  1.

Just an update on the old "Planot" Loco. She's been working for a few years now in Australia, where the new owners have done a little work to help it suit local operating conditions. There are now hand-rails along the hood, new door handles on the louvred side panels, and larger buffers for shunting duties.

I also took the opportunity to correct an issue with the weight balance. She was a little "tail-heavy" and had a slight tendency to pull a wheelie if the driver was a little heavy-handed with the throttle.

May I ask what the mods are you carried out to improve the balance?.

    John.

  2. I wonder would anyone out there have a copy of Railway Bylines vol20 no'3 February 2015 they would like to part with?

    John.

    Now Sorted, Thanks.

  3. Hi John,

The wagon with taller sides was labelled "Home of O Gauge", the shorter one was "connoisseur models".

The castings on the connoisseur kit weren't great, indicating the molds were probably on the way out.

Both were ebay purchase and I don't believe either is still available.

Sorry, that probably doesn't help much.

Hi Argos, thanks for the heads up anyway, thing is you never know what's going to turn up on second hand sales stands.

    John.

  4. If I remember Connoisseur produced white metal kits, before Jim's ownership, these went to Oldbury, the Home of O gauge and then in to the ABS black hole. I'm working on some dead buffered wagons for my own layout, at the moment, I was going to get them printed but if people want them I will produce them as a kit.

    Marc

I'd be interested in one of each as well please Marc. Please don't move too quickly though I'm part way through a potential house move!

    John

  5. Just to show I've not just been spending my time on 2mm scale pipe dreams the Easter break has been spent assembling a couple of white metal, dumb buffered wagon kits.:-

For the 1894 time period a lot of the wagon stock would still be dumb buffered.

I picked up these kits on ebay, one recently, the other has been "maturing" for a year or so.

Hopefully these will help to redress the balance.

The full brake now has an interior so will get primed with the wagons.

May I enquire as to the maker of the dumb buffered wagon kits please.

    John Bruce.

  6. Hi Argos.........thanks for your comments on Alex. Yard.......the layout lives on in Jim McGeown's (Connoisseur Models) workshop and forms the background for his models on his website. I have a few snaps of the layout......somewhere.......I'll see what I can find , it's been nearly 20 years since the layout was on the exhibition circuit......frightening .

If you ever get round to building a Crewe Goods/tank one thing to look out for is the clearance between the leading crank pin and the inside of the outer frame. On the real thing it's decidedly fag paper so on the model I increased the distance between the two outer frames by 1mm either side for clearance.

Keep up the good work on the Taddington branch

    John

John, glad to hear that Alexander yard is still going strong. I was lucky enough to see the layout at the pre-grouping show they did at Chippenham a good few years ago.

    Thank you John.

  7. Morning all

Having finally moved into the new house in early November all modelling has been rather curtailed, as well as regular RMweb visits, as we are still waiting for BT Openreach to complete the job to connect us to the outside world! We are now on our third 'completion date' (Jan 10th!) but I don't hold out much hope so things may be a bit quiet for some time to come.

Once I straighten things out at home I hope to get the layout up in January before its' first outing to Guildford on January 22nd and Southampton Jan 28-29th. Also in the Spring plans are afoot to get a shed installed in the garden that may see the re-emergence of Exford Park in a revised form.

So whilst on line at work I'll take the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and a big thank you to all who have assisted on the road with Tidworth this past year and hopefully the coming busy year for exhibitions!

    All the best

Well done on the move Ian, are you still in the village....sorry town.

See you at Southampton, I'll be there with my small EM layout....probably in the dining hall!

    John.

  8. Continued confessions of a locoholic....

I'm still building the EE battery electric loco. Hope to mark and cut out the body parts later today. The footplate structure was done a couple of weeks ago. Working on the details.

In the  meantime, an impulse purchase, this 85A models Hunslet 15" 0-6-0ST came up and I didnt take long to think about it, they don't make them any more. I have always liked this design as more compact and attractive than the later 'Austerity'. The NCB North Yorks area painted theirs in red, South Yorks were lined green, so we'll see.

Hopefully it will arrive towards the end of the week.

    Dava

Must say I'm impressed with the motor bogie, well done. Also well done on the "impulse" buy, as you say a nicer design than the later Austerity.

    Regards John.

  9. Some fine bore brass/copper tube is soldered across the bearing and the frame, cut each side of the bearing and a length of wire inserted. On the 'moving' bearings, the tube across the bearing is omitted to leave room for compensation movement.  I'll photo all this when I come to it.

You can see a similar installation on my Fowler Diesel chassis on this thread -

Ah yes, I think I can see what you mean. A neat solution to the otherwise"fixed" axle.

    Thanks John.
