coombe junction - moorswater - window(s) of opportunity...

Update - Further to Mikkel's observations about visibility in the dries area, this evening I decided to pursue an idea that I had sketched out last year, as it had also been on my mind in the early planning stages of this board. I always wanted to model a snapshot of the dries area but was conscious that a lot of it would be hidden, as opposed to the excellent Wheal Elizabeth where the dries building faces the audience. With this in mind I set about creating a small 'letterbox' in the front fascia to give small vistas as a train arrived, especially for small (and big ;)) children. Its all been crafted in grey card at present but will be clad more neatly in stone sheet etc in the coming few weeks.

Here is my initial sketch from last year...

And although the dries has now been mapped out in a bit more detail, here is the solution...

blogentry-3290-073534600 1290122769_thumb.jpg

which gives this...

blogentry-3290-091165400 1290122868_thumb.jpg

It's not intended to show everything but I thought it might be an interesting snapshot from a differing viewpoint...

On the subject of openings, I also cut out the one at the rear of the dries to allow access to the mini traverser and turning of locos as I will DG one end and detail the other. The openings are concealed beneath the buildings and there is space to hold a loco, but actually the ergonomics have been based upon the size of a stash of jelly babies courtesy of Mark and Steve's recommendations on operating procedures when exhibiting :P

It looks something like this from behind the scenes...

and poking the camera in a bit closer will give a few other hidden photo opportunities I hope...

The last opening cut this evening, was an idea that I saw Hugh Flynn had used on one of his recent layouts, namely the incorporation of a photo display screen. Most of the ones I have seen have horrible chunky frames, curves and bevels etc so I managed to sell the idea to my wife, that if I found a slick black minimal design, it would be a welcome addition to our apartment...and something I could borrow occasionally when exhibiting the layout :D This could then display a running slideshow of sketches, research of the prototype, construction and other reference material for the layout rather than string a 'washing line' of information along the front....which can sometimes detract from a layout.

The idea was to incorporate it in my blank front fascia panel screening the fiddleyard something along these lines...

blogentry-3290-064115500 1290123520_thumb.jpg

and this was the model found...a bargain a €90 I thought...

blogentry-3290-022113400 1290123916_thumb.jpg

where the frame justs drops in behind the fiddleyard fascia on a series of card/foamboard runners and can be easily removed...

with a nice sharp edge to the screen

That's all folks...

Exciting stuff Pete, loving the close up views provided by your letter box slot. Plus the photo frame is a nice touch, a very adaptable piece of kit. Keep up the good work mate B)

Thanks Bryn - am really starting to enjoy the construction of this third board which will hopefully be a nice gritty counter point to the other more rural end of the layout.

Hello Pete :)

Excellent modelling as usual. I think adding a digital frame is a fantastic idea as it will add another point of interest to the layout and its something that I have planned for Highclere at some point in the future. Hopefully it will keep people interested when things arent moving on the layout. My plan was to use it to show pictures of the prototype with a bit of history of the line with maybe even a bit of video, it certinaly creates plenty of options.

Missy :)

-Missy-, hi

Thanks for the kind words.

I guess the frames are an easier alternative to a computer screen these days (but with limitations) and much the same as you, I will aim to show the prototype, evolution, construction and possibly train movements as they happen.

Am also thinking of making the break to DCC with a sprog, then I can control the locos using the iphone :D ...even better would be to swap out the digital frame for an ipad and control the trains from the front...now there's a thought ;)

Some excellent ideas there, I really like the idea of being able to see the train through the dries. And the digital photoframe would, I think, be very well recieved at exhibitions.

Looking very tasty Pete,

Being able to see 'inside' the layout is a super idea and one that will give a great perspective to the viewers; I also like the digital picture frame concept - that could be a bit of a trend setter I think (if the domestic authorities allow you to borrow it...) :) .

How about trying jelly beans in addition to the jelly babies - you could bring in loads of 'beans', swap them over when the wagon is out of sight, and the drive out the wagons loaded with the 'babies'... ...or if done the other way round, you could call it a 'jelly baby crushing plant' .

Keep it coming please

All exciting stuff Pete. I do like the front "letterbox" view port - is there room to incorporate a mechanical loader & workmen there?

Just seen you status comment re: contacting John Vaughan - that could open up access to a whole load more information, hope you don't get overwhelmed!

Thoughts of DCC with an iPad touch control - now you're getting very advanced....B)

Halfwit - Many thanks - I had wondered about using mirrors but for me they only work well in certain contexts...and this isn't one of them!

Steve - Thanks also - I like your thinking - now you know what is under the clay hoods and inside the CDA's

Here's the script...Operator in Fiddleyard prepares train loaded with JB's - Dispatch to Moorswater dries (3.3metres travel distance) - Moorswater operator receives train and shunts into hidden area - loads removed and administered - empties dispatched to fiddleyard - audience none the wiser...repeat process...fun this playing trains lark ;)

Rich - Thanks too - Workmen yes...Mechanical loader...hmmm...sounds like a scratchbuild job in this scale.

Yes, the JV link is something I have been searching for years - after all, it was his photo in Modern Railways Pictorial 1980something of a class 25 on clay hoods at Coombe Junction looking towards the viaduct, that still inspires me to complete this layout...and he was happy when I told him so!

Finally thought I had better embrace the DCC technology...after all...I do like me gadgets :D

I like the idea of the screen Pete, that looks very neat. The third board is coming on well. I'm not totally convinced on the window to look through the works, but that's a personal thing and it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

Thanks Kris - Fair comment on the letterbox...if it is not a success I can always 'brick it up'

Just to second all the comments above :)

I'm sure a display screen will attract the younger audience in particular - they seem glued to them every where they go these days

Pete, that's a brilliant solution with the "letter-box". Idea immediately stolen and notes taken for future use :) .

I also really like the idea with the photo display screen. In fact, I can't help thinking such a screen offers som interesting backscene opportunities too.

Mark - Thank you - Agreed on the screens...it's meant to compliment the layout rather than be the main focus...otherwise, for me, it's a bit like going to see a band at a stadium gig, and then spending time watching the big screens...rather than the band themselves

Mikkel - Many thanks also and for your comments which revitalised said letterbox. It had been on my mind last year, hence the doodles, but when I started finally constructing the dries buildings last week, it went clean out of my head...a little hacking with a scalpel and a razor saw and a large glass of Rioja managed to rerail things again :D
