York Model Railway Show - Easter 2016

I enjoyed the show very much. York still is one of the best shows in the country.

I also got one of those n gauge back to backs for my HOe trains. I also had an excellent blether with the Hornby live steam chaps. Might bring my locos for a run next time.

The buses worked out fine, I was lucky, there was one outside the station when I arrived.

Oh and I treated myself to a Neo Trn2 airbrush.

Cath and myself popped in to assist on various stands; she on Shawplan and the bookstall, myself on Margarine Street, the DEMU stand and Ken Gibbons understated masterpiece 'Port Pennan'. That ticks all the boxes for me- small, only 2 points, easy on the eye and bags of operating potential......

The show itself- overall, very good, though with all the little nooks and crannies I'm not sure I saw it all! It wasnt till nearly 4 30 that i found Ian Futers, and i never did find Phil Sutton! Suggestion for visitors today- start at the top and head down!

Thinking about it, where was Phil Suttons stand - not that I was interested in any of the 24s announced so far but would have asked on the likelihood of Experiment.

I asked too as I purchased the blue version to repaint as Experiment, not realising it was the incorrect body variant. The latest green one won't do either. The correct version will be released at some point. Not sure if he will do it in RTC colours though.

I visited on Sunday.  As others have advised, I started at the top and worked downwards.

It was good to see the Potter Heigham guys out in force with the return of Potterbourne, one of the better executed GWR BLTs around.  Its creator, Josh993, was found nearby looking longingly at a 7mm layout which may or may not give a clue as to his future plans.  Later I met Margery Street for the first time, marking a welcome return for Judge Dread.  Not for the first time World's End impressed me with the way that the topography descends from left to right, a common configuration not modelled as often as it might be.  I liked Ravens Rock, inspired by Welsh narrow gauge, for its use of height - also not done as often as it should be.  Ullypug's Clevedon certainly captured the ramshackle WC&P and for a bonus there was a short outbreak of merriment centred on happy memories of Adge Cutler and Fred Wedlock!  Brixham Bay showed, as N gauge often does, the effectiveness of this scale in showing trains in the landscape to best advantage.  Borchester Market seemed to be behaving itself - not always the case - but I wonder what its builder Frank Dyer would have thought of tension lock couplings.  In all I thought the standard and diversity of the layouts was well at the top end.

To my unbridled joy there was a distinct absence of stalls peddling junk.  Club second-hand stalls are exempt from this label and of course it depends what you mean by junk.  What I mean by it is the sort of merchandise that traders hope some mug will take off their hands.  With a wide range of specialist traders and a more token presence of box shifters the trade balance was very much what I would hope to find.  To judge by the amount of space occupied by Squires there are still more people making things than some fear.  It was good to see Derek "Eileen" Russan back at work after his recent operation.  The significant presence of demonstrators was well chosen and there were several tempting booksellers as well.

Did I really pay only £1.20 for a cuppa?  Pinch me, I'm dreaming.  My cousin and cousin-in-law had Sunday lunch and enjoyed it.  I brought sandwiches, but who knows what will happen next year?  With much nattering and socialising it was 4.30 pm before I left.  Had any inmates spotted my RMeb name badge there could have been more ...

Came up from Brighton for the show, ( that I had some work to do at the in laws was pure coincidence )which was very enjoyable and very busy Saturday morning. Didn't spend very much either which was unusual for me, just a couple of books.

You must try the sandwiches from the snack bar next to the main restaurant on the top floor. They really are a cut above.

They are the only reason I go to York each year. The rest of the show is rubbish.

Tappa and I returned safely from York after a very enjoyable weekend. Both our other operators Bungus the Fogeyman and Bezzy Oppo brought a whole new meaning to the expression "flying high". Our thanks must go out to (in no particular order) to the organisers, the stewards, the ladies in the tea room, the extra operators we had, the RMWeb visitors,(Chrisf and Newbryford) and the public at large for their kind remarks.

Now to try and fit and get to work the sound unit I purchased from the one and only Charles Petty.

Excellent show again. I'd particularly like to thank the kind gent on the organisers stand who lent me his mobile as an accessible payphone couldn't be found. It was nice to have an all too brief (due to my time constraints) chat with Tony Wright about getting started with soldering. Those Sutton Loco Works 24s looked and sounded stunning too.

Re phone. No problem.

From the organisers a big thank you to everyone who attended in any capacity; you all helped to make this another excellent show. Planning is already in hand for the 55th Show in 2017 ( 15 - 17 April)

I could not attend this year, so would people please post pictures or links of this year's York show? One way RMWeb could be improved is to have a separate forum where shows and event picture galleries (or links) could be posted after the show.

Following a plea for photos, I only took some of "World's End" as I was so impressed with the quality of the buildings. More can be found on Pete Goss' website.

And a big thankyou to Big Dave in the Treasurer's office.....first time ever; an extra pair of hands on break-down Monday! I got up to the second floor on Monday morning for the first time since last Thursday (putting tables/cloths out). Thanks to all.

I have not been able to get to York for a few years now but I too think that this show has probably got the best catering set up of any I have attended. OK it is the racecourse Contractors but the Restaurant is excellent a very busy indeed and the space is very pleasant. Yes, the sarnies are a cut above and well worth the trip to the top floor.

may I request more pics please and many thanks for the ones posted so far.

I would agree with all the positive comments about the food.

Saturday Lunchtime

However as I fancied a pint of drought/keg bitter with my sandwich, this proved impossible as the only thing they could offer was larger

or bottled/canned beer.

So no draught/keg beer or Guinness/Murphys
