  1. Here's a cracking offer if you're considering going digital: https://pocketmags.com/offer/oct18eshot
  2. If we want to grow the hobby, we need high street model shops. Hornby, Bachmann and many other manufacturers know this, hence they are making a real effort to support shops of all sizes. The new Hornby team are working really hard on this but Rome wasn't built in a day...
  3. I love this topic. There are some great points being raised. Thank you. I just wanted to comment on the first part of this post. You're right, whilst there is a demand for print magazines, supermarkets will continue stocking them. The problem is, magazine sales across the board are in decline. There's so much free stuff on the internet that more and more people are ditching magazines in favour of free content, regardless of its quality. All Mr Supermarket cares about is how much money each square metre generates. Will the space dedicated to magazines generate as much money as it would if used for baked beans, for example? A lot of supermarkets see magazines as important in generating footfall, hoping that these people spend money elsewhere. But, as magazine sales decline it's logical that the smaller magazines will be the first to be dropped. BRM benefits from having it's own distribution department within Warners, rather than use a third-party. We can react far quicker and put in place a strategy to grow our monetary value to supermarkets. We are genuinely seeing our sales increase. However, digital magazines and subscriptions are seeing our biggest growth. In an ideal world we want everything to grow: newstrade, digital and subscriptions. The print magazine certainly isn't second best. We simply use the benefits of a digital version to add 'extras' that we can't do with print: extra video, extra images etc. However, print provides benefits that digital can't offer, physical gifts being one. Then, add subscriptions into the mix, these readers have other benefits such as an initial 'welcome' gift, a super low price introductory offer and a lower price each year compared to buying from newsagents, plus free delivery and money off our show tickets. Each form has benefits... BRM has other benefits that guarantee our longevity, this being websites: RMweb and World-of-Railways. We're currently working on some exciting projects for both. Watch this space.
  4. Hi Robin, We have something in the pipeline. Not exactly as you describe, but a half-way house I suppose. Steve
  5. This is a really interesting point. Publishing is changing and we, as publishers, need to change with it. The advertising model is a great example. Paper advertising is tried and tested and it works! Just look at the number of adverts in BRM and the other three main railway modelling magazines. However, digital advertising brings with it some exciting possibilities. Take RMweb as an example. We can guarantee how many times your advert is shown, we can host it in a forum(s) of your choice so you're targeting the right people, we can have it shown in specific locations, we can have it shown more at certain times of day...it is, in my opinion, the most effective way of advertising. Email Newsletters achieve an incredible response. Some adverts get 300+ 'clicks' per email newsletter. I suppose what suits one person may not suit another...exciting times though, different advertising solutions for different people.
  6. Surely that warrants a £9.99 cover price.?!
  7. This is a really good point and one that I 100% agree with. This is why the price will only increase when we feel the Bumper Pack warrants it. You'll soon see what I mean. But, it won't suit everyone. Thanks to everyone for your viewpoints and understanding.
  8. As with most industries, publishing isn’t immune to increased costs. One such example is a recent substantial price increase on paper with further increases expected in the not too distant future. In most instances we’ve absorbed these cost increases. For a number of years BRM has included a free DVD, something that is very expensive to produce. Adding value of the magazine ‘package’ is something that has worked incredibly well for the magazine. We want to take this one step further in coming months. I don’t want to give the game away too early, but over the coming six months newsstand readers will see what I mean… There will be times that we feel these ‘Bumper Packs’ justify a small price increase. When you see what we have planned we believe you’ll agree. The recent issue of BRM + DVD + 3D magazine + 3D glasses is a package that we feel justifies a higher cover price. Subscribers get different benefits. Most subscribers started their subscription with a substantial free gift (usually with an RRP of £40+) or an incredibly low year 1 price offer. Their Direct Debit is then at a much lower rate than should they buy the magazine from shops. Most subscribers are paying approx. £3 per copy, benefit from free delivery to their door and money-off our show tickets. The benefits of subscribing are different to the benefits from buying at a shop. What suits one person may not suit another… Digital Editions are different still. The RRP is lower and they benefit from a load of extra video, content and occasionally free magazines. I hope this goes someway to explaining.
