CREWE EXHIBITION LINE UP

A week tomorrow the Crewe exhibition will see the first assembly of the CRMs On30 modular layout. As each individual section is connected with 4" long lengths of track using fishplates, its a bit like building a train set with set track, "plug and play" for model railways.   "The On30 layout, 'Ferrocarril Internacional', will be made up from a selection of the following modules plus a pair of fiddleyards."   RJR SHED     FIDDLE YARD - no picture required   ORANGE GROWERS

Wagon load re-secured

Always keen to improve, a couple of keen observers spotted that the way I had secured the old truck onto the flatbed was not very good, and gave suggestion of how it would be done in reality. So a small amount of rework later ........       The tie downs that were threaded through the spokes of the wheels are now placed at 45 degrees to the front and rear and secured to the truck chassis.       John

Big Blue Diesel !

With 10 days to the CRM Exhibition(Crewe 24th), I've started making mental lists of things I should/would like to get done. The flatcars load neede roping down !   I also decided that as I had put so much effort into getting the Peru Diesel to run properly last night I should finish it off with some glazing and weathering !!!   So here they are together ......                     Comments welcome   John

More fun and games in the shed !

Like many I couldn't get on the forum the last couple of nights but it did mean I got some modelling done.   On Sunday night I took the shovel nose down to the shed and discovered I had should have checked it before getting so far !!! Without the benefit of other stock to check against, due to working in the house not the shed I seemed to have accumulated some extra height... Taking it slightly over maximum permissible height for CRM module use.....   So some rework was required to get the b

Weathered and glazed shovel

Glazing fitted, I assume the windows down the back end are onto a corridor down the engine compartment ? I have painted them black on the inside so you cant see through to the motor anyway, It makes it look more solid not being able to see through it. I have tried to restrain the weathering, no rust just some general and exhaust type grime.         John

New loco for a friend

ENTRY EDITED to include link to a prototype picture HERE   With the now fast approaching deadline of January 24th for the Crewe Exhibition, it suddenly struck me that I had offered to build a "shovel nosed" inspired diesel loco for it principal organiser, CRMs very own "Blackcloud" or as he was on earlier RMwebs "Yorkshire Pullman"   It was a while ago Bob asked if I would have a go at making an On30 Shovel Nose diesel for him, so I accepted the donor engine and promptly put it somewhere saf

Building new Rollingstock

By the trickery of technology (the firbug addon to Firefox) I have mastered the art of entering a 2010 blog post !!!   Whilst not being able to post work has continued at the Orange growers... I was short of some rolling stock, so two OO coaches were stripped for their chassis and a boxcar and flat car built.   The boxcar was built as a plastic shell, covered with Balsa wood strips....       Then painted     Identified and weathered       The flat car was easier, same cha

New In - shed Video. Happy New Year.

Happy New Year to every one....   After trying and failing to post this in the early hours of the morning after our party guests had gone home, I gave up.   After PMs with Andy it became obvious that the blog post only allows dates up to the end of 2009, So by way of cheating I have backdated this to five to midnight.   Yesterday morning some modelling turned into "testing" trains which in turn ended up with some video shooting.   Its the two on30 modules at work and I think the longest

Website Update

Just as an aside to the modelling updates I have made a start on updating my website for the new year ! It is still a work in progress but I aim to get it complete by the end of 2009 !!   It can be found here (www.rjrmodels.webs.com)   John

Orange Growers trucks

Had some modeling time today so concentrated on getting some details on the Orange Growers Module. With an exhibition now less than a month away I need to !!!   First off the space at the front. I really want to keep an open looking feel so low detail was the plan.   A Corgi pickup truck was called into action. Some heavy weathering. Additional details in the back and some home made pallets to give this...               Finally the old Ford at the back has had some weathe

The Big Thaw - more trains in the DEEP snow

Merry Christmas to all !! I hope Santa brought you all you wanted !     On Christmas Eve i decided to dig the outdoor railway out from under about 8" of snow, I had already cleared the driveway and paths for about the 4th time so was out anyway.   Once dug out it would have been rude to not run a couple of trains ?!?!   With the Christmas family gatherings this moring has been the first chance I have had to compile and post the footage to YouTube.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmspa

Roof works and door light

Tonight I have glued the larger buildings in place and added some roof texture, and a lamp over the loading bay door.   These photos taken at dusk           John

Roof top Water tower

With work and play halted outside, some work could get dome on the Orange Growers module. Of course it needs some work with an exhibition date at the end of January !!   Tonights materials.     A spray can lid, some sheet balsa cut into strips and a couple of plasticard off cuts.     The plan... To start making some roof top details, tonght a stair top roof door opening and a roof top water tank.... The ide is to pad out the detail without being to in your face. They can be seen at the

Too much snow is not good for train running !

