Cheers

Nice to see a girder bridge done properly with the girders sitting on the abutment shelf. You see too many with floating girders!

Hi All

Thanks for your comments. I tried over the last week to do some modelling, the first since last April and have now put most of the side beams onto the contol cabin. It has taken for to long with having to take items of and then redo them. Also now found that I cannot hold the camera steady. The only good news is that work has started on the cutting down of some trees to make way for the new railway shed 40ft by 15ft it is hoped which will make way for a new home for Glen Gillie and Bridge of Muir, so I will be able to at least play trains if I can't make them.

Here is a pic of the scratch built road bridge on my N-Gauge layout East Lancashire lines. It has been painted maroon since this pic was taken. It is made out of styrene sheet

It is also on a board joint and the deck lifts off.

Hi All

I have been trying to do some modelling this last few weeks as my hands are a little more steady. Anyway here are a few shots of the new bridge showing the inside of the cabin and some workon the other spans. If anyone is intrested I am at the Colwyn Bay show this week end with aload of my models and hopefuly doing some more work on the bridge. Be nice to see you there.

Hi All

Well here are a few shots of the work that I did at the show this last weekend. I am still a little shaky but a lot better that I was a month or so ago and this is reflected in the standard of the workmanship. Will post a few more in the next few days.

Hi All

Well here are a few more shots of the work done so far on the bridge. I feel as if I am taking over this thread with this build so I am thinking of moving it to my workbench thread but I would like some feed back from the members over this. In the mean time many thanks to those that have said they like it and the workman ship eg. Neil and Alan Downes.

Hi All

Well a little more has been done on the model.  On the actual bridge a gas main was laid along it in the 1950's and this was cut when the bridge hit. It served about 6,000 homes and work places on the Welsh side of the river and it took some days before the service was restored.  To represent this I have fitted a pipe along the decking and this is what is shown here.

Hi All

At the swing bridge end of the bridge the gas main was taken down inside the fixed pier in the river and then out near the base into the river and then out onto the river bank. This is how I have done it.

Hi All

Well still feeling a little under after being in Hosp. for a small eye op Yesterday and then again in on Thrusday for further tests.. Anyway have found out that the gas main did not go down inside the pier  but went along the outside so I have modified it to take this into account.

In the mean time have done some more work on the clading and the gas main .

That's a absolute master piece Peter . I wish I had the skills with plastic that you have . I originally started to make the bridge on my layout out of plastic strip but soon realised I wasn't going to be able to make anything presentable. Most of the early attempts ended up either stuck to my fingers or the work bench or both :( Keep up the excellent work and please keep us all up to date with the progress.

All the best with your hospital visits , Kev

Hi All

Well have done a little more on the bridge mainly the end viaduct completlting trhe arches and the fitting of the gas main along the top and connecting it to the steel part.

Hi All

After a couple of days of further tests in hospital this last week waiting for biopsy results to confirm no 'C' so I have been doing some work on the bridge.

Have been making the turntable part of the swing bridge. This is being made from discs cut in plasticard and glued back to back with spacers to give the required depth and then ribbing inserted. The bottom disc has the wheels that the bridge rotates on and these have been made using flanges rubbed down to take the rivet details off from the Knightwing pipe fittings. Not strictly accurate but is giving a fair representation of the mechanism.

I still feel as thouth am taking this thread over so I am going to start a new thread on the layout but at present don't know what to call it ie Wye Bridge, Severn Bridge, Lyndley Bridge - any suggestions?

The other thing I just cannot sort out is how you put in links from one thread to another, am a complete dummy when it comes to that side of computers, tghe same as have just bought a new Canon EOS80D complete with 3 lenses and am waiting for the 'Dummies' book which is due out so I can use it. Just doesn't seem to be anyone now local to me that is into railways so gets very lonely with Wendy out at work.

Anyway here are a few shots.

For my Grindleford layout, I've built both a tunnel portal, and a road bridge.

Here are the prototype structures:

And here are the models:

Both are built using embossed styrene sheet over a plasticard base structure.

Another thread I've just discovered! Very inspirational modelling on here.

My own efforts from "Crinan":

The Canal Swing Bridge based on Banavie, built from plasticard strip and Evergreen section, painted and weathered with Humbrol enamels. It does swing but the mechanism needs work. Point rodding (Wills) is a recent addition (not fitted in first photo).

The road bridge, based on that at Kyle of Lochalsh. Plasticard again with card road surface. Painted with Humbrol enamels with Greenscene textured concrete and tarmac paint.

Looks superb Peter, come on a fair bit since we chatted at Colwyn MRC's show! Hope all went well with hospital. Have you got a name for your new layout yet?

Martyn.

Here's an unusual one, based on a "fake" cable stay pedestrian bridge over a storm drain on the Costa Brava. I say fake, because the prototype is massively over-engineered for what it is. The cables only appear to support a wooden bench that beachgoers routinely use to get the sand out of their shoes! This was my first attempt at scratchbuilding anything. Apologies for the over-scale cables but it was N gauge. Prototype photos below.
