  1. One added bonus discovered yesterday - chassis from original 'Lima' body was wrong, discarded it and then realised after re-checking measurements, that it's actually from a 'Jinty'. So, there could be another project on the horizon!
  2. Photo album related to this blog can also be viewed on RMWeb: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/gallery/album/9526/1153-lima-4f-conversion/
  3. Lateral thinking: Shed was definately too cold to work in during winter, so have built extension to desk in study. Space for more work files and of course a ready made workbench for those cold winter evenings.

  4. Busy planning this year's club exhibition. Looking for oo & O gauge layouts for Oct show in north Birmingham - Anyone interested?

  6. When constructing the shed, I installed speakers in the roof and also plan provide some sort of sound. I like the sky - very realistic - how did you do it, paint or is it printed? Now that the cold weather has receeded, some modelling might even be attempted! A friend uses a wood burning stove in his shed - however, his shed is an old shipping container. I'm unsure about a stove in wooden shed though - but need to find a suitable heating solution. Any ideas guys - low cost & cheap to run....
  7. Profile looks a bit blank mate - need some pics & topics etc....!

  8. Interesting collection of pictures - lots of detail for the modeller. Anymore in your camera?

  9. Internet research has thrown up pictures/GA drawing on 'Photobucket' - if I can finish DIY project, might just get back to shed for the Lima 4f conversions & A3 build. http://media.photobucket.com/image/lms+4f/dirty_numb_angel_boi/British+Steam+Drawings/LMS4F0-6-0.jpg.xhtml PB.
  10. This is also not really my era, but if you have a look at some Cambrian pictures in my gallery, it might give you some inspiration to finish the loco. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/gallery/album/9526/1047-oswestry-loco-works/ Maybe I should do a bit of spring cleaning in my shed! Regards, PB
  11. Parts donated by fellow Guild member will enable me to complete my loco for £100 and leave sufficient body/tender parts for a further 3 x 4f's! Just need to purchase wheels & motors. Prelimary work on the tenders has now started - with one tender, which had arrived in 5 pieces, being repaired and re-assembled. Careful rubbing down with wet/dry has removed old paint and the repair is now totally invisible. A further tender, in whitemetal has also been strengthened with plasticard false bottom & intermediate supports and the next stage will be the fabrication of hand rails. Meanwhile the only two white metal sandboxes have been copied from thick soft plastic (similar to plasticard) and will have pipework added frfom brass wire for all of the loco chassis. The nest stage of the loco body conversion - boiler replacement, requires a visit to local B&Q to purchase the waste pipe tubing - £2 approx for 1.5 metres. Pictures to follow shortly. Regards, Paul Boot.
  12. Original chassis has now been stripped down and wheels test fitted to the new chassis, which appears to be square and sits nicely on the track. Just need to clean the original chassis ready for another set of wheels. Will take both chassis along to club on Tuesday evening for progress report. Viewing the Guild slide show of 'Lima Conversions' on DVD whilst awaiting the package of promised goodies from fellow Guild member.
  13. Fellow Guild member has just emailed me - various loco & tender bodies available for cost of postage. Could end up with a fleet of 4f''s - nice when a plan comes together! Just goes to show what being a member of the Gauge O Guild is all about. First chassis now constructed from etched brass kit and tender modifications also started. Pictures have been added to my gallery. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php/gallery/album/9526/1153-lima-4f-conversion/

No further pictures yet - however, have been helping with refurbishing my daughters new shop. Redundant fittings are now in my shed! Have installed a proper ring main above workbench - so no more trailing leads & multi sockets. Electrified track (not Peco)! with spotlights should be installed over weekend and additional shelving for more books to go up next week. Happy days!
  15. Started work on converting a pair of Lima 4f loco's - first chassis built. Second chassis 'acquired' already built - just needs refurbishing. Have one Lima tender in bits box - just need a second. Both bodies being modified as per John Middleton's article in Gauge O Guild gazette vol 13, no 12. The plan is to produce a 4f for under a ton(£100). Now trying to source low cost parts etc to complete the project. Will update with pictures/information etc as project develops - see also Gauge O Guild Forum entry - /forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1505">My link</FONT>
  16. 8 x Layouts: 2 x N gauge, 5 x OO gauge, 1 x O gauge. 4 x Traders, including Hobbyrail, Manor Models etc. Vintage Trains stand with Les Ross. Entrance £3 adults, £2 child/concessions. Further details & location map on clubs webpage - http://birminghammod...club.clubbz.com
  17. Thanks guys for the information. May consider using aluminium floors/roofs and combine scratch built sides in plasticard. Then use aluminium sides with roofs/floors from plasticard - twice as many coaches from the same number of aluminium components and cheaper too ... ! Regards, P
  18. Thanks for the info - somehow I thought that might be the case. Shopping trip then for the epoxy resin glue. Regards, P
  19. This might seem like a silly question - however, being a novice builder - is it possible to solder aluminium? I have been accumulating various items to scratch build coaches, including aluminium sides and extruded roofs and floors. If not - what would be the best method of joining these parts together? Any ideas greatly appreciated. Regards, P

Hi John, Shed is approx 20'x12' and was built by a builder friend, to fit odd shaped corner in garden. One end does have slight taper because of converging fenceline. Cost was about half quoted prices for bought shed. As I needed plenty of storage space for garden equipment and I like to view layouts at eye level - layout is 52" above floor. Just about right to enable a workbench to be installed across full width at opp end to door. Will update gallery with more pics as work proceeds - next job is to paint the sky and sort out the backscene. Trying to merge buildings & backscene, pos with 4mm scale to create illusion of distance. Watch this space!
