So after a break for a holiday away a return to work
First up another Bachmann 08. This time in Green it was regauged to EM and dcc chip fitted by Mike Edge. I weathered it and now it has returned to be fitted with a ESU Loksound chip )with legomanbiffo sounds) and a speaker place behind the radiator grill.
As this was weathered about 5 years ago I have added some more dirt around the exhaust to bring it up to todays' weathering standard
and I have just repainted, lined and
Latest weathering update..
One Heljan O Gauge Blue Western...
Front end...
side detail..
and that nameplate...
all from an original photo...
added sunny day shots to get the colour variations better and to show activeweathering of the windscreen..
Been busy with a bit of sound fitting and weathering over the last couple of days.
A couple of examples
First up a Caprotti 5 from a Comet Kit built and painted by Steve Haley Graham Varley. I fitted a Loksound V4 (sound from Digitrains) chip in the tender and 2 sugar cubes in the front frames (isn't EM gauge wonderful sometimes?) and then weathered it.
Question - were any Caprottis ever kept clean?
and for something different a Heljan CoBo - re-gauged by Mike Edge to EM. I
Been busy regauging and adding couplings to a lot of wagons recently. First batch to be weathered are a number of BR standard mineral wagons (24.5t and 16t) plus a brake van
First up a couple of 24.5t and one 16t mineral wagon
Not all of them will have rust patches but all have "dirt" added.
Now two 16t Minerals
and a 24.5t mineral with a brake van..
and just to finish off some Blue Spot fish vans - a mix of Hornby Dublo and Wrenn
Enjoy!
Just for a change here are some of my own stock weathered for use on a variety of layouts.
First up a Hornby Black 5 which was part modified by Tim of RMWeb at Doncaster
The modification at the front end make a big difference - thanks Tim!
and now a dirty Mark 1 Corridor First. Nice looking coach just a bit plastic shiny out of the box so a bit of brown ink/water and brown coloured powder up to the tumblehome and black in/water and black powders
and finally a couple of ph
As usual at a show I didn't get loads of wagons weathered. Some I had started prior to the show...
First up a Parkside ex SNCF 16T mineral wagon. All over dirt with a bit of added rust
I have been working on some ex PO wagons. One is an Oxford mineral. A bit of work with a glass fibre brush then some weathering. The other is Slaters PO. By using the glass fibre brush on some of the planks means the original brown paint shows through. Some numbers from Modelmasters and then just a was
So having been away from my workbench a while I returned and spent most of Wednesday weathering some vans and wagons -Unfortunately I didn't get photos of all of them "clean" but here are a few of the ones completed..
First up a couple of ex LMS unfitted cattle wagons..
then a Mink D - this is one with ventilators added to the ends - only a small number were built
and a SR BY
and a blast from the past and ex Ian Kirk kit of a 5 plank open
Finding good colour
Well in between umpiring I have finally managed to do some more weathering. At the moment this has been confined to a coach and some wagons.
The coach is a Hornby Hawksworth in Blood and Custard. I am not sure how accurate these are but they are very nice models..
and of the wagons well, yet another Murgatroyd's Tanker has been weathered (and the next one has just arrived)..
and I have been busy re-weathering a pair of Dapol Private owner rectangular tank wagons..
Been doing a lot of wagons of a wide variety of shapes, sizes and types but all are now EM and have 3 links or instanter couplings fitted.
Bachmann 16T unfitted minerals have been part of the work. Just wish that Bachmann chassis were more "EM Friendly"! first up - one of the minerals fitted with a pressed movable end door
and a standard 16T mineral with doors in the floor
and the interior
First three of a lot more
An Airfix and a Bachmann SR designed 2+2
I have never done "before and after shots of locos I have weathered - but I am impressed by Davey4270's shots of the O gauge Wagons I have weathered for him.
So having received a number of locos from Mike Edge to weather here are some before shots - I will add the weathered versions over the coming days. First up a Jubilee by Mike - all I can say is what a beauty!
and now a weathered one..
next a Duchess - Princess Alice complete with Scottish Region nameplate..
and C
A few weathered unfitted wagons
Slaters ex MR (later LMS) Cattle Wagon
a Bachmann BR standard Grain Hopper - a very nice wagon!
and a Parkside ex LMS Brakevan. Nice kit but the step boards are a pain