  9. Even the best railway modellers started somewhere and for most it was with a plastic model kit. This is why we've asked Phil Parker to put together this easy-to-follow guide to building your first plastic model kit. And to make the process even easier we've negotiated a deal for you to get all of the tools you need to start kit building yourself. So, read our guide to make this: And, take advantage of our special offer to get this: To read the full article and take advantage of our special offer, click here.
  10. I've just been on the phone to Simon Kohler at Hornby. He said that both Hornby and the supplier hold their hands' up that they made a mistake and send their apologies to everyone affected. Hornby will be notifying all retailers and ask that anyone who has purchased the loco to contact Hornby customer services on 01843 233512 - they will require proof of purchase. Hornby will then send out a replacement tender body ASAP. He says that delivery of these is estimated at eight weeks but they are working hard to bring that timescale forward. As a side point, I met with both Lyndon Davies and Simon Kohler yesterday and left Margate feeling really optimistic that this 'team' will transform the company! They admit that it's not an overnight fix but plans are in the place to make Hornby great again. Their honesty was refreshing, as were their plans for the future. Watch this space...
  11. I wish that was the case in real life. Only kidding Howard.
  12. Still not sure about Digital Editions? Watch this...

  14. Yes, if you're currently getting WoR emails you will continue to do so.
  15. Email brm@warnersgroup.co.uk and I'll look into why this hasn't been actioned.
  16. If you've already registered, log-in and then click on the link and follow the instructions.
  17. RMweb and BRM are part of the same company that provides this website to 100,000+ modellers (at a great deal of cost). Whilst the RMweb email list includes opt-in and opt-out preferences, it doesn't fully comply with GDPR to a level that we, as a company, are happy with. We take GDPR extremely seriously, which is why from May 20th all emails to the RMweb list have stopped. If you're registered on World-of-Railways for BRM E-Newsletters and communication this fully complies with GDPR.
  18. Hi, You should qualify for this. It's digital so there are no geographic restrictions. Any problems, email us at brm@warnersgroup.co.uk
  19. It's a problem that Pocketmags are aware of but their time is being spent on GDPR - despite the world knowing it has been coming, they are apparently playing catch-up. Until it's sorted, I'd recommend you click on the Youtube logo within the video screen and watch it that way.
  20. Thanks for your honesty. I appreciate that BRM might not be to your taste, but it's a free issue and it showcases what makes the digital version different to the print magazine. You have nothing to lose... No need to feel guilty about using the forum. You're right, it costs us a lot of money to keep the website up-and-running and the advertising revenue doesn't get anywhere near to us breaking even. But, RMweb is good for the hobby which is good for everyone within in. We do have some exciting plans for the future though... Hi Jerry, The original offer email was sent to the RMweb email list. To qualify for your free issue of BRM you need to either have, or create an account on World-of-Railways. That will be why your email address and password aren't recognised.
  21. Thanks for posting. The original offer email was sent to the RMweb email list. To qualify for your free issue of BRM you need to either have, or create an account on World-of-Railways. That will be why your email address and password aren't recognised.
  22. Hi all, I'd better start by saying that print copies of BRM on-sale in shops do not include a FREE DVD this month. But, ALL BRM subscribers will still get a DVD and ALL Digital Edition readers will get access to the DVD footage as normal. Next month's magazine will include a free DVD on all issues. If you love the DVD and want to guarantee getting it every issue, now is the time to subscribe! Talking of the Digital Edition, we've just enjoyed our best-ever sale with last month's new-look digital magazine. I can honestly say that this issue is even better. There are 8 extra videos, 50 extra layout images, a bonus layout article and two more trackplans. The Digital Edition goes on-sale tomorrow (May 18). The print edition goes on-sale on May 24th. 24. We're feeling rather pleased with ourselves this month. As many of you will know, we've been working hard to further improve the BRM Digital Edition by adding a load of extra content that lends itself to a digital magazine. But, we knew we could make it better... a lot better. BRM May sees the launch of our new-look Digital Edition. You'll find a serious amount of extra content (as listed below), presented in a much clearer and easier-to-use format. We've even got interactive DCC Concepts and Metcalffe models adverts, both with video plus with a click of a button (or touch of a finger for all tablet users) you can buy the Bachmann Baldwin from Rails of Sheffield at the end of the review video. If you've never tried a digital magazine (or BRM) this is the month to take a look. It's on-sale NOW! Click here to buy or subscribe. The print edition goes on-sale on Thursday, April 26th.
