RMweb Premium brushman47544 Posted May 21, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 21, 2018 I've received the email from BRM/Warners inviting me to confirm that I want to continue receiving e-newsletters. I have tried to say yes, but I can't log in. I don't have an account as far as I am aware as I registered on RMWeb but am not a BRM subscriber. Trying to register with my email address gets the response that my email is already registered, but when I try to log in with that email address and my RMWeb password it says incorrect password. At the moment I can't get the system to recognize me so I can proceed. Any suggestions please.

Andy Y
Just trying to get to the bottom of it so I thought I'd test one of my emails which is registered with WoR. It took me to a new sign-up page (as though the existing login wasn't there) and allowed me to sign up. Maybe it's worth trying to do it from fresh? centraltrains
I tried too last night and had the same problem. Said email was already registered even though I had previously just pressed the log in button... (Using the find account button, doesn't work as after it had found the account it asks for a password and but then says "This email is already in use. Please log in or use the reset password facility if you have forgotten your password. " Even if I log in to the website not via "find my account" I get the same message. RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted May 21, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 21, 2018 If its that complicated just send an e mail and let Warners sort it out.
RMweb Premium brushman47544 Posted May 21, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 21, 2018 (edited) or reset password? Didn't get that option when tried yesterday. Succeeded eventually though, thanks. Edited May 21, 2018 by brushman47544
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted May 21, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 21, 2018 I've also tried using current email registration details but it insists on registering from scratch, including home address etc. I've not had to provide that before and I'm surprised it's a requirement now as it's not necessary and seems contrary to data protection principles! chrisf
I received a postcard today with a box to tick, a space to sign and a freepost address. Sometimes the old ways are the best. Chris
RMweb Premium MikeB Posted May 21, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 21, 2018 (edited) Warners are not making this easy. I received the e-mail, went to the log in link (as a BRM subscriber) but the "create an account" page opened. I re-entered my details and the next page was "this account exists, please log in", which I did. Then to the World of Railways page and I eventually realised that the options needing approval are hidden in the "edit my profile" sub-menu. Giving consent should be quick and easy (one or two clicks as most other companies have managed) not a convoluted process that on anther day would have led me to say, "can't be bothered". And this from a company who are promoting a digital version of a magazine? No thanks, if this is representative of the ease of use of the customer interface of your IT systems. How can that be 'Hidden' that's where I'd expect it to be.
Mike Storey
I got fed up when I tried to re-register, as it refused to accept the password I know I used. So I guess I will get dropped from the mailing, but I am not sure I really care. I wonder how many other people will not bother, because it has been made so hard to do? RMweb Gold D9020 Nimbus Posted May 21, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 21, 2018 I received the email today. Like the others, I was directed to a registration screen. I did find a login link and clicked that, and then "edit my profile" to continue receiving the emails—not that difficult, but since everybody receiving the email *must* have been registered already (even if they don't remember!) something's gone wrong somewhere... Although not a subscriber, I'm a regular purchaser of the digital edition of BRM (there's only so much room to store magazines). I'm impressed by the effort put in to make the most of the digital format—unlike some, it isn't just a copy of the print edition.
Penrhos1920
I can't believe how difficult it can be! I've had GDPR consent emails for all sorts of companies and clubs. Most have been so easy to reply but the Rmweb/BRM email has taken it to a completely stellar league. I've had to give more information about myself than I want to give and now I'm waiting for a second email. Why can't it be like so many others? An email with a link, click link "Hello Penrhos, tick the box to stay in touch". Done, finito, that's it. Needless to say, I've given a false name, false address. Having now logged in I can't find the legally required "right to be forgotten " option.
Beacon
I tried multiple times over the weekend and couldn't get it to work no matter what I did so unfortunately it looks like I'll just have to miss out on future emails.
Harry Lime
Hmmm, https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/may/21/gdpr-emails-mostly-unnecessary-and-in-some-cases-illegal-say-experts Are we wholly sure that this is an exercise that needs to be carried out? Just a thought?
RMweb Gold Colin_McLeod Posted May 21, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 21, 2018 I think this GDPR e mail is a great idea. By ignoring them it means a significant reduction in the number of e mails I will get from here on. Those I want I simply click the appropriate response. I can live without the RMweb e mails if they don't make it easy to confirm that I want them.
RMweb Premium MikeB Posted May 21, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 21, 2018 How can that be 'Hidden' that's where I'd expect it to be. I agree it's a logical place for it, but since people are being invited to go to a website specifically to confirm that they wish to continue to receive e-mails, a prominent button for that purpose on the home page rather than an option that can only be found by opening a drop down menu would seem more user-friendly. As Penrhos 1920 said, other companies make it simple.

As Penrhos 1920 said, other companies make it simple. Other companies might have a lot more IT staff to be able to rewrite the script for a single function.* Personally I prefer such options to be in one place, should you then wish to change at a later date you know where it is. *For info I've just looked at 9 emails I've had in the last couple of days from various organisations both large and small, and only one has a single page with a 'click to receive' all the others want you to update your preferences in the same way as BRM. centraltrains
I've had 2 requiring log in, 8 just a button or link, 1 re-entering data but no login and 13 notifications regarding their policy changes for GDPR but not asking for action. The world-of-railways/RMWeb one wouldn't be a concern if I could actually get it to log me and acknowledge an acceptance... I really want to stay on the email list for RMWeb/BRM/World of Railways so quite concerned..
