Mitchell Manor pt5

Picking up where I left off the first task on the list was to get the cab roof fitted. I starting off with the beading around the edge, slowly soldering into position as it was formed to shape.   The rear roof support was soldered in place between the cab sides, before fitting the roof etch into position.   the next step was to add the box onto which the screw reversed fits, it would have been easier to fit this before adding the roof.   This was followed by the cab

Mitchell Manor Build pt4a

A little more work was completed on the Manor after my posting last night.   First up was some work inside the cab, soldering the cab floor into position and adding the strip to the inside of the cab sides.  I think the only etchings left to fit in the cab are now the seats.   I am trying to push myself with this build, and a key part of this is trying to solder everything rather than taking the easy option and gluing in small parts.   With the reinforcing strips added, the n

Mitchell Manor pt4

Thanks to a last minute change in valentine's day plans (with my wife having to work) instead of going out to dinner I have managed to get a little more done on the Manor, starting with the flanges on the motion bracket.  A fairly easy job once I worked out what part needed to be used (no thanks to the instructions!)  The next job was the fire iron tunnel, sweating together 3 parts was a bit of a pain (as it kept coming apart when I added the third layer).  After a little fettling it was soldere

Mitchell Manor Build pt3

Another hour's work on the Manor last night and more progress.   First up was the cab, the etched beading was completed (adding the mm or so up to the roof) before bending to shape and test fitting the cab floor.   Once I was happy with the cab it was soldered into position on the footplate.   Next up was an attempt to try and finish off those parts which were missed off in earlier stages, so on went the lamp irons (along with resoldering the joint between the bufferbeam

Mitchell Manor Build Pt2

On to part two of the Manor build…   The focus of the work here should have been adding the splashers, however I have had real difficulties getting them to fit.  With the splasher rolled to shape and placed on top of the inner splasher (the folded up etch that you attach the detail etch for the front of the splasher), it is about half a mm too short.  As a result I was struggling to solder them in place.  In the end I tried an alternative approach soldering the splasher to the front pi

Mitchell Manor Build pt1

Now that my Cameo Competition layout is pretty much finished, its time to get back to work on Brent.  After months of working with plastic RTR models, I feel a bit of kit building is in order.  So its out with a long term project and my Mitchell Manor kit.      I started this back in 2015 after buying half a kit from Malcom (a full set of etches and most of the castings), however I have no tender (which will be a Hornby Churchward 3500gl) and no chassis.   I am also missing one ke

2018 in Review: Stock for Brent

As per usual as we approach Christmas, its time to review another year’s modelling.   County of Somerset: At the end of last year this loco was on the troublesome list, the major work was finished but its new chassis was not running smoothly so it couldn’t progress to DCC fitting and final commissioning. GWR Coach Painting: Complete

After another long painting session last night I have now finished the painting on my Centenary rake, the H33 and H26 resturants, and the A20 First (although on the latter I was not paying attention to what I was doing and forgot to paint one end!) After a lot of time messing about with 1990s TPO stock last night, I also found time to do a little more work on my 1947 coach projects   While there is still a lot of work to do to get these ready to enter service, the most pressing task is to finish the painting. This covers a number of areas: the black ends (tonight’s job), dirty underframes, the window frames and touch up work on the cream paint to fix where brown paint seeped under the masking. This last point was the focus last night.

Autocoach Painted

A very long time after completing the detailing, I have finally got on with painting my autocoach into wartime brown, based on a 1945 photo of 4870. I have bought it forward a couple of years to 1947 (with 4870 now renumbered as 1470) , however the coach will remain muc b the same z   As previously mentioned the model has been detailed with the Dart Castings pack, so it’s separate handrails etc on the body and a lot more detail on the chassis.   The body was sprayed in Triumph Russet Brown

More coach painting H26/H33

Last night I finally made a start on a job that has been awaiting attention for far too long, painting the roofs of coaches.   At last count I currently have 7 Centenaries, a H26, a H33, a Large Window first, 5 Mainline sunshine stock and 8 Hornby Colletts that all need the roofs painting grey. 1470 gains an ash pan

Inspired by PMPs recent blog, I have finally got on with adding an ash pan to my DJM model of 1470. Cobbled together from some black plasticard cut to shape roughly from the etched version on a high level chassis. GWR Beetle + Centenaries

Yesterday while visiting the East Somerset Railway, I picked up a Parkside kit for a W7 diagram prize cattle van. Its been a fun build, all be it not Parkside's finest work. Modified Iron Mink (MRD/Ratio)

At Scaleforum one of the key purchases on my shopping list was a set of handrail brackets for a couple of Bachmann Toads from MRD. While I was there I spotted the etched replacement doors for Iron Minks, which comes with a brass roof and break gear. Another cattle wagon

Last night saw cattle van no3 assembled, this time building straight from the kit rather than adding my usual sprung suspension as the wagon is being built for OO only. Going forward it will just be long wheelbase stock getting the extra suspension units (along with anything with poorly designed parts in the kit)   I do like the design of these coopercraft kits, they just fall together and have such crisp tooling. Cattle Vans

The current project to grace the workbench is a short rake of cattle wagons, the first 3 wagons will be a pair of Coopercraft W5s and an Airfix kit converted into a W12   The first Coopercraft was built while working away from home a few years ago, in the meantime it has suffered some damage. This was repaired with Evergreen strip, along with replacement wire bars. The latter were fitted by melting into the side with a soldering iron. A quick Siphon H

As mentioned in my last blog I picked up a bargain Mainline Siphon H as spares and repair from eBay. Looking at the photos it looked to include a set of replacement American bogies and metal wheels, but was unclear as to the condition of the rest.   After arrival it was clearly in a pretty good condition, wheels wouldn't fit in the bogies, a missing buffer, and a glue mark on the roof. More wagons

A lot more wagon work this evening,   First up a bunch of wagons from my Cheddar valley project that have now been rewheeled for Brent, most of these were missing buffers (given that they were originally going to get sprung buffers.) I have now temporarily fitted them with fixed steel buffer heads, however the diameter is too large for most of the wagons so they will eventually need replacing with the correct size. Today I have been trying to tidy up the workshop today (which has become a total state over the past few months). As part of this I have been trying to sort out unfinished projects, one of which was the D14 break van needed for my workmans train on Brent.   After painting it last year it has sat waiting for final fittings. 6829 a tender correction

Having had it pointed out that the tender for my model of 6829 In wartime black should probably be in G crest W rather than GWR as I had modeled. A bit more research later and I found a photo on colour rail of the loco in question taken in 1947, one ‘modellers scan’ later and it was very clear that the model should have the crest not GWR. I am now on the home stretch with the 47xx, first up the Black has now been painted. I couldn’t believe how long it took to mask the green, some areas such as the splashers were particularly tricky.   Once dry it was then time to brush paint the tricky areas, along with two small patches where the black seaped under the masking.   The red has had another coat added (although still needs a third coat), and the transfers have been added to the tender. PDK 4707 Part 10

I only have 3 more Friday afternoons before changing jobs and having to work a full Friday, so I have been making the most of it.   The first job as was to finish off the clyinders, first up the castings were added (glued into place with superglue), before soldering the crosshead to a pin through the drive rod. In order to secure the pin I used a piece of etch offcut drilled with a 0.8mm hole soldered in position (rather than the supplied nut which I lost in the carpet!)   With this finis
