  1. For all the faffing about with touchscreens, it's an improvement on SWMBO's previous method of selecting in-car entertainment while driving, namely changing CDs (not too bad) and then reading the tracklist on the case. I tried to cure her of the latter part but not very successfully as I'm not in her car very often. Fortunately her previous and current cars don't have players.
  2. Don't know. Same scale so maybe? This is the one I found https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276425494804?chn=ps&_ul=GB Also, Revell marketed Italeri kits for several years so that would be the same kit.
  3. "spirit-level app". Well, you learn something new everyday. No use on my dumbphone though! Fortunately I have several of various sizes, and more usefully I know where at least one of them is.
  4. ISTR a graffito in a carriage that made the trivia news, "This is the Age of the Train, ours is 106".
  5. The Germans got round this problem by using national flags. All the leading vehicles of the attacking formations had the flag draped over the engine deck, bonnet or roof. Red with a white centre, they were highly visible from above and the Luftwaffe was clear to attack anything in front of the lead vehicles. Thus when communications failed or the artillery couldn't keep up (being almost all horse-drawn in the "Blitzkrieg" period) the Air support was still available. This did require achieving air superiority first.
  6. I am struggling with the fact that there are people* whose job it is to monitor daily what various Royal women are wearing and refer back to earlier records of what was worn when and where, and then write about the results. Not only do they apparently get paid for this but get into various prestige events to do it. I am aware there is an audience for this stuff, but would they notice or care if the content was never generated in the first place? *Apparently more than one.
  7. SWMBO (60), already mobility impaired, had a nasty fall resulting in a hip replacement. She was unable to drive for several months and had to change her Motability car for one with higher ground clearance, a Qashqai. She realised she had developed some bad habits and also was lacking confidence and becoming nervous in certain urban traffic situations. She took a series of refresher lessons with a instuctor who targeted her particular concerns. She's now much happier and confident.
  8. At Eastleigh, trains onto and off the Fareham line and down stopping trains for Southampton use either side of the island platform as required, often changing at a few minutes notice. Passengers on the train don't know which side will be platformed until the train pulls in. No doubt this happens elsewhere. Charter trains use this platform.
  9. Bridge number plate, Restricted Clearance Sign....
  10. Just answer "Security" and they hang up. Works every time.
  11. There is a park near here, with a main tarmac path along it that is also part of a National Cycle Route, which I used to use as part of my cycle commute. A gaggle of female dog walkers used to stand on it, some with dogs loose, some on leads. I used to ride up to them, then pointedly swerve round them on the grass. On day a loose dog started to jump up at me. Being careful not to swear I shouted something like "Get down you stupid animal!", to which the owners reply was "He's not an animal, he's a dog."
  12. It hadn't occurred to me before that Macavity is an ideal name for a cat; "If it fits, I sits."
  13. On the subject of young working class women having a full extraction and a set of dentures, this was often done as a wedding present. The bride's father would pay for it, so the happy couple wouldn't be burdened by such costs later.
  14. No, he would originally have come with a wheelbarrow or similar. I had one in the '50s who was pushing this: https://collection.powerhouse.com.au/object/117352
  15. On elargement it clearlyhas a guard's ducket, so the LMS origin may be likely.
  16. Winchester, the B3044 Stockbridge Road passes under the north end.
  17. I've just watched an old movie on YouTube that TheQ might find amusing, re the history of radar. It was Radar Secret Service, a b/w B movie from 1950, about the use of radar in crime detection. I never knew it was so far developed then that it could produce a TV quality image from a vehicle mounted set! Not to mention Uranium 238 being transported in an ordinary van.
  18. If the two "main lines" are the up and down lines of the same route the land between would be railway land. Lacking access, it would probably not be let for grazing and maintained like other trackside land*. If there was a station or railway housing nearby it might be used for staff allotments, with a private foot crossing for access. *So for a modern layout, covered with trees.
  19. Barrels from Cork's Franciscan Well brewery, brewers of Shandon Stout. https://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/31012/jameson-caskmates-stout-edition https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franciscan_Well
  20. FIFY * presumably not the one he was towing.
  21. My Dad's first job after school (mid 1930s) included a experience that would have made a good training film. He was a clerk at the Hercules bicycle factory in Birmingham where the office overlooked the factory floor. Frames were assembled by brazing, using blowtorches. Good practice is to turn the pressure down when not in use so it gives a yellow flame rather than a less visible blue jet. One of the workers put his torch down without turning it down, in a patch of sunlight from the roof windows, so the blue jet was invisible. Another man walked past wearing oily overalls, which caught fire resulting in fatal burns. I was told this story at a quite early age when he was repairing some plumbing. Never forgot.
  22. We are having bin-related issues here at the moment. The Council have been hovering close to "bankruptcy" so have been looking for economies everywhere. The bin men have for years worked on "job and finish" so they did their allotted rounds as fast as possible and went home early. Someone has decided that they were not working their full contracted hours and that was "wasting money". Bear in mind that the rounds are fixed, so they can't start on the next day's round as the bins won't be out. They have been instructed, following a 'Consultation' with their union (note, not an 'agreement') to work their full hours, take all their breaks, at the depot, or a location with toilets, and to follow all rules re handling bins, including push, don't pull, no side waste and only one at a time. Now, many areas are getting collections a day or more late and some areas haven't had one for a while. Commentators on the local press and community websites are generally blaming the unions or the sitting council, rather than nationwide cuts in council support. Having worked for said council for 30 years I have encountered the sort of middle management 'jobsworth' that would make this decision. My line manager could run rings round them
  23. They were a hire purchase company so actually owned the car until paid in full.
  24. So your bags of general waste NEVER split or leak?
