Nice to see this work being undertaken - we used engines like this in the merch for generators. You refer to crankcase explosions, it is of course the secondary explosion that is the big one, after the first one errr blows the doors off, if you don't have the relief valves.
I hate seeing old engines at shows on the interweb with plexiglass crankcase covers so the punters can see the whirly bits, if they ever do have an explosion it'll be a big one. the large marine engines (90cm bore) I worked on have explosion relief doors a couple of feet in diameter, as well as 'oily mist detectors' to try to prevent a crankcase explosion in the first instance.
Nice work, keep it up!

I once joined a ship on Christmas eve. Being all heart, sailing was delayed an hour until 1pm so we could have Christmas dinner before stand-by! Bl**dy shipowners....
Good luck up North at this time of year - very grey.

Gruff, what is the size of your shed/man cave/that layout plan please? It's not a million miles away from the sort of expanded Minories (Maxories?) I have in mind for my currently vapourware SR 3rd rail urban layout.
Cheers, Neil

I'm a little stunned to find this blog - having mentioned you on my 'older inspirational layouts' thread, here you are, still inspiring! Wow.
When I was a young lad you were one of my heroes, I awaited news of the Aire Valley in RM regularly with bated breath. I still have the articles, and I think I mentioned C-oil on the thread too. Thank you for all the inspiration you provided me with back then, and it's great to read your tales here of the locos and stock. Keep them coming please!

Another vote for green. As for the transporter bridge, my north-east mind did a flip for a moment until I remembered the other one..... 😖
