RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted August 23, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 23, 2014 Thanks Brian and thanks Beast I've been thinking about the catch points and at the moment my general thought is scratch build dummy ones, as going by pic's by Edgehill signalman there different from peco's, but Ive got four spare cobalt point motors so should I just go down the peco route and have working catch points? Any thoughts on this would be really welcome. Thanks again, Paul

RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted August 24, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 24, 2014 (edited) Evening all Well I went out an got the cork sheeting and copper clad board I needed, then I found my old copper clad when I got in!! Ha ha So I've spent the last few hours laying the cork sheet, I've given the roads leading to Pighue Lane Junction a slight gradient, although thanks to beasts persuasion, I can't lay the track here yet as I need two working catch points. But I have layed the other three lines that lead to Edge Hill, I've given these a slight curve to the right and using some thin sheets of balsa I've given them a slight cant. A couple of pictures of today's progress. Two shots of the junction and were the rails have been soldered to the copper clad prior to cutting. The lines to Pighue Lane Junction and the slight incline using various thicknesses of cork roll. A shot which is of the lines to Edgehill with the slight cant, not sure if these lines look to straight or is it me just worrying over nothing? Thoughts on this one would be welcome! And finally a couple of pics of how it will all look once the other two lines are down. Cheers, Paul Edited August 24, 2014 by PjKing1

Steve Thanks Steve, prob won't get much done for next couple of days but the Mrs goes away working for ten days on a Thurs so I'll guess I'll have plenty of free time!! Brian Cheers Brian, I'll see how it looks with the track layed on top, but I might give it a bit more of a gradient, I'll have to order my catch points to!! flyingsignalman
Ha thanks beast that comments just cost me 20 quid Paul when I needed some trap points I cut small radius points in half; the cost is about the same. (not the best pic but all I can find at the mo)
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted August 24, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 24, 2014 Thanks Keith They look great, it's something I'll look into as the peco catch points are a bit different from the original ones. Cheers, Paul

flyingsignalman
Here's a pic showing a trap point next to a small radius point. It should give you an idea of the "surgery" involved.
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted August 25, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 25, 2014 Thanks Neil and thanks for the great idea Keith! I woke up this morning thinking about the catch points (don't tell the mrs though, we've only be married three weeks!) and I think I'm going to go down the route suggested by the flyingsignalman, I've got quite a few large radius points left over so it's nothing lost and the scratch built ones look more like the original catch points to. Here's a link to a pic of the original catch points and one of my favourite photos. https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/happyraildays/6046867613/ And a couple of pics of the points I'll be butchering. The arrows are roughly were I'll be cutting the rails. Cheers, Paul
AngryMeerkat
Good start Paul, really liking the idea of banking and altering the track level. Don't see many layouts with this idea, but the real railway is banked at most curves so why do we not include it? Looking forward to watching this Mark

Guest bri.s
Hi Paul You'll be surprised once you put camera at track level who much diference a little incline will achieve a couple of MM mabe CM high at the board edge should give a decent effect . Best thing todo it get the camera out and take plenty of pictures of different gradients with mabe a loco on the incline and one on the main track aswell to see the difference ,add in a cant aswell and it'll look the part ,but in my experience the camera is your friend . RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted August 26, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2014 Thanks Brian I'm hoping to get the catch points built Thurs night and if I have time I'll finish laying the track, so there will hopefully be plenty of photos of 'how I built a catch point' and of a plonked 40 an 85 on versus curves and inclines Cheers, Paul
Guest bri.s
I'll be looking forward to your progress, I think with the invention of digital camera's and the fact that you can rattle off as many pictures as you like (many useless ,blurred in my case) is a great tool in railway modelling ,ive got to admit I might take too many but if I get 3out of 10 that show me something I hadn't seen then its worth it . As you can tell i'm in a rambling mood today lol Brian
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted August 26, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2014 Ha I know what you mean, I just use my iPhone for the photos, but you can get some really low down shots you could get with a normal camera, although I do need to get one in the future. Only problem is taking a video, they look really good on the phone but as soon as I upload them to YouTube they loose a lot of the quality even when I've uploaded them in HD Paul
Guest bri.s
I agree the iPhone or small camera is a must for the harder to reach spaces and with the flip screen is a great tool to see those hidden places . Brian
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted August 26, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2014 That's one of my aims when the layout up to a near finished state, plenty of realistic photos and videos. Paul
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted August 28, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 28, 2014 Evening all Well having waved the mrs off for ten days working it was time to make a start on the catch points and to get the rest of the track layed and I can happily say the catch points were really easy to make although I suggest the use of an electric cutting tool! So after about ten minutes marking and cutting, then trimming some sleepers I ended up with these two Once these were done I could lay the lines to Piggy! Due to the restrictions of the board size the curves aren't quite as 'curved' as they should be but hopefully it looks ok. Once again I've used thin balsa under one side of the track for the cant of the curve, unfortunately you can't really see this in the photos. Here's a couple of pics of the fitted catch points. Some of the lines to Piggy which don't really do the cant justice but thought I'd include them. And finally a couple so pics of finished track. Tomorrow night I'll solder all the droppers onto the rails and add sleepers into the gaps, quite pleased with how much I've got done over the last couple of weeks to be honest Cheers, Paul
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted August 29, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 29, 2014 Well I was awake at four so got up and cut some sleepers to fill the gaps!! One less job to do tonight and I've just spent two hours in the gym, got a feeling I might fall asleep in work. Tonight soldering and I might even weather the track whilst I've got the space, back home tomorrow so back to cramped working conditions. On the 'to do' list for this week, install the point motors and make a start on nice neat and tidy wiring, then with a bit of luck, Edge Lane Junction's first video!! Cheers, Paul
