The thin Orange line

It may not seem like a big job, but it wasn't half fiddly !!   I have applied the orange line round the top, I considered painting it but chickened out. So I stopped off at my local sign makers, and cadged an off cut of orange vinyl tape, its self adhesive and just needed cutting into 1.5mm strips.         Note that Pointing Man has turned up too !!!!   John

Buffers made and added to the 20

When I built my 25, I struggled to come up with a way of cutting plasticard into discs. It had me stumped for days ! and then I came up with a real simple solution... 4pence tooling   Step One   Super glue four 1 pence pieces to a strip of styrene.       Step Two   Using a blade score straight lines round the penny, then with a pair of pliers snap the surplus off. You need to hold the penny to the card.           Step Three   Dress the edge with a file using the penny as a

Class 20 Railfreight logo

The white sticky labels have been in the printer again this evening ! This time to make some Railfreight cab side logos. I have also applied numbers. I had some white vinyl letters that I used on the 25 so rather than getting black ones I used a permanent marker to colour them in, before peeling them of the backing sheet!       This side has also had the white window frame added but the black needs some tidying up at the edges still.

Large logo, for the 20

This evening I have been playing with a logo, I already had a small version for the 25 which I enlarged to the right size. I then inverted the colours so the bit I wanted was white leaving the background grey. Finally I printed it on some white paper, self adhesive labels.     These were stuck on and given a coat of satin spray varnish to seal them.         John

Class 20 Paint job

The basic colours are now in place, but will need some rework, in particular the red which is still somewhat transparent.     Following the yellow, the next colour up was the Railmatch Grey for the sides, which like the yellow was applied from a rattle can in very thin coats "force" dried with a hair drier, then another coat applied until an even coverage was achieved. The grey went on last night.   This morning the sides were masked a the lighter grey roof was done (actually primer gr

Class 20 in G last coat of Primer

I haven't made many posts of late. I decided it wasn't that interesting to show the results of rubbing, priming, rubbing priming !!! As I have been trying to get a surface finish I was happy with. I think the other reason for all the rubbing and priming was to put off doing the next bit. I wouldn't say I had lost my modelling Mojo, more I had come to a point of the build that I couldn't work out the best way forward. The circular fan grill on the top !   The 25 I di has quite a chunky grill, t

Class 20 grill rework

I kept looking at the last set of pictures and the louvre doors just didn't look right. Then I realised the proto the frames are more prominent, to louvres don't protrude as much.   So I did a bit of rework and added an extra frame. I think it looks better now.       John

G scale class 20 in Primer

The last couple of days have seen the 20 have some more small details added followed by a first coat of primer.           This of course highlighted all the lumps bumps and surface scratches caused by over enthusiastic sanding.   So an application of P38 body filler was needed followed by a couple of hours of sanding and "tweaking"           Of course the second set were always going to look better as they were taken in sunlight !   If you fancy a change from Rail

Lostwithiel

My lack of modelling this last week has been due to being in Cornwall, staying in the former Brunel works right alongside Lostwithiel station on the main Plymouth to Penzanze line. Lots of trains to watchn some far to early in the morning to be passing 30' from the velux windows. Also very poor signal on my blacberry. But I have been emailing pictures and entries to my Blogger account. if this section of railway is of interest check it out at   www.rjrmodels.blogspot.com   Several videos of

class 20 in G, day two of building

A combination of a late finish and calling at my parents to set up his new lap top, has left me with limited time / energy to do much tonight, so I have blended the roof line to the body sides with a rad. Then I shaped a piece of balsa for the nose and bedded it on some P38 filler. when it has dried this will all be blended in too.             John

Class 20 in G

Over the weekend I was considering what I could fill my evenings with this week. Mrs RJR is organising a youth camp which are eldest 2 are on and the youngest has gone on Holiday with here friends family, so I am " Home Alone"   Any way I decided I would have a go at a class 20 as I could cheat and use the bogie units off the 25 to give me a head start. After sourcing some suitable plans on Sunday evening and some plasticard on the way home mid after noon today I had everything I needed   H

Class 25 interior details

Work has now started on trying to replicate the feel of the cab interior of the 25. The first part being the front consol. This is made from some plasticard off cuts and other bits of scrap from the bit box. The dials are images composed on the computer and reduced to fit. They are composites of various interior cab pictures I could find merged together.   On the workbench     Details added and painted in the cab       John

Roof colour improvement

This afternoon I have been doing some roof colouring, lots of 25 pictures show the roof as being near black with dirt. The coach roof was too light as well.   I also have sprayed some sleeper grime on the bottom of the coach, which still needs a lot of glazing ( I keep putting it off !)   Roof ..     Grime..     In the next one I like how you can see the coach through the cab, one of the benefits of larger scales, this sort of picture is easier !     And my favourite picture

Buffer Details

If you collect together enough scraps of rubber tube, wire and plastic sprues then add in a couple of plastic card offcuts and you have just enough bits to make some buffer beam details     The green is a garden plant tie.   I also have moved the numbers to be on the drivers window at each end as per the discussion with James after the last blog post.   Then add a bit of black, orange and silver paint..       Finally pointing man is devastated it appears the platform is not buil

More small details on the G gauge coach

I've spent a couple of days in London. 12 days ago we took our 16 year old daughter up to Newcastle to join the youth crew on a "Tall Ship" the Stavros S Niarchos. She spent the last 12 days sailing the North sea, including a stop in Holland. The climax was coming up the Thames yesterday afternoon and under Tower bridge. More info on my external blog   http://rjrmodels.blo...s-niarchos.html   We got home today mid afternoon and I have only spent half an hour in the shed tonight, a couple mo

Not much to show for my time tonight

I like a wander down the shed even if it is only for 20mins, and tonight that was about all it was, so not a lot to show, but what there is stands out as its still white in a sea of grey.         Its not as wonky as the picture makes it look, it was just taken at an odd angle.   Of course my lack of prototype knowledge prevents me from naming these bits but they are on the plans an pictures !     John