Some where under here is a railway !!!     This next picture was after explorations yesterday, late evening prior to todays snow     We had a further 4" of snow today so outdoor running was totally out of the question !!!   I exposed some with a spade and as can be seen its getting on for 8 " walls either side of the track ...     So the only thing for it was to clear a path to the shed for some smaller scale modelling INDOORS     John

Garrett and coaches in the snow

Encouraged by the success of the plough on Friday I decided to run the Garratt on Saturday. The weather was COLD it was SNOWING and the tracks were WET and SLIPPY. Not to be put off I got the Garrett out along with the 3 freshly glazed coaches. Fortunatley there are no passangers inside yet, as they may complain about the lack of doors.   All went well till the battery started to run down, with the lack of power, traction became a problem on the slippery gradients.   Here we see her struggl

Let it snow, let it snow

After last nights dilema over what to spend a free hour on, some fresh falling of snow made my mind up !! I had glazed the 3 coaches yesterday and more importantley given them a coat of satin varnish, that would make them stand up to some moisture in the form of snow.   I lasted about 30mins outside (it was -4C) some trains ran but I found that the fresh wet snow falling on the track reduced traction to the point it was hard work getting anything up the grade, throw in batteries that were not

Too many choices ? ! ?

Im sure I will get a couple of hours modelling time tomorrow. Now if I had this opportunity a week ago, the choice would be simple, some work on the Orange Growers Module, after all its at an exhibition on January the 24th !! But then I went and started working on the three 45mm coaches and now Im getting hooked on them. Add in potential photo opportunites in the snowy garden and there is just too many fun things to do and not enough time !!! The temperature is no longer a factor either, I s

Snow Plough action in the garden

Like many of us, we had along with VERY COLD weather a downfall of snow... This of course gave the perfect excuse to run a train in the garden !!! Having built a leaf/snow plough in preperation for just such an occasion I put on my wooly hat and ventured out. Much to tha amusement of my 16 year old daughter.   Christmas is here !!!!!

Coach repaints underway

At the end of the last post that introduced the 45mm garden stuff, I said someething along the lines of "you wont see any more of this till the spring"   Well having looked at the pictures I got tempted to do some of the repainting.   It early days yet, edges to tidy, details to add, glazing to add seats to fit but they are looking a bit less toy like ??   Heres how they arrived in the Autumn, being tested behind the shunter, the result of 3 successfull ebay bids       Some minor su

Naming a video on YouTube

I bet for those that post model railway videos on YouTube, you dont give much thought to its name ?? I didnt used to untill now ... Having been going through loads of old pictures and films in order to get this blog worth reading, or at least up to date as a starting point, I discovered something amazing.   A video i posted on YouTube about 2 years ago has now collected getting on for 45,000 views !!!!! On its own it draws hundreds of people into my YouTube Chanel. What is the atraction ?? Wel

Introducing the 45mm garden Railway

Having gone to the trouble of indexing my blog I discovered I had no entries for the garden section of the empire. So decided it was about time the big stuff got a starting post. As the weather has got colder and wetter it is far to say the garden has really taken a back burner in the priority list, but during the summer it was the only thing on the list !!   I have always liked the idea of using the garden, my return to model railways was with an On30 garden line, which became a OO garden lin

Mossley Terrace

Just to show not everything is the shed is make believe and without a prototype, here is the OO Module !!   It got quite a lot of exposure in the old RMweb here but for a potted history....   Like the On30 modules, Mossley was built to be part of a Chesire Railway Modellers line up, and has appeared at several shows, both as part of the modular line up and on its own with its fiddle yards at either end.                   Seen here at the Crewe exhibition with some other C

The "On Shed" Module

Having spent time this afternoon organising the blogs indexing, I realised I should probably document some of the other layouts.   So here is some more information about the other On30 Module. Both modules have been built as part of the Cheshire Railway Modellers On30 layout. They dont come together often, in fact they will make there debute together at our show in January. Based on our OO modules that have had several outings. The principal is simple, individual club members make their own mo
