I'd like to report a robbery...

The following is a transcript of a conversation I had last month with the Police. For simplicity I have translated it from Spanish to English…

Bcnpete: Good morning, I would like to report a robbery.

Police: Good morning Sir – What exactly has been stolen?

Bcnpete: A viaduct.

Police: A viaduct Sir?

Bcnpete: Yes…but not a complete one….only one bay of the viaduct.

Police: One bay of a viaduct? I'm not sure I follow.

Bcnpete: That’s right…but not a full size bay…a scale model one.

Police: I am not sure I am getting this Sir…You have an accent…are you English by chance?

Bcnpete: From London originally…anyway...It’s a scale model of a viaduct, oh and it’s based on one in Cornwall.

Police: So…to recap….A Viaduct – one bay – scale model - Cornwall – Englishman

Bcnpete: Correct. And some trees too…and an old Brunel pier too…Oh forget that, it’s getting too complicated. What’s the next move?

Police: I think we had better visit the crime scene.

Bcnpete: Thanks. See you soon. Places receiver…thinks to himself ‘Soon is not something I usually equate with Spain’

Police: Goodbye Sir. Places receiver….mutters to himself ‘Crazy English guy…he sounded a bit drunk’

That afternoon, a knock on the door and two policemen arrived complete with CSI Barcelona.

After showing them some old pictures of my diorama comp entry from last year, they got to work photographing and dusting with those small fluffy brushes.

Crime scene...

Three weeks passed by with no news and I was beginning to lose faith in the Spanish police, pondering that perhaps that they were spending a good part of their day catching speeding motorists and issuing €300 fines, rather than tracking my viaduct. I began to think it was time to start afresh and rebuild the viaduct again, using lessons learnt from the first model…when I walked into our model room home office and something in the background caught my eye…

As I got closer…tears of joy began to unfold…there in front of me, the viaduct stood relocated in the correct position on my Coombe Junction – Moorswater layout which had been lying low whilst I had been busy working in the Far North of Scotland.

Plan view...curve introduced to backscene...

Note crude wiring...which will disappear beneath the layout...

The mysterious magic pixies from the Duchy, perhaps concerned of the neglect of the layout of late had repositioned it and modified the backscene to include that much needed curve in the corner. I was overwhelmed…and immediately telephoned the Spanish Police...but I won’t bother to translate that conversation as there are far too many expletives.

So on that note, I hereby give notice that work has recommenced on all things Cornish and I am hoping to make good progress of the 3 boards between now and Christmas, starting with Board 3, Moorswater.

I believe it coincides with the month of April starting today… :D

Hi Pete, good to see your attention is back to the Duchy. Long may it continue.Just back from there today myself (and somewhat cream crackered), but more of a mining than a railway focus on this occasion. I did manage to pop in to a certain emporium in Camborne yesterday though but managed to avoid buying any more Farish or Dapol offerings and confined myself to buying yet another book of diesel hydraulic pics. You can't have too many of these, I find.Did anyone notice that the Brunel pier hasnt turned up yet? Should we worry?

Andy, hi - worry not...it was also recovered along with the trees but the Brunel pier will sit on the next board as otherwise it pushes the viaduct toooo close to the dries. Thanks for your comments...whilst I enjoyed my Scottish excursion its nice to get back in the Duchy...

10s! They were the ones with elasticated sides then (Dealer Boots by DM!!). I stopped wearing them after an unfortunate event involving a rather large pig, a pig sty and several tons of pig sh.....manure!!!!!

Steady Neil...RMwebs a family show afterall...:D

My parents went to Barcelona last year for a short break. They found it a very scary place to be once it got dark.

And some places in daylight too...mind you, Fulham where we previously lived could be like that too...:O

Manuêl: Que? Yipee, I was looking forward to your return to this, Pete! I really like the addition of the backscene - and the viaduct is just looking superb there!

But I learn Mr Fawlty....I learn...

Thanks Mikkel - The backscenes were originally conceived and built to be removable for flat pack travelling (hence no curve) however its likely if the layout ever gets back to the UK it will be in the back of a van rather than flown so I may as well permanently attach them now. Its surprising how much weight the laminated 2mm cardboard I used adds to the shelves now...

Just had a look at your index on this - those buildings are very realistic and fit the layout perfectly - are they based on a prototype location or have you conjured them up from your imagination? Whichever it is you can tell you're an architect simply because of your ability to get the proportions and look dead on. The little openings for photography at the back is also a brilliant idea - I too love those 'glimpse at the trains going by' nooks and crannies - something that modelers tend to forget with the typical 'view from the sky' perspective models. Sometimes it really is better to see the trees instead of the wood - it's more fun for the viewer to let his/her imagination fill in the rest of the details. The way the buildings curve to suit the track is very appealing too - a curve being better than a straight line when it comes to creating an interesting look.

I've said this before - you ought to put something together on designing/building display layouts - you've certainly got enough material, especially those drawings of yours - there's a lot of stuff out there on the market that doesn't quite compare and you're giving it away for free! Which is brilliant for us by the way. It'd be a unique take on layout building - marrying architectural/engineering drawing with model railways! I've just read George Dent's book on 00 gauge loco detailing and thought it was brilliant (well written, very informative and great photography), but no sketches. Whilst we all love the ease of use of the internet for inspiration it's nothing like a good little book to carry anywhere with you. I'm sure many here would agree with me - a nice little soft back on the basic principles of good design would definitely sell! Do it before someone else does.

Modelling 2mm scale sarnies wit accurate fillings. That is dedication to the cause!

To pinch a joke from someone else on here, you've got to have a roll model

Thanks for your kind comments Mike.

Firstly, the buildings are based on Moorswater clay dries. I haven't got exact drawings so I have scaled up from the OS maps in the various books I have on the Looe branch and then using photographs, 'guestimated there proportions'. It does curve as per that and I hope it will give some interesting camera views including the little letterbox in the front fascia. I will PM you some photos of Moorswater as I still can't find out how to upload images on a blog in a reply!

Secondly, thanks again for the compliments on the sketches/my way of working but I am not sure they would be well received in print. TBH, I would feel embarrassed about trying to earn revenue from it as we learn so much for free from everyone else on this forum here, that hopefully if peeps can find them useful in some way, its my way of giving something back to the forum. Does that make sense?
