Retirement!

No not Sherton Abbas, but me! After more than 30 years of teaching Dental students the delights of "Fixed and Removeable Prosthodontics", I’m now a gentleman of leisure😀  Now you would think that would result in a flurry of modelling activity, but I’m afraid Mrs Wenlock has other ideas.  There appears to be a list of projects and jobs that have in her words “Just been waiting for you to have time to do them”, that she has been creating for the past couple of years!  I’ve managed to finish constructing her decking, gazebo and garden bar projects, but apparently there are a number of what she refers to as “Little jobs indoors” still to attend to.

It’ not all been DIY projects though, I treated myself to a fortnight of riding my motorcycle around Northern Spain & Portugal 😎

I caught the ferry from Plymouth to Santander, fortunately the Bay of Biscay was calm, a very gentle crossing.  Once in Spain my friends and I spent a few days riding in the Picos mountains before heading to Covilha in Portugal.  The Serra da Estrela Natural Park contains mainland Portugal’s highest point at 1993 metres, along with spectacular roads, views and rock formations 😀

1800 miles of fabulous riding in beautiful sunshine before heading back to the UK again.  Within an hour of landing back in Plymouth I was on the M5 which was at a standstill, surrounded by caravans and it was raining! Good to be home😆

Sherton Abbas has changed little over the last 6 months, although I have added a pair of etched brass cold frames alongside the walkway to the signal box.

It’s been a while since I posted any pictures of the layout on the forum, so here are a few views of the layout.

If you are thinking that trains are conspicuous by their absence, then the explanation is that they are all safely in their storage boxes!  I’m taking the layout to the Farnham & District model railway exhibition on the weekend of the 8th and 9th of October.   Exhibition | F&DMRC (farnhammrc.org.uk)

I’m thoroughly looking forward to the show, it’s been nearly a year since the layout’s last outing and should be a really good weekend!

If you do come along to the exhibition, come over for a chat, it’s always good to put faces to names on the forum🙂

Best wishes

Dave

Good to hear you have started your retirement with a cracking holiday, some wonderful pics there.

When I was just a lad my mother would say " David . Mrs Mazawattee."  Which was  me getting my orders to brew a pot of tea. The tea itself came from the co-op, it was only years later that I realised that Mazawattee was a brand of tea. Anyway a  daft tale but seeing the advert for it on the station just reminded me  of it.

I have often tried to explain to folk that model railways are about far more of history than just railways. Sherton Abbas is a wonderful example of that.

The Spanish have a word for retirement (you may have heard it in the high Picos) which always sounds so much more fun - Jubilación.  You can hear the bells ringing and the guns saluting in that word!

Great pictures up in the mountains and down in Sherton Abbas - nice motorbike too.

Can't make Farnham which is a pity as I've long looked forward to seeing Sherton Abbas but I hope the show is a success, I'm sure it will be.

Best wishes...Kit PW

Retirement, magic!

Just make sure that you do what you want when you want.

best wishes, Graham

Thanks Graham, that’s the plan!

I’m still getting used to waking up in the morning and thinking what shall I do today, rather than  what have I got to today 🙂

Hope to see you at Farnham.

That’s a lovely tale about your mother and the Mazawattee tea, thanks for sharing it.

Yes I’ve tried to do exactly the same thing and are delighted you think Sherton Abbas demonstrates that principle.

Best wishes

Thanks Kit PW!

Jubilation is splendid word, much better than retirement, which dwells on the ending of work rather than celebrating stopping it!

Glad you like the bike, It’s 60 kilos lighter than my last 1200 and handles all the better for it!

Its a shame you can’t make Farnham, the only other show I’m doing this year is up in Manchester in December.

If it takes a railway modeller one year to build a model locomotive one foot long, how long does it take to put up a shelf three feet long??

September was always the towing season, for anything going to Gibraltar from Devonport or Pompey, due to the usually calm weather.

We struck lucky with our booking then, the timing was to coincide with the end off the school holidays when the “little darlings” were safely back at school!  It does explain why it was like a mill pond both ways🙂

Congratulations Dave, I really like Kit's Spanish Jubilacion (although I imagine it also leads to moments of reflection). The trip looks like a great ride, I love the Spanish mountains but have never visited the Portugese ranges, looks like Serra da Estrela should be on the list!

Regarding Mrs Wenlock's list, what if we made a competing one? For example I'd like to see the clerestories finished, and I'm sure others have ideas for the list too. We've all "just been waiting for you to have time for them". And you thought retirement would bring you peace! 😄

Thanks Mikkel!  Yes Jubilacion is a great word🙂  There has certainly been a bit of reflection regarding working life, but the overwhelming feeling for me has been I’m glad that’s over!  A reduction in the number of teaching staff, lack of facilities and then COVID made the last couple of years fairly grim, so I can’t say I miss much!

Lol! I’m sure your list and mine would be fairly similar😀 Now Autumn is here I think progress will be made on the coaching stock, it’s about time!

Mrs Wenlock's list,

So how have you got away with all the time previously spent modelling?

Funnily enough a fair proportion of it was done during lunchtime at work! My lab had a a very useful set of tools, hand pieces and access to casting facilities that I’m going to miss because of my retirement!😀

Farnham Show... 25 miles / 45 minutes...

Some very fine layouts on the bill - and that's not just the Edwardian Great Western ones.

Jubilación indeed!  I've enjoyed 14 years of retirement now and did lots of world-wide travelling until covid struck to cramp my style.  Your photos look wonderful - somewhere that I've not been but within fairly easy reach.

Thanks Mike! I’d certainly recommend both the Picos mountains and rural Portugal as destinations to explore, fabulous landscapes and magnificent food!

It was great to see Sherton Abbas at the Farnham show today - just as good in real life as in the pictures here. A real treat.
