Yet more permanent way work.

A search through some tubs proved fruitful this afternoon as I found a tub of fine ballast.

Firstly some prep work was necessary. I taped up the tie-bar areas of the points and filled all the little dropper holes around the wiring.

The next bit was tricky and I think a step by step is worth posting. No doubt this has been explained before on RMweb.

A few years back I purchased a box of Peco electrofrog points from eBay for a very nice sum. These are however older and differ somewhat from Peco's more recent offerings.

The flangways are quite gappy and some of my stock was misbehaving on the approaches into Exchange.

The solution is to reduce the excess gap through the check rails.

The difference  between the older type (on the left) and the newer type can be seen very clearly. The older types have all metal check rails which look better.

927574296_Exchangeballast(2).JPG.20e4ca79bd9b32dbe366034f06a9d3ee.JPG

Firstly I took measurements of the flangeways.

The difference is about 0.25mm. So some 0.010' x 0.060" (0.25x1.5mm) styrene  seemed suitable.

Hopefully I'll find some time to over spay this with the glue mixture.

I also sanded all the paint off of the rail tops on Queensbury today, using some fingernail emery boards donated from Mrs. S. because I can't find my Peco track rubber anywhere.

Thanks for following my very slow progress

Shaun.

PS. The rather scary looking can in the first pic is a very good organic winter ale from an Oregon brewer in Portland. Thoroughly recommended too.

Hi Julian.

The first couple were trial and error of course but once I figured that the side of the check rail needed a burnish it went smoothly.

What i didn't explain was that I pushed quite a selection of stock back and forth through the junction, some of which has Keen Maygib wheels and Dapol types. These wheel sets especially on stock with a 9 foot wheel base or 8 foot bogies proved most problematic. Amazing what a quarter of a mill of plastic can do!

After curing myself of social anxiety (a by-product of self isolation), with a trip to the dentist on Friday, I ventured further afield yesterday on a grocery run and to pick up our new freezer. Whilst in Medford I took the opportunity to visit the hobby store (first time since Christmas).

They had in stock rail paint pens, fine ballast and a Woodland Scenics track scrubber. Still have not found my Peco version.

Two paint pens were not cheep. The weathered track tie (Sleeper) color has been used to touch up some rail sides and the rust one held just right with a finger on the rail run along each side to pick out all the rail chairs.

Thank you John.

The cover picture is of Queensbury 3 arch bridge. A real boon in that it shows the platform support brackets!

Somewhere deep in a box I have a sprue of Prototype models LMS station canopy brackets that look just like that!

Anyway I'll definitely be adding a copy to my book collection at some point.

The Gresley twin set has been assembled and last night I added all the glazing.

There's still a few more details to add. I'm having trouble springing the buffers though. I sourced these from old PC model kits but the sole bar locating ribs  on the underside of the Kirk floors get in the way!

I will post more pictures of this coach set when it's finished.

Due to freezing cold weather desk top kitchen table modeling has ensued.

Building coaches from kits gives the perfect opportunity to add commuters and day-trippers.

A selection of seated persons from all walks of life were de-burred and stuck to a scrap of foam board, I hit this with a coat of rattle can dark mat camouflage brown, suitable for plastics (well that’s what it says on the can).

These chaps are actually 1/80 circus crowd I found at a show here quite a few years ago now.

Same for the dames!

This mob are Airfix civilians, not my favorite type of plastic but once painted and seated in the compartments the paint will stay put.

Well worth an afternoons work don’t you think?

Time to clear away the paints so that I can populate that twin set.

Excellent, very nicely done.  When I saw the first picture I thought you had gone into war gaming with soldiers in trenches.  (Sorry, I am getting old.)

Did you download and make all those pictures and mirrors on the coaches?  The rest of us are going to need luggage on the luggage racks next just to keep up!  :)

Hi,

I had to read that line twice!  For a moment I had a vision of a maiden aunt wearing her twin set with obligatory pearls!

Thank you.  The mirrors were punched out of shiny foil sticky tape using a ring hole punch and the pictures are all N gauge posters that came free with Model Rail about 25 years ago.

The sharp eyed will notice some of them are quite out of date. Midland Pullmans etc...

Come to think on it, whilst  sticking all those pictures on I wondered why the railway companies went to such a huge expense. Thousands of carriages with tens of thousands of compartments, four pieces of framed artwork each. Most patrons would either stare out of the window, read or chat! A huge expense for something quite frivolent.

As for luggage racks loaded with luggage? Well lets just say I'll be watching your thread closely to see how you do it!

G'Day Folks

Nice work mate, but has anybody ever tried 6 a side rush hour traffic, as there's no way you could get that many 'plastic people in a small compartment. Three D printing, no doubt.

This has crossed my mind. A little work was carried out on the great eastern section Quintuplet set. With fear of repeating myself the sets had to be strengthened with extra sets of trussing because they would bow under the weight of overcrowding which in turn led to complaints from customers who couldn't open the doors to alight at their stop. Although not prototypical for my layout (fan of all things LNER) the overcrowding has to be modeled!

White metal casting would be best as it would add much needed weight to the set! Contacting Langley models might be the best bet.

"You're havin' a laugh int ya mate"!

Normally run with two sets up and down the lower GE mainline, a 436 foot long train might contain 1500 passengers during rush hours. Staggering!

Our local 8-car EMUs are about 163m (say 535ft) long. They carry just under 900 seated and about 2000 in total at peak loading. They are double-deckers though.

Getting back to the layout.

This week has been very wet, dank and quite a bit chilly. When SWMBO demanded I get the wood stove going my mind turned to cozy interiors.

Rather than venture all the way into town to see if they had enough T&G styrene (which would have set me back enough dosh to buy a short rake of coaches) I found an old card folder and made my own.

DSCF1622.JPG.c056aadce7a732386cf41547c60ccebc.JPG

I then spent hours cutting it up and sticking it to the inside of one of Queensbury’s platform buildings.

DSCF1623.JPG.adf4f0d5bb7dc41692161949e14dcff5.JPG

DSCF1621.JPG.2688d5ed6269d705283a74880b6ea600.JPG

Some scraps of foam board have received the same treatment and these will form the partitions.

DSCF1620.JPG.94697428f5f7f0edb7ceabd095465675.JPG

Yesterday I spent the whole evening building card fire places. Three of the buildings had 3 while the other shorter structures had only 2. Three colours have been used, antique white, raw umber and jet black. The two dark colours will all need another coat. Fire places will be finished in gloss varnish.

DSCF1619.JPG.fb146f080fdbf89817add9e971dfd8d1.JPG

Next I will make tables and benches. It’s all taking far too long and what with 5 more buildings to go  things will need speeding up.

After a second coat of paint and glossing of the fire places a quick mock up is in order.

Hi Al.

Great to see Ladmanlow Sidings at the virtual exhibition. Well done mate:good_mini:.

Didn't get to see much of the exhibition. When I went to check in on Sunday afternoon the show had closed due to the time difference! Glad I did get to read through your contribution though.

Thanks mate, much appreciated.

I think they have made a show-guide available, but you might have to pay a couple of dollars.

Cheers,

Al.
