BLOSS
Has onyone else experienced the problem with the Bachmann Class 08's, whereby the elevated plastic rodding which runs alongside the top of the bodyside panels has snapped off? Has anyone tried replacing it with thin wire? And is the Hornby class 08 (not the Railroad version obviously) generally considered a superior model? BigAndy
I think this question would be answered better and more relevantly in the Modelling Questions thread, maybe a nice Mod could move it over? cheers Andy
royaloak
Do you mean the top handrail?
BLOSS
Sorry I did look for the most appropriate part of the forum to post this but obviously not close enough! yes if a Mod could move it accordingly that would be great. Sorry!
BLOSS
Yes the handrail(s), they are made out of very thin plastic. I have had two Bachmann 08's and I try and handle them carefully but the same thing has happened to both, which is frustrating and ruins the look of the loco. I am tempted to go with Hornby for my next class 08 purchase.
34theletterbetweenB&D
Those handrails are plastic mouldings on both Bachmann and Hornby 08s! You simply have to avoid handling the model at this location, pick it up by the footplate. There has been a fairly lengthy thread on the comparative qualities of the two models, but you will need to use the advanced search feature to find it. Mechanisms pretty much equivalent, Bachmann has a sprung centre axle good for pick up reliability, Hornby, finer detail rendering
bazjones1711
Regarding the handrails , I've replaced all of mine with 0.33 wire , not for those with not a lot of patience !
BLOSS
Thanks Bazjones1711, that's exactly what I was trying to find out! I take it it was quite difficult to do then?
bazjones1711
Thanks Bazjones1711, that's exactly what I was trying to find out! I take it it was quite difficult to do then? Not too difficult , just take your time , take off the old handrails, drill small holes where appropriate , the three supporting pieces for the long handrail can be fitted from inside the body by means of small lengths of brass rod , a small amount of super glue or epoxy will hold them, then paint ! Hope that explains it , although I've got 7 class 08 I've only done one so far ! Edited November 8, 2017 by bazjones1711

rob D2
The Hornby 08/9 is a great model, I had one. The only issue for me is that it's " overdetailed " with too many added little bits that I kept knocking off. I now have a Bachmann 08 which is pretty good , as all the more recent ones are and very robust in comparison
w124bob
I like the wire hand rail replacement, Bachmann 08623 is a bit special as it was a Coalville regular and 1 of 3 based out of Burton on Trent before the fueling point closed. Bachmann have also done more variations of door hinge and cabinet combos. So I tend to buy both depending on what loco I actually want. Here is my photo of 08623 at Coalville in the summer of 1980. And at Toton after airbrakes have been fitted

Just that the model I want (DB shenker) is cheaper with Bachmann.
Black 5 Bear
IMHO,The Hornby version is far superior in detail and running. You pays your money and takes your choice !
RMweb Gold Roy Langridge Posted November 23, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 23, 2017 (edited) IMHO,The Hornby version is far superior in detail and running. You pays your money and takes your choice !Very much so. I have both and when you sit them side by side the differences are obvious, and in Hornby’s favour. I have fitted lights and sound to one of my Hornby 08s and it seems far easier than with the Bachmann version. Trev520
I seem to have lost one of the crank pins on my model. Has anyone had a similar problem? Is there an alternative or are spares available?

I agree, I wanted a couple of Blue Pullman bogies which were not listed as spare parts but 30 seconds on the phone and they are winging their way to me, polite and excellent service. Trev1073
Guys thanks for your suggestions. I contacted the Service Dept and they have confirmed that they are not held as a spare part, they would normally supply complete wheelset with coupling rods etc (£21). However they had a spare from a "reclaimed loco" that they could let me have for a small cost (£2.50). I would agree that the service dept is very good & prompt in responding.