Having returned the Black Duchess I received tow more locos from the same client. Both needed to be renumbered (and renamed for the Duchess), detail packs fitting then weathered.
Black 5
One of two Saltley favourites. Not too dirty.
Boiler cladding dirt - its that coal dust/soot oil mix...sets like rock in real life.
New smokebox plate. I had to make this up using some Pacific Coat Models plates. New shedplate fitted.
Tow BR Standards for a customer. Both have had Zimo 645Rs sound chips fitted with stay alive units fitted into the tender, Both have a sugar cube speaker fitted under the chimney. Whilst I fitted the sound units someone else EM gauged the locomotives. Then I weathered them using Black and White photographs supplied by the customer to meet his weathering needs.
First up.. a Black Hornby 4MT 4-6-0
a bit of fairly dilute white poster paint to highlight some dribbling on the cylinde
Something a bit more modern... the first of 42 TTAs to be rewheeled in EM, couplings added and then dirtied.... staining on the side using powders "washed off" using the ink mix and a ladies make up stick the other side and the non ladder end all of these are standard Bachmann wagons. so only another 41 to go.
Not very often this happens but the ink has been drying too quickly today to allow me to work it into the nooks and crannies it needs to be - so I have been readying some mineral wagons for weathering. I bought these over a number of years ready built and they are a mix of Airfix and Parkside kits. Once complete they can be used on Herculaneum Dock or Cwmafon.
Using Model master decals numbering 16T and 24.5T BR mineral wagons is so easy compared to days of yore. They will be weathered insid
Due to other commitments I have not managed to undertake a lot of weathering recently ..but I have started to work through the backlog today starting with 10001.
This is a Bachmann model regauged to EM by Mike Edge. I have fitted a Legomanbiffo 37/0 sound chip and then weathered it.

I am part way through weathering some of my own tank wagons - an Airfix Class B and a Mainline 14t Class B
Here they are together before weathering:
unlike Mike Delamar I haven't changed the walkways or ladders on the Airfix kit and I forgot to paint over the restraining bars on the Mainline vehicle - I will come back to that in a later blog.
So a general wash of ink and water followed by powder - then running wet ink down from the filler and adding dry powder to this results in:
Mike Edge has been busy producing a "Super 40" for use on Carlisle. It is very, very heavy and has the "Co" bits on both bogies driven. My task..fit sound and "gentle" weathering
Sound.. Easy peasy as there is enough room to ge a Legomanbiffo Loksound V5 in and a speaker as well with no hacking or bodging to get it to fit!
Then a picture of a close sister engine (D335..this one is D334) in "Diesels on the London Midland"by Michael Welch gave a good starting point
With a sunny day an opportunity to revisit some weathering conducted by myself for me (makes a change!)
First up the Stanier Mogul.. I think it is now fully weathered. I must find a glue which sticks Bachmann cab doors on permanently. Any suggestions?
Next up another Bachmann product .. Royal Tank Corps ( renumbered then renamed and weathered
and a Model Loco Black 5. First one 45219.. needed finishing for ages..
Now I ne
I have had a short weathering session today. Having repainted a Bachmann Stanier Mogul (thanks to @Rowsley17D for selling me the loco) I have now weateherd it - well phase 1 has been done .. a bit more to do when I remember to fit the new Brass Front footsteps.. Doh!
and some POWsides/Slaters Private owners

So a bit of weathering done today on locomotives for Herculaneum Dock - it is appearing at Southampton Show at the end of this month in much changed format. More tank locos needed so:
First up a Hornby (weathering from Hornby provided by chicking brown paint on it) Stanier - now weathered in darker black for its owner Mike Edge.
and the other side
and my two 2-6-4Ts
42069
and 42083
and finally a curiosity - scratch built by my old man, chassis fettled by Mike Edge
apologies for
so can you spot the difference?
A Hornby Old Contemptibles and a comet kit built Old Contemptibles..
and
spot the speedo drive(!)
both are nice but the Comet one has a bit more presence
One of the best things about using the ink and water technique for base coat weathering is I can do it most of the year. As mentioned in one of my earlier blogs I had a problem with it being too warm to get the ink to flow where I wanted it to. On reflection it wasn't the temperature it was the humidity ( or lack of it) No problems this week - just a bit dark to take photos.
I will try and get some shots of some coaches currently being weathered as well as a couple of diesels. For these I us
A number of locos I have weathered or fitted sound to have appeared in the Jan 2019 Railway Modeller.
A couple of Heljan Co-Bos - regauged by Mike Edge then sound chips fitted (Digitrains), weathered and new pipework fitted
These work the "Condor" on the layout.
A DJH Clan - built by the late Alistair Rolfe (in EM) weathered by me .. and I think it has a Zimo sound chip fitted.
and a Caledonian Jumbo built by Mike Edge (in EM), weathered by me

Been re-gauging/fitting 3 link couplings and weathering a number of wagons this week.
First up examples of a group of unfitted vans,
Not sure about the "W" number on the van on the left as its a SOuthern Railways/BR design.
Next up some fitted vans
looks like both are Parkside kits.
A Gunpowder van (Hornby Dublo body on a Parkside chassis) and chalk marked Parkside van
An oil tanker (Peco Wonderful wagon)
A Bachmann Bogie Bolster C
and finally a Hornby Bogie Bolster A
