Certainly true of diesels (can't confirm or deny the nickname, not 'my' region), although when the Class 91 electrics were modified and renumbered 91 011 became 91 111. 31 111 had probably been despatched by then though (I know very little about '91s'..........and now I come to think about it I don't think I ever actually saw one!!)

There will only ever be one Sticks; all others are mere imposters.....

All are very different from each other. Even as Class 37/5s - their previous iteration - they were basically each unique once you factor in the donor Class 37/0 (nine were split headcode, three were centre, and the 12 were drawn from both EE and RSH batches with all three roof types). On conversion to 37/5s some received split nose grilles, others split and single-piece grilles, while the Eurostar upgrades introduced another level of modifications that were slowly and not consistently removed by DRS. DRS also made their own changes, although the light clusters and top headlight that are characteristic of the fleet were actually only applied to nine of the 12. The other trio retained their final Eurostar configuration, albeit with the removal of the spotlights. Post-DRS their new owners, such as Europhoenix, have made their own alterations! They are a massive challenge to represent in model form!

This is exactly why you should ignore all this new-fangled nonsense and stick to the simplicity of 309 items in banger blue..... ;-)

Well I was right this is a mine field, so easy to get caught out as l appear to here done so here. I had set my period as 1989, Ness viaduct incident and the introduction of 156s, looks like l ll need to spread my time line again lol  Mid 87 to mid 89.............. yes l could make that work !

No - 262 had class 37 bogies; Bachmann's base model of 260 correctly doesn't. Rainbow's model appears to be wrong - unless 262 had non-37 bogies for a brief period? But I can't find any photos of it while in LL.

True, and then not true !! In the mid-eighties 37260 had cast bogies as per the Bachmann model, but by 1987 it had a set of fabricated ones. The class 37 data site lists an E exam at Inverness in August 1987, and I suspect that is when they got swapped.

    Typically I'm modelling late eighties.....

... I did also look at a 37012 Loch Rannoch also on the Kernow web site, to convert into 37114 Dunrobin Castle, but its marker light is mounted in the middle of the gangway doors, which if moved to the top of the nose as per prototype, would leave a neat hole and the problem of lighting it in its new position.

It seems there is no easy path here, Maybe Mr Bachmann will announce more liveries and version by mid year (Suspect not likely at the rate the current 35 xxx series  models are selling?

37012 is also not a suitable start point for 37114 as the roof finishing is different. (D6700 to D6742 (inc. 37012)) were double rivetted, most other split box ones were single riveted and a small batch D6799 to D6818 (inc. 37114) were welded. All centre headcode ones were welded.

I heard that the Bachmann factory only has a certain capacity, so this was taken up by the Class 31 production, hence no more Class 37s for the moment. I'm 100% sure sales have been affected by the Accurascale release, but they have chosen their models carefully and opting for the ever popular Scottish locos is a good move. 37012/043/201/260/262/371/401/401/418/423 all have some degree of Scottish pedigree.

I’d say 08 and 20 are the other big flagship diesels (ignoring the HST which is in the iconic category). Bachmann have the 20 market cornered, however it does feel like a new 08 is only a matter of time, despite the existing Hornby and Bachmann efforts already being excellent. Question is, who will get there first?

Most diesel modellers manage to justify a "fleet" of larger locos. Not many will have a "fleet" of 08s. So I would be surprised if any manufacturer was hoping to make a huge splash and huge profits with a brand new 08 model.

Do you know any link that shows images of class 37 loco types and shows the differences between them?

    Thanks

This one is a good starting point...

    https://www.class37.co.uk/

Pip Dunn's book "British Rail Main Line Locomotives Specification Guide" is a comprehensive guide to all BR diesel Locomotives detail differences.

Flickr is very useful when you've selected your loco.

Remember  these things have been around for 50+ years and things change; a lot.

Yes 114 was the only one with it mounted on a short bracket above the nose . I think it may be a long time before we see anymore car headlight models with the long list of other 37s on the ‘to do’ list .

It would be nice if both manufacturers picked something a little more mundane that could be more easily reworked . So far both sides keep producing quite bespoke models. I guess that’s the price we pay for super accurate models though .

    What is mundane?

The split boxes versions have three different roof styles, two different cantrail grill types, more than three different door/nose configurations, a mass of headlight positions (and types), era related boiler port options and that's before you even start talking about liveries and variations within "the same" liveries !!!!

A least the centre box versions are a little more "standard" with only  a handful different headboard/lamp brackets position  combinations, handrails or not, blue star positions, liveries, bogies........the list goes on.

I'd guess there is barely double figures that would be a straight re-number job from one to another.

    What fun :-)

Does anyone know if '051 had a partial repaint at some point, as the photos I have seen show 7 x blue metals sector chevron markings next to No.2 end cab and the model only has 6 blue chevrons???

Crikey, you're right. The 1:1 scale 37051 had seven chevrons on both sides (adjacent to the doors) and the model only has six.

Interestingly, the model of 37026 has (correctly) seven distribution chevrons. The metals chevrons should be finer than depicted on the 37051 model.

Trainspotter of the week goes to eefitter !!!

  10. I have an Accurascale 37051 (dcc ready) which I would like to swap for a 37026 or 37027 (dcc ready).

I grabbed the 37051 because it was available, but then found a sound fitted one, so now the first one is surplus to requirements.

It's not been run as I currently don't have a layout, I just took it out of the box to gaze longingly at it. So it's basically mint condition.

So if you'd like to swap, let me know.

Mmmmm...... Since announcements of the second batch.... I have been snooping around the internet for DCWA Class 37's with the same details configuration as 37258, with a view to a renumber...With a username like Torbay Express, you can use more than one DCWA Class 37.  That then tempted me to look at 37140 -  when going through the none split headcode 37's.   That don't appear to have much meat on the bone for renumberings either for anyone with an Eastern persuasion...

For 37258 DCWA re-numbering, my first port of call would be 37263 and 37264. Maybe 37142?

As for re-numbering options for a BR blue 37140 ; if you go past the Engineering general all over grey and into the Dutch period, full banger blue locos were few and far between. The man with the paintbrush certainly earned his money over that period !!

37170 was quite a late hanger-on (at least to July 1990), but was solidly Scottish.
