to be installed across full width at opp end to door. Will update gallery with more pics as work proceeds - next job is to paint the sky and sort out the backscene. Trying to merge buildings & backscene, pos with 4mm scale to create illusion of distance. Watch this space!
