A Bird for Brent

One of the key missing classes of loco for Brent is the Bulldog / Bird.  With the class providing the assistance on the front of many workings.   Eventually I will need 4 bulldogs for assistance and a 5th for a freight turn.   a chance find one Facebook resulted in a purchase of a non running unidentified  etched kit built example (based on a couple of grainy photos)    the model arrived today and I have set to work.   Looking at the design it looks pretty old (X04 motor, lac

Coach Painting - Toplights and Sleeper

A lot of good progress on clearing the paint backlog today.   First up the ex LNWR composite getting a coat of LMR maroon.  I’m not overly keen on the final shade here, is it not a bit too much towards the pink end of the spectrum?   i think once I have added lining and logos etc I will give it a wash of a brown mix to tone it down.   If an LMS modeller going to the members day would like to swap a set of 1947 LMS coach logos / numbers for a GWR equivalent i would m

Centenary composite

Tonight I have cracked on with the last coach for my down Cornish Riveria formation, a composite again built with comet sides on a Hornby body. This is both for consistency with the rest of the take and as an easy way to add the window detail   Construction followed all the other build with one extra step. Comet have cocked up the forming of the etch, so it doesn’t have the same profile as the restaurant pair (it is flatter) so I had to reform the tumble Home.   Of course I only realise

County chassis part 3

With an afternoon spent taking no1 daughter to a birthday party, I haven’t managed to get as far as I would have liked on the county.   I have redone the con rods recessing filed down Markits crank pin nuts into the rod (then re testing to ensure it still works).   With this complete I prepared the left hand slide bars, again they are 1mm too short. I have checked and they are also too short for the Saint. I am going to unsolder the bars and either add a spacer so that they are 1mm further

4547 wartime black

Now that the loco has been fitted with new buffer beam numbers, GWR logos and yellow route indicators. It now just needs some etched plates (and more to the point I need enough locos to make a narrow planet order worth while)   I have two more black locos to do, my saint and hall.

4292 finally has a chimney

Waiting for me in the post when arriving home from work today was a small packet from PDK, most of which is now put away for Monday evening modelling (when looking after the children for my wife's evening out means the only modelling is confined to the spare bedroom rather than the garage.). This should see steps added to 4025s tender, fall plates added to both my granges, the bell fitted to the front of 6000 and a chimney for my manor.   It also included a 42xx chimney to fit in place of the

Yet more renunbering

carrying on with the renumbering, there are now 3 more locos ready for the layout (almost).   First up was 6000, finishing up from where I left off last night. The first job was to repaint the rest of the underframe to get rid of the remaining elements of the lining. While I had the paint out I also had a crack at weathering the silver parts of the cylinders, adding an oily gleam and toning down the brightness. Finally the brake rodding, vac pipe and whatever the brass bit is below the cylin

Wartime Brown GWR Coaches

A key requirement of modelling the post war scene is to have plenty of stock still wearing wartime liveries, a task that is progressing well on the loco front (with the Grange, 42xx and Austerity in black), but nothing on the coaches. So over the past couple of nights (with very little real modelling time to finish the DCC conversions) I have made a start on a few resprays.   First of all what is wartime brown? There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer, ranging from almost red oxide to

Centenary Conversions

Ever since I bought an Airfix Centenary break from a second hand trader at the Calne model ex as a child, I've always had a bit of a thing about Centenary coaches (and the Cornish Riviera Limited)   Whilst the Limited was formed of different coaches in my period (and gives justification to a handful of Hornby Hawksworths), the Centenary coaches were used on the London to Western services. A little selective compression based on the 1946 Maurice Earley photo, gives me a formation comprised of

Comet large window first pt1

While the H26 sits in the queue awaiting painting (along with the Hornby conversions for H33 and an ex railroad D95) I have been getting on with the next coach in the todo pile, a Comet A20 Large window first.   This is intended primarily for my down Cornish Reveria Express set (noting that the post war formation's name had changed from limited to Express.)   This is a full comet kit from eBay, and will be built to the same standard as the H26 (i.e. All hinges and drop lights fitted, but onl

Wartime brown coaches part 3

Over the past few weeks I have tried brush painting the roof of the brown sunshine stock third to see how it looks, in terms of time taken and overall finish it was not good enough to roll out on the rest of my coaches so the airbrush will need to be set up.   It is however now almost finished, with the transfers applied to the first side. The class logos and GWR crest are by HMRS, while the orange lining is from Replica. I never thought I would be using up my spare OHLE warning lines, but i

A wartime Grange 6829

One of the key requirements of modelling the post war GWR is to ensure the loco fleet contains plenty of stock still in the wartime black livery. Now ideally I would have access to documents listing the last visit to the works for the GWR fleet from which I could determine if a loco had visited the works after the war or not.   Sadly I don't have anything like this, so I'm left with a combination of antidotal evidence (the black pannier), photographic evidence (Kingsbridge no. 2 BSet) and

Comet H26 part 2

Tonight saw the basics of the chassis formed, everything went together well but the solebar looks very deep compared to photos.   This is made worse by an error I've made on the body, after not reading the instructions properly I've soldered the base plate flush with the bottom of the ends ?and used a shed load of solder). As such the chassis sits below the body and the solebars are even deeper still.   I'm going to have to hold the bogies tomorrow and see how it looks coupled to a Hawks

