They weren't top and tailed they were the famous "Disco" trains with 27s at both ends but with both locos powered up and running in multiple.  The MU signals ran through the coach lighting circuits which caused them to flicker rather like a 70s disco.  Later Class 47/7s were created for these services with 100 MPH speed and MU equipment to run with a MK2 brake converted to a DVT. Later more 47/7s were created 15 I believe. They were painted "Scotrail" livery  (Intercity red stripe except with a blue stripe with scotrail branding.)   Incidentally a further 47, Charles Rennie Mackintosh a 47/4 also had its red stripe over painted with blue, not very well, it looked like someone had bought a tin of Dulux and  brushed it on.

I really don't know of any topping and tailing of passenger trains with a dead loco at the rear prior to about 2000.

No, your getting confused. The earlier description is correct.

The 27's were in multiple using a 27 pin cable and regulating air pipe either end of 6 mk2 coaches.

These were completely replaced by the 47/7 , mk3 coaches and mk2 dbso using the Brush 2 wire tdm system via the coach lighting rch cables. They were the ones that made the interior lights flicker .

Best exhibition I have been to for some time - good selection of layouts and the local/secondhand traders and some specialist traders and demos without being swamped by the box . I assume SVMRC have upped the size of this in response to the demise of the big event in Nottingham.

We thank you for your kind comments and glad you really enjoyed the show. We have been at this size now for 3 years and has nothing to do with the Nottingham Shows current size.

We had a very good show with numbers up, bucking the trend of recent years.

We would like to thank all those that came to see us, A big thank you to the exhibitors for sharing their layouts with us , and to the traders and Demo stands that supported us.

    See you all next year.

  6. Did staff doing rostering not have their 'own' pool of locos to pick from? Was that not enough to prevent them being accidentally used elsewhere?

I'm guessing the test train locos had some kind of plug and socket arrangement for an intercom between the cab and the train, as it was often necessary to ask the driver to speed up, slow down or stop.

They were hired out on purpose, not accidentally. That's why they were renumbered into the 479xx series, to easily identify the owning sector.

As for communication between loco and train, temporary cables were attached running the length of the loco to train. In latter years, back to back radios were used.

  8. Both the vp's and mtu's are derated so that the maximum rpm is 1500.This is the maximum speed of the alternator. The amount of load of the auxiliaries / train supply has no bearing on the output of amps to the traction motors. These are separate windings on the alternator.

    Vp185 produces 2282hp at 1500rpm. Mtu in r41config for rail traction produces 2280hp at 1500rpm I believe.

They both have significant more torque than the old valenta's, one of which can still be heard in the prototype power car.
