front, back...and middle...

Update - Some more progress since restarting the layout again...

Firstly, the backscene has had a first coat of blue paint. I am going to keep it simple and use the same technique as my diorama by adding some foliage at the base and then a screen of trees in front of it along the length of the layout. It needs some sanding and smoothing where the joins are but I have run out of the paint so will redo next month. Perhaps some clouds added after but overall its a plain blue sky painted using Wilko 'cloudless' tester pot. Note to self: Buy 5 more pots when next in UK.

Secondly, the front fascia has had the located screws removed, filled and first coat of the grey paint. I need to revisit this, sand and smooth off but I like this colour for fascias now in preference to black as I think it looks quite smart...sophisticated even :D

Thirdly, I have tweaked the turnout. The operating switch has been located and this will be hidden by some foliage and trees accessed by a finger through the hole in the backscene. Rather than rebuild the turnout completely (for the third time :O) I set about removing the frog area and made new ones. After refitting and tweaking, the 25 and a 47 seem to rumble through it quite nicely. Some of the wagons cough a little but I think they need some weight added as the etch chassis is very light even with a Parkwood body on.

The next phase will be to spray the track in grey primer, redo the small sliding traverser in the dries area to release locos, add the sculptamold to the ground contours and then have another crack at the infill trackwork area :swoon:

I attach the sketch done previously that demonstrates with a small cassette it may be possible to run this board on its own and change the eras of the stock to represent clay hoods through to PCA's etc. I have included a few pics of some surprisingly lengthy visitors to Moorswater...and happily the ferrywagons can squeeze around the tight curves at Moorswater...need to rewheel that 66 pretty sharpish too.

Some pics...

Front on view...its smartened the layout up a little...

And 3/4 view...what's that 'non BR Blue alien' doing in the dries... :O

Hoping to get some nice low level shots through the trees once the scenics are underway again...

EDIT: Apologies for the scraggy scenery in a couple of the shots above...this will all get covered when the 'cake skimming' sculptamold team arrive soon...

Hi Pete,

This is coming along nicely. The great thing with this board is that you can run stock from all eras as I presume none of the buildings have changed much in the last few decades.

Looking forward to seeing those low level shots through the trees!!

Best regards,

Jeremy

The backscene looks a nice shade - sort of captures that greyish overcast look.

I've had to add weight to my clay hoods (which are the Parkwood body on Peco chassis - not yet ready to try 2fs!) as they were far too light and didn't like the points, especially if being propelled.

Look forward to some tree shots soon......

Thanks Jeremy - Exactly...whilst I can't really justify running that train through Coombe Junction, apart from a few modifications to the buildings, the change from a clay to a cement works is not that different...the building on the left is no longer used now and has the openings blocked up...some careful photographic shots required me thinks!...

Thanks Tom - Most of the rolling stock is ok propelled but the clay hoods are very delicate...especially if there is no hood on them! Tree shots are coming...but have something planned for this first...

Thanks Nick...sort of green though...I photoshopped out the third rail pick up shoe...:P

F/L 66 on bright yellow Cargowaggons! Proper job!!! :D

Thanks Mickey - They need a good dose of weathering as I saw the ones on the branch from a shot John Vaughan has sent me...can barely see they are yellow from it...something quite compelling about how those big beasties managed the tight curves down to the branch isn't there?...

With a lot of flange squeal IIRC :D

I always particularly recall seeing one of the BIG yellow things waiting in the loop in the yard at Liskeard very early one misty morning, and trust me, that one was very yellow indeed - It seemed as if the sun had dropped out of the sky!

Hence the Cornish blue sky backscene...which hopefully won't be as eventful as the Kyle backscene!

Looks great to me Pete, the viaduct makes a surprisingly good break before the fiddle yard. Looking forward to seeing this progress :good:

Sorry I'd missed this entry Pete; been having a bit of an off period RM wise. I think the one item that stands out (or rather doesn't) is the nicely curved backscene so completly devoid of corners... was this a specific material (cut at the back) or something else?

It's looking good btw... nice to see it back in construction again.

Hi Pete.

Looking really good with the stolen viaduct in place ;)

Just wondering how you are planning on tackling the inset track 2nd time around?

Thanks Bryn - It's not the most discrete of scenic breaks...but perhaps the highest at 150ft! It's really intended to enable this board to be set up on the dining room table for a bit of fun and a few photo shoots as its too difficult to erect the whole layout and leave it up...without raising a little dust domestically...

Jon, hi - no problem. Hope you had a good break...it looked good from your pics. Thanks, the backscene is 2 x 2mm Artist grey card laminated together with PVA. Its surprisingly strong and also heavy but the main reason is I don't have access to a garage/workshop in our apartment hence the use of card over ply etc. The original 90 degree corner shape has had a piece added and feathered in (think there is a plan view on my last blog entry here) and still needs a little sanding/filling and repainting but overall it works better...had to chop the end off the dries building too!

Thanks Tom - I am still wearing my white gloves when handling the viaduct...For the inset track, this time I have used PCB and code 40 and added a check rail. The plan this time is to first fill the middle between the check rails with Sculptamold (I can sand that flush) and then use card for the outer edges which will then have a light skim over the joints. Lets see how this maps out...

Very good, Pete. The viaduct looks rather well in its new home!Keep 'em coming. :D

Thanks Tony - Only one more 90 degree corner to sort at the other end of the layout now...

Coming along nicely. Can't wait for the foliage - the real place has lots of foliage IIRC.

Thanks Andy - Indeed...although I won't represent it as it exists now...more late 70's/early eighties when the railways used to spend more money on pruning the lineside vegetation. I will try and make the distinction between the line to Coombe Junction and the freight only line to Moorswater. Guess I could always model the 'Chipmans weedkilling train' which I have a photo of a pair of 20's top and tailing it at Coombe Junction...

Pete, looking at the second shot: You've just got to have a bungee-jumping figure dangling from the viaduct! ;-)

Thanks Mickey...That's the clean version...next issue, you get the grubby versions...:D