B-set E116 - Construction starts (and improving the E140)

Having made good progress on my planed revision for the day, I have spent a little time this afternoon working on the B set   I modified the locations for the bogie mounts, increasing the width of the brackets with scrap evergreen strip. This gave a much bigger base to glue to aiding keeping them straight. A length of brass was evo sticked to the sides to ensure they stay straight.   The roof is a very poor fit (in that it just does not fit!) So far I have thinned the ends of the roof an

Kirk Monster

Its been a few months since I last managed any modelling, but after finishing early yesterday afternoon I've managed to get a couple of hours sat out side with TMS on the radio and a beer in hand.   First up was some painting, I am determined to get my D95 breaks finished before the new Hornby model comes out (otherwise the temptation to just buy the better Hornby model and avoid the painting will be too much…) So out with a can of Games Workshop “Skull White” primer, and I now have 2 breaks,

2220 building the Finney kit

A while back I started a detailing project on an old mainline 2251 with the intention of adding new buffer beams and a new cab amounts other detailing.   Recently I found a Finney 2251 kit on eBay for a good price with no chassis with a motor and high level gear box. Given the need for the moror and gearbox (along with the castings for the chimney etc), it was too good to miss.   The plan is that building this loco will be good practice before I build my Finney Dean Goods and Mitchell Man

dean D14 part 3

Next up was the roof, prior to taking drastic action I decided to have a go at the roof. I started by using a couple of Lima ballast weights to pin the roof flat to the workbench. I then glued the end pieces into position, then glued the clesterory side into position. In the centre the roof had bowed by 6mm below the datum point. Once the ends of the side were in position I the forced this up and glued into place   I did find the bowing along the length of the side compounded the pro

Berkeley castle - bringing forward to 1947

Finally Berkeley castle has been completed, The below footplate lining was scraped off with a flat knife blade, along with microsol as a softener.   Moving onto the tender, I had hoped to keep the original gw arms crest, however after removing the great western lettering I realised it was not in the right place for the new logo so that had to go as well. Again the method was gentle scraping with multiple applications of microsol.   Once complete HMRS transfers were used to rebrand the te

5813 - window detailing

A while back I was inspired by a photo of a 57xx pannier on Paul Marshall-Potter's Albion Yard blog, I decided that I would replace the rear windows on my pannier and 58xx with the Mainly Trains etch. This is a nicely done Ian rice designed part which comes with enough to do a good few locos. It's still a bit too flat compared to the prototype, but having the glass behind the etch should look a lot better than having window bars which are a scale 3 inches thick!   After a lot of procrastina

Berkeley Castle and 3863

One project which has sat in the to do pile for a long time has been my castle   The intention is to take what was Tintagnal Castle and renumber to 4085 Berkeley Castle which will be partnered with the Hawksworth tender from this yeas GW castle release. The tender from Tintagnal will then be used with the later loco from Wellington to produce Nunny Castle. Both locos have been picked for the names rather than the use (so I hope they will fit prototypically with a future layout with red coded

Coopercraft GWR Van and N13 open

As previously mentioned this the body has already been built following the coopercraft, all that remained was to build the chassis and detail.   I have started off by adding weight, I cant stand the liquid stuff, preferring to work with lead sheet. so a 3 bits of lead were cut to fit the 3 recesses in the floor, this places the majority of the weight directly above the suspension units. (to save time the second build has it fitted inside the van.....)   The solebars have been filed down to

More on 5512's new wheels

While my fiancée is out for the evening, I've taken advantage of a nights un interrupted modelling. So after taking the dog on a very long walk to ensure she passed out, I dug out the 4575 conversion to try and finish it off.   I will come back and add some photos tomorrow, as the paint is currently drying...   Starting off with the slide bar, The original pin on which the connecting rod (please correct me if I am using the wrong terminology) is linked to the slide bar was a larger diameter

5512 p4 conversion

As is usually the case, now that CIMA has restarted my modelling output has disappeared. Thankfully this is the last one, and in a months time it will all be over.   This evenings plans to sit and watch the Arsenal, quickly lost their attraction after yet another dismal performance. So I figured dig out something to work on.   My first thoughts were to finish off 3863, only to realise that I had forgotten to buy the washers needed to modify the con rods. This will now have to wait until I

Pannier Improvements - 7723

Having reached the limit of work on 5813 (at least until I am able to get a small diameter drill so that I can get the handrails drilled and fitted) I have decided to crack on with another project, 7723 from a Mainline Pannier tank.   This was decided by a single undated photo of a pannier in one of the Cheddar books which did not have a BR smokebox number plate, I will also be following a similar route on a second pannier (all be it working from the more recent Bachmann body). I'm undecided o

45xx 5512 in GWR - P4 Conversion

While I try and get my head around how to set up the compensation in my etched kit for 4573, I have got on with a little bit of work on my other 45xx, which will be finished as 5512 in post war GWR livery.   Why 5512? It was chosen due to the number of photos in the 1947/48 period that are published in the Cheddar books, including two photos showing it with LMS coaches (a rake that will be modelled at some point).   As for the model, The starting point is a Bachmann angled tank model in Gre
